I love how even non-Brisbane fans have realised this. Also known as the "oh sh!t that's right, Gold Coast were top 6 this year 😬" clause.

Will be fascinating to see how many teams actually get assigned 4 double-up opponents from their own grouping of 6. "1" would be the early favourite I'd have thought.

At least the AFL are being obvious and transparent about it now I guess 🤷
You really think the 4 double-ups in your own group is about sabotaging the Lions and not about attempting to help Essendon and Carlton get into Finals?

I haven't read up on the groups. what are the changes? Crows finished 5th, yeah? so who would be in our group? Bris, Gee, Hawks, GC?

Top six (in terms of the fixture) is the teams that finished 1-4 at end of h/a season, plus the winners of the elimination finals (even if they finished 7th and 8th at end of h/a season).

It's almost comical going over Geelong's final round fixtures the last decade. It's all bottom four sides, home games and easy pickings. The AFL fixture guy is a huge Cats fan btw.
Did a deep dive into this on ChatGPT. There would be no other club in the league this looked after. They played Melbourne in 2021 but the AFL made sure that situation never happened again.

2007* was the last time they finished the H&A season outside of Victoria. *full seasons without Covid. For what it’s worth in the original 2020 fixture they were scheduled to play Adelaide in Geelong in the Round 23, the eventual wooden spoon team.

FWIW Collingwood has finished the H&A season outside Victoria twice since then. 2008 and 2018 both against Fremantle.

Why was it decided Hawthorn/Essendon is a round 1 staple?

Round 1 Hawks v Bombers has been on / off for the best part of a decade. 2017, 2021, 2023, 2024, 2025 and now 2026. The MCG average to these fixtures is over 75,000 plus.

Cashing in on the 50 year old rivalry is just good business. What’s more interesting is the disproportionate number of Friday Night games since 2009 — 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2019, 2021, 2025 and now 2026.

They'll get that crowd no matter when they play.

Doggies have played Port, Geelong, Brissy and now Hawthorn. Any chance of a gimmie against North/Eagles/Tigers?
You have got us off a 5 day break from Easter Monday while you get to cruise against Essendon. It should almost be a gimme for the Dogs

Sounds like you're proposing that Collingwood should play at Kardinia Park? Hard for Geelong to play the top Vic sides in Geelong when the AFL won't let us.

For what it's worth, our record in the first week of finals from 2012-2021 was one win and eight losses (the one win came from a miss after the siren) so if an easy kill in the last round is meant to be the fixture guy cheating for us he's done an incredibly bad job.

They are ruining it cos they dont want to take blockbusters away from the MCG. They wont put Essendon v Carlton at the Adelaide oval when they can get 30K more at the MCG. Essendon V Melb is asnoozefest!
You know what's worse? We haven't played Melbourne twice in a year since 05. This is the third time we've played them in GR so people who can't afford to go to GR haven't been able to see two Melbourne based clubs in their state 2 out of 3 years.

Not really. If one team starts to drop later in the season it would be more low to mid 60's
The average for the three games since they made this matchup a thing (23, 24, 25) is 74,410. The average for the 10 previous matchups (excluding 2016, 2020 and 2021), is 53,899.

Only one of the previous 10 matches has drawn a crowd bigger than the 68k in 2023, and the 73k in 2024. In 2017 they got 78k, that was the first game back for all the banned Essendon players, and Roughy’s first game back as well. Essendon also played home games against the Hawks at Docklands more often than at the MCG, as recently as 2022. They wouldn’t think of doing that now.

Essendon hasn’t played Melbourne in a home game (outside of Covid times) since 2018.

Hawks own the Dogs, hopefully a better fight put up after the last few spankings.

And the ridiculous nature of the fixture is that you had 8 home games in a row against us from 2011-2018 and now we can’t even get a game in Melbourne between the two.

Maybe this is the year we double up but that thought seems to cause an error 404 for the fixture computer.

If they were trying to help Carlton they wouldn’t schedule an extra away game for them would they?

Twice in 4 years the blues have to play an extra away game
