On this, it will be interesting to find out which of the following factors is dominant under the new tv deal:

  1. people previously watching on Kayo switching to 7 now, now that its available
  2. people switching from 7 FTA to Kayo now that it has its own commentary (and it is Hudson / Whately)

53K is pretty modest. I also think that 7 now will be more vulnerable to VPN from overseas to the extent new VOZ system doesn't control for that

I couldn't get my 7+ to work last night when I tried to watch the footy on it. Not sure if it was a common problem.

Interested to see the relative performance of the two networks on Friday nights, and whether network competition helps to grow the pie (i reckon it must).
I note the figures were unavailable when you posted, but will it be possible for you to find out how many watched on Kayo?

Unfortunately I don't think we will get Kayo numbers outside of drip feeds from news ltd.....even less so after the sale goes through to Dazn

By "football" do you mean a-league soccer?

Association football or soccer. It was known as soccer in England till the 70s, the country that invented the sport. Until it became the undisputed number 1 football code, then it was called just football.

The soccer fraternity did a number on the media here by changing to 'football' and stealing the goodwill that footy and rugby in Australia had created for the name across 100 years. You even see some people refer to the local scene as 'Australian football' now. Imagine calling soccer in America 'American football', there'd be a riot. In saying that American soccer fans try the same crap over there too, I've seen it online, but the American's won't fall for it coz they value their own culture more than we do here.

With new graphics and dedicated commentary for the first time, average audiences on Fox Footy for 2025 Opening Round lifted 29% on 2024’s Opening Round.

The Opening Round clash between Sydney Swans and Hawthorn Hawks was up 35% on the Sydney Swans v Melbourne Demons first game of the season in 2024 and is the most streamed AFL season opener of all time. It was also the second most watched AFL season opener of all time.

The Sydney v Hawthorn game also achieved the highest average audience ever for a sporting match on BINGE, bringing new audiences into the sport.

The Sunday afternoon game between GWS Giants and Collingwood Magpies rose 20% on the same match-up which was played on a Saturday night in 2024. Dwayne Russell was joined by Matt Hill as dedicated Fox Footy commentators for the game.

They're some good numbers, you can see why the AFL doesn't wanna get rid of opening round.

There was an article in the Herald Sun today on all the metrics for the northern clubs which were impressive too. A few minor tweaks maybe putting a game in Melbourne on the Monday and it would be silly to change the overall concept.

Why fox migration for the NRL? Didn't it have its own broadcast last year?

Why fox migration for the NRL? Didn't it have its own broadcast last year?

Yeah no changes to the NRL rights this year. I reckon fox would pick up more AFL ratings though this year, off the back of no Saturday and their own commentary teams.

Kayo are really flogging their AFL service at the moment, exactly why they paid a massive amount for the new tv rights, the thinking that the new arrangement would draw significantly more subscribers from 2025 onwards.

Fox migration at 6% of the audience is possible, 13% not so much. However changes to the AFL deal, NRL clubs also have access to the membership offer AFL clubs had in the past that now costs AFL members more.

Some of that flogging might be related to a bigger contra

Also, there might be some streamers that might go in the other direction given 7 now has streaming rights to its games and didn't last year.

But I suspect mostly they believe that the double offer of much better commentary combined with exclusive saturdays is a moment they can capitalise and significantly increase their subscriptions
