2026 Attendances

Everybody seemed to forget that Merrett didn’t actually change clubs. You only get real spice when there’s someone playing their former club. What exactly were the various fan bases meant to be cheering or booing last Friday?

Maybe 50 years ago, when it didn't happen as often, and there might have been genuine niggle in the move. Reality is there isn't anymore. Players move clubs quite literally all the time. They're all in it for the money, so there is very little inter-club angst. The players are more like consultants switching companies.

I was at the dogs v gws game. Couldn’t believe how low the attendance was when I was looking around. Cost of living in sure had to be a factor. But a perfect Saturday weather wise. The place should have been a sell out as it was their first Melbourne game of the year. Personally didn’t care as it was easier to get into the bars. Still, shameful from the Dogs supporters.

(Geelong was worse but just making a comment as I was there)
What 3NP said + it being what I consider the worst timeslot. Saturday 1pm. We haven't had one of those in a while. First home game I have missed in forever. Most of my friends and family missed it has they had their kids sporting commitments etc.

We had 40K+ crowds v interstate sides last year so its no issue.

Nobody is changing plans for a game v GWS sorry to say. Less people naturally turn up against interstate sides, unless you are Collingwood.

Just crosschecking last week's crowds and noticed a discrepancy with Geelong vs Fremantle.

Some sources saying 27,815 and others saying 28,715. Anyone know which figure is correct ?

The AFL have it as 28,715, so that's probably the correct one.

Disappointing crowd at kadinnia
Was there a genuine reason why ?
90k+ members in 2025 and cats can’t get 30k at a home game??
A fair chunk of that membership wouldn't live in Geelong. Geelong itself is only less than a few hundred thousand people. Freo aren't going to be a big draw either.

Then why did they make the stadium bigger then
If you can’t get 30k coming off a grandfinal to your first home game with Dangerfield and Cameron in your team irrespective of oppo not a good sign.
how many will rock up when they’re btm 6 for a couple years.

Fair point

So they can play Essendon, Carlton, Richmond and Hawthorn there (and therefore 10 of 11 home games at their home ground).

As a Richmond supporter who is very much in the would rather travel interstate than go to Marvel brigade - opening the roof a big tick.

It turns it from a dark, dull, soulless concrete jungle to a much better stadium.

If only it was day time too! - you can’t tell me that isn’t 1000% more appealing

OK, but why are you bringing this up now? There are no games at marvel this round.

Awesome! - do you think demand warrants opening too of Ponsford?

Last weeks Melbourne v Hawks with 44K looked great with Ponsford Q deck shut.

We looking at 50k?

Maybe special circumstances with Swans (and Lions) as they traditionally all like the Ponsford end?

A real waste to have this on a thursday night

Eh season is a bit of a right off in terms of crowds with the war anyway

You could - the 'around the grounds' link on the AFL membership website said you could, I know, I checked it last week - but I think it was communicated extremely poorly with a million emails and discussions about 'fully ticketed' and 'click this link to upgrade your seat'.

And from memory it was an extremely poor walk-up in any case - only the last few rows at the back of Level 4 for a couple of bays.
genuinely i've had AFL membership for a couple years now and this is the first i'm hearing of the 'around the grounds' thing lol.
