List Mgmt. 2025 Young Talent Time

I think Robinson is a little different to Whan’s situation.

Robinson is underage and got thrown in late for the last game after having not played any other state games and continuing to play PSA. I had a look at the other state squads and aside from Vic Metro there were very little underage players. Some state squads had none. Vic metro only had about 4 all from memory which is a little hazy.

The WA team got spanked -especially by the Vic Metro ruck and Robinson would have had no cohesion with the midfield playing his first game. He had a crack but it does take a game or to usually to get going. He didn’t play any practice games either I don’t believe.

Whan was definitely underwhelming aside from game 1. He has no excuses having played all games and didn’t appear to have an injury. He keeps performing very well at WAFL Colts but has pushed himself back into the third round I reckon.

If you remember Brandon Walker went in that mid third round and struggled at the champs. So maybe we get him on the cheap and manage to use a couple of draft picks before him.
The cohesion for Robinson shouldn’t have been an issue as he plays colts with Whan and Rod.

I’d ask the question how is the WA ruck situation before judging the mids. Opposition rucks were forcing it down the opposition throats.

Robinson is still a gun and his late inclusion was not due to talent. The WA development pathways need a full review. The situation/reasons are quite bizarre.

I wouldnt be judging Whans athleticism off one person’s judgement. His work ethic and athleticism is well know by recruiters. The combine will flesh this out.

Walker didn’t play state champs if I recall correctly, no one did.
That was the 2020 covid season where the entire thing was cancelled.
It was a horrible time but it did drop Josh Treacy into our laps so there’s that

We were very lucky getting Treacy with a rookie pick. Great work by our draft team.

From memory it’s a terrible draft but we came away with Chapman, NOD, Walker and Treacy.

In 2016 it was a terrible draft as well but we got Cox, Darcy and Ryan from average picks. Tbh even Logue wasn’t a bad pick compared to some around him.

It’s supposed be a weak draft this year - Let’s load up (not really - I like our list too much to cut the necessary amounts of players).

Hi I know we have a few posters who regularly watch colts and tac cup and the carnivals . I’m curious as to what young players you think we ( nah Wallsy) might be looking at with our first pick ? After last year getting Murphy Reid who might be inline for our first pick this year ? Cheers

Check this thread out. It is worth a read

We hear this weak draft stuff quite often in recent years and it’s hard to place too much emphasis on it to be honest.
There are good players available in every draft.
Even 2020 - which is a bit different as it was Covid affected, is looking like a strong draft for Talls for example, with Thilthorpe, Treacy, Shannon Neale, as well as Jamarra and even Logan McDonald. Plenty of good other players too like Holmes, Mcreery, Gulden, chapman and a bunch of other useful role players.

Yep good and bad drafts are so overhyped.

I'm yet to see a draft without any good players drafted and apart from 2001 (although last year is looking good so far), I'm yet to see a draft where the vast majority of early picks and a lot of later picks are absolutely nailed by most clubs.

Of course all that doesn't mean every draft is exactly the same but you'll always be able to find good players.

compared to 2019 and 2021 it is a genuine wash though

obviously will still be some good players in there but if youre stocking up on a rebuild, it can really set you back (...bombers)

This years draft could surprise as there are a heap of project talls who could be anything. There is a lack of class midfielders, small forwards and half backs which are our key needs though.

Cal Twomey's first draft rankings are out. Only WA kid is Farrow in his 25, no Rodriguez or Whan.

Ben Waterworth has one out as well. Farrow, Swadling & Fred (22) in his top 30.

Is there a world where we draft both Fred & Toby, or are they too similar? I like the idea of drafting two teammates to help their transition to AFL level, kinda like Liverpool getting Wirtz & Frimpong.

Im leaning towards Farrow. Prioritise skills. We have enough ball winners. Farrow and Whan kicking the pill will be great to watch!

Fyfe, Erasmus and Brodie could all be out the door in a single off season. Don’t think what Erasmus decides to do impacts Brodie - it’s only if the club can pay out his contract at this stage. We’ll need to add some ball winning ability.

We’d be about average for skills amongst the top eight sides IMO. I’m not against adding more but I think good players to play wing, small forward and perhaps half back (although I expect Whan to start there) is more important. Wouldn’t mind a better back ruck than Reidy too. Not sure I’m using a top 50 draft pick on that though - make it our last selection or get a look at someone through the SSP.

Think our depth is okay otherwise but depth is always a revolving door. They say your best 30-odd players are the ones that win you a flag. Let’s be honest for most teams around 3-5 players within that change every single year.

Freo will pick a player from Victoria or South Australia with the first pick we have, overlooking the WA player the board has fallen in love with, there will be a period of angst and outright ranting over it - then the player will turn into an absolute gun.

Most have Whan and Rodriguez outside the 30.

If that’s the case we’re laughing.
Might even get two picks in before Whan.

Also gives us a lot of scope with the other NGA’s.

How great is it that GC get two kids in the top 5 again and Brisbane another one? Yay Northern Academies

Feel like this is such a regular theme than WA teams should almost be getting an academy.

The levels of players getting drafted from WA should be genuinely worrying for the AFL.

Not really concerned. He has obvious AFL qualities…Walker went at 50 odd so…
Can't wait for SOS to nominate him with St Kilda's pick 4.
