5k tops. Most sparse GWS crowd since COVID.
It wasn't that bad, they opened all the upper decks around the ground so most of the crowd moved up there. If you only saw highlights of the game you probably wouldn't have known that.

Relax people, the GWS crowd was fine considering the stormy weather. Was spread out more across the top levels thanks to the weather. Usually those top levels are closed, so it looked a little more sparse on the lower deck.

Plus a lot of competition in the area that night with the Matilda's Asian Cup final and the Kings NBL Grand Final.

It's a problem that it's such a long gap now until their next game at Engie (not until May), but hopefully they can be getting 10k+ for each game over the rest of the season depending on how things are going.

I was there. 4k

Still early days (and we’ve been burnt by fully ticketed games already) but Hawthorn v Geelong is selling a lot faster than past years.

Tickets are already being sold halfway up the back of the Ponsford Stand which two weeks out from match day is a lot quicker than Carl v Rich and Ess v Haw (and Geel v Haw last year).

Last year drew 88,746, I’m not sure this will draw that but it could draw in the mid 80,000’s.

As it should. Shaping up to be a blockbuster. They rarely ever disappoint too.

Do hawks suffer the same as Collingwood and bigger Melbourne clubs with higher reserved seats holders than Geelong would in this fixture?

After Round 2.

In the past, absolutely. Hawthorn has taken six bays back from reserve seating so the bottom deck is much busier than pre 2025. There were games back in the day where the crowd was 75,000 to 80,000 and the bottom deck was 2/3 full. The new configuration looks much better on TV as Thursday showed.

Which is pretty much identical to Richmond and Carlton.

I don’t think Geelong has any reserve seating on the bottom deck.

The last time probably also involved Hobart. 25th May 2024: NM v PA at Bellerive drew 4706, same day Rich/Ess VFL played at the MCG before Dreamtime.

I suspect the weather would've easily knocked 15% off the potential crowd.

Severe thunderstorms with flash flooding and hail across the metro would've changed people's minds easily.

While I'm not thrilled that the crowd attendance wasn't greater some people expect Giants crowds to go from a previous average and lift markedly by large amounts, not considering that it'll be incremental and compounding increases to attendance over time.

In previous years Saturday's attendance would've likely been a 7k wet weather crowd so while I would've liked more to attend I can also see the attendance isn't as low as previous years when there was wet/inclement weather.

Seems like after every Giants home game, 10k people on social media claim "I was there and no way the crowd was bigger than four thousand!!"

Tassie have sold about 5k tickets already for their first game in Launceston out of a capacity of 8.5k.

Capacity reduction due to construction work at the ground. Notable because Hawks will still play 4 AFL games there this season. Hopefully as work is completely more capacity will open up for some of their games later in the year.
