Josh Gabelich:

“The Western Bulldogs still hold a fair bit of confidence that they can bring him across to Whitten Oval. Collingwood’s been in the box seat for him, but I think on the back of yesterday that would only strengthen their case to go and up the offer, up the ante to bring Jack Silvagni across because of the need there.”

The guesswork is hilarious. The Dogs MIGHT be a strong chance because they MIGHT up their offer after yesterday.
They’re forgetting the fact that not only is it Jack’s decision to make, money isn’t even a factor in it and Collingwood are just as desperate as the Dogs to get a player like him.
Plus if it was money, all it would take is for Leppa & co to up their offer by 50k and he’s a Magpie.

The campaigning from the media is next level.

Josh Gabelich is a Collingwood supporter and his grandfather was a premiership player for us. By no means would he be campaigning against us.

If he wants the money, the Dogs will likely offer more.

The amount of pressure and over reliance that will be placed on him in the Dogs' backline will be huge. He'll have support of Moore, Frampton, Howe, Houston, Maynard and Reef if he comes to us. I think the way we manage players will sit comfortably with him.

I think it may be the first time he’s provided some sort of “update” on Silvagni, so no he’s not, but he’s just adding to the layers of guesswork from the rest of the media here. It’s speculation and not an update at all.

How good would he be in tandem with Nick just toying with other midfields. Gotta commend the loyalty though. The reverse Oscar Allen

Thought Bont was silly to recommit before season's end

Ditto Trac not getting out free of charge last year too

Both very silly boys and could have been playing in the black and white alongside Nick, Jordy and Beau in the best midfield rotation the comp has ever seen

Still might happen with Petracca at least

It is not campaigning to suggest that the dogs will seriously up their offer to silvagni given their defensive failures yesterday.

The real question is , is silvagni after financial security or a stable club?
After spending years at a dysfunctional club in carlton, he would be walking into bulldogs team whose coach will be under serious pressure .Which will be until he is sacked or they make a deep September run.

Collingwood have reportedly made it clear that they won’t go beyond a certain number, so he really won’t be able to use any dogs offer as leverage.

Would not cough up more than a second rounder for petracca.

As I have said previously, the demographic of our list and our lack of currency, probably means we need to have a balance of competing while refreshing the list.

In this case, I think the best way to do this would be to get Silvagni for Free, Petracca (but try and take his wage and spread it over an extra year to save a 1st round draft pick) and then someone like a Flanders (or another zippy forward flanker/winger).

If we manage this carefully, together with some retirements and smart recruiting, I think we can carefully bring down the age demographic of the list (see starting 23 outside of forward line), while competing and still bringing through some younger players.

In this example, I have assumed that Bobby Hill remains, although if he does leave, it probably opens the door for a player like Butters or makes a Petracca deal much easier.

After this year, I think one thing is clear for us to remain competitive. We need a consistent, high-level second midfielder to support N.Daicos. If we can't achieve this in the offseason, then I think 2026 will just be a middling year.

Also, I am very bullish on West and think he will take the spot of on of the MMM's by end of 2026. He just has too many weapons to not be a minimum 35-40 goal kicker.

It’s mildly amusing to see Oli Henry running around in the Cats’ VFL side.

Had he stayed, he’d be a Premiership player and would have the spot in our side currently occupied by Membrey.
I don't think we'd have a premiership if he played in the GF.

He wouldn't have stopped Andrews like Big Bad Billy did.

So you're asking Petracca to vary his deal by effectively playing for nothing for a year? Might need a re-think on that.

No, but he’d absolutely be engagement farming, and the dogs being in with a sniff will provide far more clicks over time than confirmation he’s pies bound.

Just looking at the Brisbane lions last night, they had fair few young players who showed that they have what it takes to compete and succeed at the afl level

Their drafting and development system is just on another level. They are setup to be dominant for a very long time.

Which is what we should aim to get back to.
They have an academy
They have an academy;!!!!!!!!

If he wants to leave he is going to have to have to be flexible.

Many players have done similar before.

Otherwise he should just stay at Melbourne.

Good point. When you look at both clubs, one is stable and a proven deep finals contender. The other, well, we already know.

Bevo seems to be under pressure every few weeks. Not ideal place to want to be if you’ve just come from a worse environment. If he went there no doubt he would cop the brunt of criticism from media and fans if him and the club isn’t performing again.

We should offer no more than they offered us for Grundy

They gave us Pick 27

So a pick in the 20s is all they should be getting

Not when they are being asked to play a year for nothing.

You are thinking of deals where a player with say 2 years to run at $500k might have taken 3 years at something like $400-450.

Feel free to bring up one of the many players who have swapped clubs and taken the kind of haircut you are suggesting?

With JSOS being the only known player we’re chasing hard, I do wonder if he knows the type of players we’re chasing to continue topping up? It would easily have been a part of our pitch. We’re clearly still an attractive destination if we’re in the box seat for him.

Silvagni will be at Collingwood next year. Lock it in

Jack Bowes - Spread his 2 year contract over 4 year.

Anyway, we can pay him an extra $150k over the course of the contract to get it across the line.

Either way, negative people like you without their own ideas are always going to find something to pick on.

Bowes - and any other player doing deals like this - would never agree to provide 2 years work for free. It's nonsensical. There would always be an increase to the aggregate pay packet.

I literally just gave you an example.

An unlike Petracca, Jack Bowes, has not already earnt $10m+ in his career.

Anyway, my point is, if Petracca wants to get his wish of playing for a big Melbourne club, he might need to be flexible. As I don’t think Melbourne are likely to come to the party and pay some of his wage, unless we give a future first, which I don’t think we can afford to do.
