List Mgmt. 2026 Draft and Trade Thread

I brought it up, but I'm just an uninformed nobody that hadn't heard he intended to pick north or I wouldn't have bothered mentioning him.
I went through the North board and they are non the wiser as well, only that North are putting in work and hoping to flip him to choosing North

You could just use M from the Academy and that would take care of Meaney, McGroder, Medved and McCartney
And Monrahan.

It’s very difficult to assess McCartney’s desirability given he’s not played all season and our academy lads have put in a dominant season against every team they played.

We don’t have much draft capital, are unlikely to have many list spots, and matching early bids will be close to impossible this year, especially since a there is also a promising academy crop next year so we probably won’t want to dip into future picks too far (or at all).

We’ll have more of an idea in a couple of months how those ‘M’ boys (and a Jenkin) stack up within the draft pool.

Why anyone would choose that rabble over us is mind boggling, but to each their own I guess.

The only weigh up for Aidan is he sees a lot of players ahead of him at the Swans and a much faster debut with North. There’s no question about which club he’d rather play for.

Is the decision before or after Free Agency, because he could easily go up 1 or 2 in the pecking order if the decision is made after free agency

I think we will be fine if you were to have the draft today.

However, I do expect one of the 5-6 to have a bumper carnival/combine testing that will cause them to go highly. Its just whether we will value their attributes

I guess my main point was that we won’t have the list spots to accommodate all those in our academy team who might be draftable. Maybe I’m over-optimistic about their draftability but there are some strong athletic profiles amongst the group. Kyle’s rise last year showed how that is valued.

Is Blackwell-Smith in this year’s crop or is he another for next year?

He's this year as well.

And there's also Will Jenkin

Not you , some just don't take note that no one really knows at this stage

Best depth in the academy for years. I think there's every chance we're going to see 2 or 3 at other clubs next year.
Minimal list spots and weak draft hand means we will need to prioritise

This is harsh but I think we will clear rookie spots for them, leaving current rookies to the VFL team. Particularly Sydney based ones.

I don’t understand this comment. Aren’t all our rookies Sydney based, given they’re on our list that is locate in Sydney?

There aren’t many rookie spots available either - and to clear those we do have we’d need to jettison our veterans in Rampe, Lloyd and Hamling. Maybe that’s exactly what we do but it would leave us a bit vulnerable given that very few of our younger players will benefit from much development this season through injury.

I’ve lost track a bit of who’s on which list. Other than these three veterans and the two Cat Bs, Edwards is still a rookie and will probably need to be promoted. I think Hanily is still a rookie? Anyone else? I think it’s just the five Cat As, with 37 on the senior list.

Hetherton I believe was country NSW so given (I could be wrong on the name but I believe GWS pre-selected Riley Hamilton in the rookie draft) it gave us free rein to rookie list both Hetherton and Chamberlain as they were NSW Zone/Academy boys

From my opinion follow could go in ND/Rookie

2026:
Jenkin x 2- wing
Medved - hbf/third tall
Morahan - KPD
McGroder - KPD/Utility
Price - in Mid
Smith - in/out mid
Clifton -ruck (goes off the SA to get picked in msd in 4 years time...)
Pignatelli - third tall
McCartney - KPF NM f/s as discussed
Blackwell-Smith - mid
Meaney - in/out mid

2027
Hardy - KPF/ruck (my preference over McCartney)
Epis - med utility
McLennan - in/out mid
Cairns - Mid
Delaney-Fielding - third tall
Marshall-Orr - HFF/third tall
Mok - med utility
Badger - ruck - moving to WA so likely not eligible

2028 (need to see more of u16s this year)
Keam
Micheletti
Sheridan
Yerbury
No doubt some will bolt and other will not continue to develop but looks a very good crop

Chamberlain we had first dibs on (as did GWS over Hamilton). Hetherton wasn't in either academy, which is why neither club had first dibs on him but were free to try to persuade him to join as a zone selection.

But that's got nothing to do with my confusion about Free Agent's post.

Imo from 2026 we will get

Medved
Jenkin
Price (rookie)
Blackwell-Smith (rookie)

I think McCartney will chose NM, McGroder will chose athletics and some of the other guys will maybe go in the rookie draft to other clubs. I do think our midfield needs a bit of a refresh at VFL level especially as Cleary and Sheldrick push into full time senior minutes.

Also I believe Badger is the 2027 class but information on him is so little that I could be wrong

Honestly if we have to keep letting players go to other clubs, while keeping the cream of the crop 2 or 3 selections, I only see positives out of that. Other clubs will stop whinging about our academy because they are benefiting from it and we're creating a pool of players we can temp home in a few years time as other clubs have done to us for so many years.

Off the top of my head....

But yes to both. Will edit

Think he was playing for EF as an underager... may be 27

We will be hard pressed to create spots on the rookie list for next season as we went over on the senior list for this season and only 5 Cat A rookies spots are available along with the 2 Cat B spots.

Cutting the senior list to open up the required 3 spots for the draft will be hard enough with 4 senior players left to sign on in Amartey, Adams, Cunningham and Jordon.

Jordon is believed to have a contract for next year anyway and if we keep Amartey that means. Only Adams is a delist option with Cunningham a delist and rookie option. We will likely need to trade a contracted player if Amartey stays (McLean or Ladhams for example)

From the rookies Edwards and Hanily are already signed for next year and both Cat B’s are believed to have re-signed as well.

Hamling, Lloyd and Rampe are left and there is nothing to suggest all three will be released. Rampe may retire but the other two may stay on and be joined by Cunningham. We may not have a rookie draft selection just the three National draft picks.
