100% agree, a mature bodied ruck or key defender (23-26 years old) would be my preference if we were to have a pick.

Don't know why we'd go a ruck, do have Ladhams who we haven't used, Green is back before end of the year in the VFL to get games.

Defender maybe but we actually have a few if we think about it.

Last year was all for taking one, this year here or there but if there's someone that we want to get in for 6mths to see go for it.

Do we really need another key defender with Melican likely to be pushed out when Rampe returns and we would still have Hamling and possibly Snell who could also play there. And in the longer term we also have Riak Andrew?
Rampe and Hamling are likely on their way to concluding their careers, and Snell hasn't even debuted yet despite there being a couple of opportunities (in my opinion) to do so - is he even a part of the future? Andrew has shown nothing yet to even prove he's going to even make it.

A MSD one as a defender wouldn't be closer than Snell. If you go to the MSD it has to be someone who can play right now.

For me

Ruck- no
KPD- not sure how he's ahead of the lot you named
KPF- last year I would have done it but not this year
mid- do we look at a clearance mid? Then again not sure we'd bother where we are picking

Then we look at the hf/sf line, do we get another in?

I wouldn't be shocked if we just pass and keep what we have

With Adams also cooked it wouldn't surprise me if we looked to strength the midfield backups because ngl most of the up and comers in the midfield that we have are on the shorter side so we probably need to look to add some height. But on second thought they will probably look at the potential academy draftees for that e.g. Patrick Smith or Meaney (if he can add a few cms)

Yep, however my one caveat is the mid options in this year's draft don't look great. Starting to almost think unless there's someone realistically going to be there not sure the point.

Mellis has been good in our VFL side but I wouldn’t have thought good enough to be in MSD contention. And especially not for us. He’d be a fair way from getting a senior game, behind Cleary and Corey, maybe Dattoli, and with Errol to return.

The only point of us participating in the MSD seems to me to be to get someone capable of playing first ruck, with Green’s injury leaving us pretty thin.

I agree with you Liz.

Having said that - if you watched the VFL last week without knowing who Cleary, Corey, Dattoli and Mellis were …. you’d probably have picked Mellis as the most likely AFL player out of them.

If he can put together a strong body of work over the remainder of the VFL season, maybe next year he could find himself on an AFL list.

Just getting better and better and who is Ladhams

I don't get your hate for Ladhams.
He will be a great replacement if Grundy needs a e\rest or gets injured.
Where's the hate for Ladhams , she was saying we need another ruck and i posted who is ladhams , meaning she forgot him ! keep going

A good interview with an AFL list manger - no team mentioned, but its a talk about the process etc

I didn’t forget Ladhams but he is literally the only depth we have for a role that is pretty important. Even if Green makes it back playing before the end of the season, I didn’t see anything from him before his broken foot to suggest he was physically ready to come in and make an impact at senior level. And now he will have lost much of the fitness gains he made over the off-season.

Yes, Ladhams deserves to get a chance if Grundy gets injured or needs a break. But Ladhams isn’t immune to getting injured himself, and his has a habit of getting himself suspended at inopportune times. If he’s the only ruck back up we have, it’s fairly fragile.

I don’t think I would have. His height is a major obstacle to him having an AFL career, certainly as a midfielder. He’s quick ish but not sure he has the express pace or power that you need at that height.

Ken Hinkley just now on Sportsday talked about the game , how the conditions helped the Filth and good players on both sides were good . Going forward Grundy might have a rest , or of course he rates Ladhams and said both might play which takes away the game time for Grundy
Said he likes that Swans can be off and still found ways to win the same as Freo have

My only point would be would a MSD ruck be ready to play now? I highly doubt it. So we’ve taken a ruck for what point?

I’d much rather take a swing on a half forward or even a genuine mid if we assume Adams is on the LTI

If you pick one who is, then yes, they would be.

For instance, Brynn Teakle is currently in the VFL having already been drafted twice in the MSD and then delisted. He is a mature body and has AFL experience.

I'm not especially advocating drafting Teakle. He has his limitations. But if we were absolutely desperate - say if Ladhams or Grundy went down with a serious injury in the next week or so - he'd probably be a better option than relying on McLean and Amartey to carry the ruck together for whole matches.

Caleb May is another ruck who is still young and probably not quite physically mature but he has a decent run of SANFL experience and has been selected in the SANFL team to play the WAFL. He's not as ready as Teakle, but he is a genuine ruckman at 208cm (and one we might have considered seriously in the year we drafted Green).

Brayden Crossley tears up the VFL.

Most intimidating ruck since Mummy.

Alas, his temperament makes Pistol look placid and rational by comparison.

Not sure taking a bloke being delisted twice is screaming “draft him”.

Caleb May is more a possibility just don’t see us needing a ruck. If we are going out with May as a ruck highly doubt we are winning against contenders.

I’d rather try and find an electric HFF or a genuine mid

What I'm talking about is patching up any holes - however imperfectly - in our list for the next six months, where we clearly want to contend for a premiership. Not drafting for the future.

There have been some excellent players acquired via the MSD but can you identify even one who was taken at the very end of the first round (assuming we even have that pick at the very end of the first round)?

See that’s where we disagree. I’d rather try and find the next Newcombe than find the next bloke we will delist in 6 months.

I get your view just personally don’t see the point

Imo both Serong and Rosa's have shown their importance to the side & it doesn't look like we've got someone with similar physical & skill attributes. Any smokeys similar to them we could pick up in msd?

The complete absence of comments by the other so called pundits about the conditions and the impact it would have had on the Swans game showed how biased they are. Hinkley calls a spade a spade. I like that
