Lever has runs on the board, Logue didn’t.

I agree with bleeding games into Dawson and Whitlock but you can’t throw them to the wolves. Which one of those two is going to nullify Jesse Hogan or Jeremy Cameron?

Neither. Nor would Jake Lever.

It wouldn't be an issue getting him if we shoot Logue, Corr, and Daniel off into the sun and Lever played alongside Dawson and Comben and marshalled the defence. But I can't see that happening.

Pink and Comben are going to have to take those responsibilities in the meantime. I know it's not ideal but Lever is not the type of guy to be playing on them either. May would normally look after them or McDonald when May is not available.

The ageing senior pro tactic has run its race at North. We need to double down on youth and take our medicine. Would have been fantastic if we could have offed some of our senior core for additional young players but the brainless folk in our FD signed them for life. Has added years on our sentence.

Have to wait for our young players to undo the wrongs of their predecessors.

The fact that we're even discussing the pros and cons of trading for Jake Lever shows exactly how f*cked our list management is, what a complete and utter shitshow.

I think its about time that the AFL puts in place a clause that states that" Any player (except for those who are a FA) who wishes for a trade to another club can only go to a club that is sitting 14th or below"..This is the only way l see of helping the lower clubs improve.
I think at the least they could at least look into introducing a ratioed tax on recruits (incl. free agents) not necessarily on current ladder position, but a rolling 3-5 year ranking.

Either the higher a team ranks, the wage plus an increasingly higher percentage on top is taken from their salary cap or the lower the team ranks a progressively smaller proportion of the wage is counted on the salary cap.

For example, say Geelong want to pay $1,000,000 a season for their latest Cotton On recruit, maybe they get a 20% tax and it uses up $1,200,000 of their salary cap.

Or if we recruited someone for $1,000,000 a season we get a 15% tax break and only $850,000 counts on our salary cap.

My example probably proves why it would make no difference, Geelong would still operate outside the salary cap and even with more money to spend, we would still struggle to convince worthwhile recruits to come to us! But, done correctly, it would at least give some hope to equalisation.

In 2016 we delisted Boomer, Spud, Drew, Nicky Dal (and Wellsy went to the Pies) because they were deemed surplus to requirements due to their age. Almost 10 years later we've traded in veterans Parker, Darling & Daniel and are rumoured to be looking at Jake Lever. The circle of incompetency is complete, a wasted decade of list mismanagement, what a pathetic football club.

You could write a book on where it all went wrong for us. But the mutiny would have at least a chapter or two dedicated to it.

I only want to bring in Jake Lever if we can bring in Taylor Walker at the same time.

Essendon will have to cut their list given how many debutants they've had to use this year cause of all the injuries.

In theory if Archer May got cut, would we be able to pick him up in the draft or would he be inelgible for it?

I take your point, but to my mind the situations are a little different. Parker, Darling and Daniel were brought in to mentor and teach young talent who will hopefully become 10 year players for the club in the future. In 2016 this young talent didn't exist. LMac is the only one still here 9 years later. Mason Wood and I suspect Corey Wagner are the only ones still playing AFL. (And Goldy)
So when those champion veterans were delisted the problem was that there was nobody there to be mentored by them, and to come through in the future. It's the draftees from 2014-2016 who should be the backbone of our team now, and they aren't.

he signed on an 18month contract he won't be cut

but if he did get cut yes you could get him as a delisted free agent

The fact that not one single person at the club had the foresight to stagger the departures has me dumbfounded to this day.
2015 Trade Wells*
2016 Let Drew and Nicky Dal go
2017 Let Boomer and Spud go

Almost every competent club / list management team plan for the departures of their veterans, it really was the catalyst for the complete and utter mismanagement of our list over the next 10 years.

*Yes it's a bold move, perhaps influenced by hindsight, but he only played 2 games that year, the writing was on the wall.

I’m not sure if you’ve watched our games at all this year but Chom isn’t a defensive defender - he is best when he’s intercepting and playing semi-loose to cut off the supply of the opposing teams f50 entries.

Lever would be an upgrade on McDonald who is probably our second best natural defender behind Archer.

Money taxes wont solve the issue of players still wanting to go to top teams .Clubs will find a work around. The AFL need to make sure if players want to leave their club they go to a lower club and will still get a good contract except it wont be from a higher club but a lower one.

We're just going to have to agree to disagree on this one. Sorry.
