As others have said, he is there for tackles, pressure acts and perceived pressure. Goals are a bonus.
I reckon we over- complicate footy these days.

Goals are the only thing that matter. How you get them is interesting but not particularly relevant.

Fun fact: NMFC had more tackles inside 50 this year than the minor premiers.

Very high chance we are walking into another Fisher situation with Spargo where we get halfway through their deal and come up with wishful rumours that there might be a way to get rid of them early lol
The old saying is doing the same thing over n over and expecting a different outcome.

What drugs are they doing in our list management team

Does Spargo fill a need? No.

Does he make us a better side? Also no.

Rawlings: I’m in.
Probably barracked for North as a kid we gravitate towards those players now . Not that there’s anything wrong with that. But yes strange player to go after . We have gone from no small half forwards who can kick a goal to quite a few.

We've had much better results in the last ten years or so from later draft picks and rookie picks than we have from recruiting fringe players from other clubs.
I'm convinced we'd do better drafting in solid state league players to perform roles around our high-end kids than continually taking in those fringe players.

If we can't attract A & B graders from other Clubs - not sure that continually hitting C & D graders achieves much.

Cheap option with Sargon so why not. He was very good before his injury and is only 25. I remember Goodwin with a massive smile on his face when Spargo just came into the team this year. He valued him highly, so definitely worth a shit. As for Konstanty, for me he’s done. Those shots on goal this year that he sprayed were below par.

"Definitely worth a shit" is one of the greatest Freudian slips I've read on this site.

I reckon this is exactly the wrong way to think about it.

Player on downturn = flotsam. We are not a charity, regardless of what we may've implied with our acquisitions of Tucker, Howe, CCJ, Daniel, even Darling. Darling was reasonable this year because he has the heart of a ****ing lion. Not sure there are many with more ticker in this league. Spargo is tainted goods; let's leave him alone, like the other sixteen clubs seem to be doing.

Konstanty can't be done, because he really did bring a point of difference with his pressure. It was about three or four weeks in a row where oppo half-backs had an absolutely shithouse time of it, and a fair bit of it was down to him. And the forward pressure was good with him in the team.

I'm not going to make the 'he's only 20' argument because I suspect he doesn't have the skill capacity to actually fix his goalkicking woes, but he definitely gets a shot at it next year, and turfing him from the list in favour of a treacle-slow, Achilles-cooked midget is an absolutely insane suggestion

if we’re doing that we should at least be getting wilson, he can play.

nooooo brady, please get us a good defender.

PS - is laverde an upgrade on any of our spud defenders?
No. He's a bigger spud than they project to be.

This whole desire to have 15% of our list as KPD's boggles me some.

Pink
Comben
WDawson
MWhitlock
Augustus

...

Add in the smalls who didn't play:
Archer
Hardemann
Goater

In what positions are you expecting them to play in 2026?

Yeah our number of actual small forwards hasn't increased above 1.

We have some support workers now, but nobody has demanded that 2nd Small Forward spot

Agree with this entirely. Surely the Trembath experience (small sample size admittedly) proves to us that there are players in their early 20s that may be able to play at the highest level.

I am not in industry, but it feels like group think … we can only recruit players that are from private schools, played in the Coates League and were drafted as 17-18 year old.

I am not sure whether the Spargo rumour is true, but he does not fix one of our biggest problems which is lack of speed on transition - either way. I would prefer to find another player similar to RHJ, and see whether they can make it for us.

Yep. Attitude and work rate from the best performing state league players should be trumping the slight increase in talent AFL rejects could provide.

There will always be smart ways to recycle other team’s rejects, but looking at the players (some now AA) that were playing under Brady’s nose who are filling substantial portions of finals teams is alarming.

Had a quick squiz on the Melbourne board to make sure I hadn’t missed any redeeming features.

I hadn’t.

This smacks of not placing enough value on list spots, I honestly don’t get the point.
It's the most undervalued element in discussions on here - list spots.

There are many opportunity costs to just listing spuds for the sake of it.

Example: rookie drafting a washed up Farren Ray for 12 months rather than using the spot on a speculative kid in that year's crop.

Like Dan Houston.

"Performed much better than him". His instruction is clearly as a pressure player, with goals as a bonus if it happens. The Konstanty hate is bizarre...none of Payne / Harvey / Fisher / Duursma or even our staple best 23 forwards in Zurhar or Larkey, put on more pressure than he does.

The kid is still 20. He played his role well. Has plenty of time to add elements and isn't the finished product (like most of our side). If Duursma worked as hard defensively as Konstanty he'd be in the side but he doesn't.
I was meh on getting him, but more than happy to have him now. Fix that goal kicking and goal sense which will come as he's clearly a hard worker then we have a goal a game pressure fwd. He'd be picked most weeks without a second thought. Konst2025stats.png

When other teams draft/pick up short people, they tend to go for the crazy fast, tenacious or crazy skilled types - Watson, Pickett, Daniels, Darcy Jones is tracking that way.

We go for Drury, Hrovat, Turner, Mahony and Spargo types…

Even Bedford is fast & tenacious but a type whose foot skills mean he isn’t locked into the GWS side as competition heats up for spots.
We haven't recruited Spargo yet. I'll wait till we do before losing it but ...

you're wrong to claim Kayne Turner wasn't crazy fast and tenacious. It was the one thing he had going for him. At his best Turner was capable of taking on three opponenets (and Cunners) and winning the contest himself. Footy is a contested game and players like that are valuable.

I would class Harvey , Payne , Konstanty, Banch,Hansen, Fisher, Steven’s as small forwards or flankers there is a few and most are very young and still learning

Poster's complaining about targeting a player like Spargo need to realise that right now that’s where we are as a club attraction wise. No one better would come to us. We stink (for now). Poster’s that are trying to justify trading for Spargo are just flat out club apologists or employees of the club. There is no metric or logic on the planet that could justify giving that bloke a list spot. Absolutely none. Sadly the only chance we have to genuinely improve the list atm is through the draft and for this year at least we need to just imagine we took Whitlock at 3 and got a bonus pick at 20. Things will get better.
