The problem isn't the rule. As you say, it's the over-officious umpiring of it and also the penalty is disproportionate to the offence.

I think the problem IS the rule.

Umps aren’t perfect. Never have been, never will be. They have a tough job and trying to officiate such a pedantic rule is asking for trouble.

There was absolutely nothing wrong with the old rule. It didn’t create problems or frustration. It was clear, simple and worked.

Why do they care who stands the mark anyway
The point is someone needs to stand the mark, otherwise they will just zone off 10 metres and clog space like Richmond made an art form out of.

Obviously the AFL have made something that should completely straight forward, into a complicated mess ... with 50m penalties thrown in.

It wasn't working though.

Teams, like Richmond, would zone off the mark and make it harder for teams to play on or go short, or do anything other than bomb it long.

Yes, it allowed defenders to defend.

Now you effectively have 18 vs 17 (as the bloke on the mark is effectively out of the play), with the potential for an absurd 50m penalty.

It’s just the AFL trying to artificially increase scoring. Does my head in.

Personally I dgaf if a team concedes the mark and runs off. It opens up the play, and for instance against us gets some run and dash going .

But if you just have the law and you think it clauses a clog in space then just let anyone stand the mark imo

No, you have 18 vs 18.

Allowing the oppostion to zone off into space would be 17 vs 18. Which is what Richmond was doing.

They do this with every rule though and what were the problems they were fixing ? They just create annoying interpretations all to speed the game up , which then leads to people saying it's too fast which leads to injuries.

I watched a bit of footy this weekend. but even reading the scores, they arte telling a story of the Great divide. The Biggest winners of the weekend are Port. They impressed me how they denied Cats their game and forced them to play a chaos game. The Cats hate that and they always like to control the play and play kick to kick, slow the game down so much everyone yawns and use foot skills to take record amount of marks. Port denied them the easy kick by shutting down space and putting huge pressure on the kicker. This did two things, it forced errors and it caused turnovers on the spoil as the Port players hunted in packs. They did not allow the Cats players to get the handball to space to set up the easy kick to an open target and when the Cats were trying to get space they were closing in defensively. Well done Port.

But to me the results are very eye opening. I think there are huge questions on the Crows. They are not showing anything and are in big trouble in defence. I know they have injuries in that space but their team defence is very shallow. Not sure their mids are as good as they think they are either. I see an Adelaide slip.

The dogs are in trouble because they are injured. If they have to maintain a backline of Gardner, Busslinger and Kharmis they are in deep poo. They have a few problems. They will get Croft back but lose Darcyy. Naughton is out for a week at least and Libba a few weeks I should think. But who, other than Naughton kicks their goals? Bont as the CHF?

Are the Suns pretenders and Flat Track Bullies? They win at home but have been very poor this year. They beat the Cats, Eagles and Bombers at home and Tigers away. Three of those teams are in the bottom 6. The Cats were not playing well and this season are very erratic and could be very fortunate the AFL introduced the very stupid Wildcard Round. When the suns have played good opposition they have been taken to the cleaners.

The Dees are playing like a Top Four side and that is how we should be thinking of them next week. They are FAST< FAST< FAST and if one Pickett don't pick yer nose two will. I watched the first game Latrelle played for Glenelg, he kicked 5 goals. Sensational talent. The Dees have role players and true talent, a good mix of both. They are hard at the ball and their outside game is top class. I think the Dees will play finals.

Richmond, Essendon, Carlton and the Eagles will be battling for bottom spot. The tigers look favourite at this stage.

Hawks are running a little under the radar but they are very solid. Not too many deficiencies but the midfield can be gotten. Thier forwards, even without Chol who was very good in the matches he did play. Dear, Lewis and Gunston are very good and the small forwards are always dangerous. I think they can be opened up in defence though if you deliberately play wide and open space for the forwards. They play a zone defence and protect the intercept player. If you make them play man on man they are not so good.

The pies kicked their highest score this weekend. But who against? Bombers defence is shite and it showed this week. They also have the problem that their mids and forwards don't defend which leaves huge gaps when they turn the ball over. If you put them under lots of pressure you get the intercept and it is almost always a guaranteed score. The Pies haven't been able to score, even though they won some, against rerasonable sides this year and I think good sides will not let Daicos or PendleGranny get free like Bombers did.

Freo. Umm. They look like a solid team. But I wonder about the ability of even just ordinary sides to kick a score or to keep them to low scores . They have the most talked about Forward line in the comp but I am not convinced. If you have the tall players to match them you can overpower them. Lions proved that. They have huge talent on every line but I still wonder about the way they play sometimes. If things are tight they shut down and play safe. That is dangerous and can lose games.

Cats. As I said in the Suns Rant. The Cats are not impressing anyone this year. They are good at home but not so good away. Losing to Port is a huge loss for them. They were expected to win by at least 5 goals. But were totally shut down by Port. The Cats have not won a game away from home so far this season. but luckily for them the Cats get one of the easiest draws in the aFL. Seems this happens every year. I wonder if this is to compensate for them having to play Finals at either Docklands or The G? Oh and the umpiring too Frees For +44, Frees Against -23. They should make the Eight but I am not sure they have the team to go far.

St Hilda kicked 140 points against Eagles. Ho Hum. They don't look fantastic and have not really improved from last year. Let's see how they go against some good sides.

North. They are improving. Other than Dees the Kangas are a good bet in quite a few games. They are going to give some of the top sides a fright. But to be a good side you really have to beat a wounded Giants. Improved yea, but there are matches they must win and their coach needs to drum this into them if they are to break through.

That only leaves the Lions. They are showing us why they are the team to beat. But who did they beat? Saints, Pies, North and a wounded Adelaide (they basically have no tall defenders). Not exactly top sides. Let's see how their season progresses against the top sides. Still the ones to beat when they play their good footy. But they have to play that against the best.

Port were beautifully coached last week too. I think by surprise theyre in a much better place than Adelaide.

The only one I'd keep would be Montagna, Kingy's been grating me for a little while now. Not just because of Thursday night.

Find a presenter who doesn't have an Eddie McGuire esque tendency for driving the narrative like Clark does and a pundit who's good with tactics, stats but without the cheese King brings to it.

Exactly he absolutely wants to drive the narrative. Its awkward. I like Ben Dixon in the role

Yep. It's awkward for the other panellists and infuriating for viewers.

Dixon isn't great but at least he knows a little about footy.
I swear Kingy and Joey were rolling their eyes perplexed as to when he was going to stop his mindless aimless wander of thoughts. I really like Ben Dixon
Clark and that other show the one during the week with the journos make my head spin a full 360. I dont mind when Corbin is on the show but other than that its all driving the narrarive like you say

Good point in this article.
"When clubs respond by appealing consequences rather than reinforcing accountability, it undermines years of work to make sport and footy more inclusive"

Yep, it's why I barely consume any MSM footy shows anymore. Shows used to have unique aspects to them like First Crack or OTC would be about tactics and form etc, now with Clark there he shoehorns in all the clickbait crap that should be left for 360.

OTC was a pure footy show , not anymore JR and Lewis are hopeless , Bucks is good and Tom Hawkins is going okay filling in for Browny. Just can't watch it anymore , just record 360 and watch what i want

I watch the 10 minute YouTube video of Horse and Simmo and that's it these days.

I'm not sure if it's on every week, but the short segment on (some?) Tuesdays with Razor Ray is worth catching. He has quite a knack for explaining the thought processes that umpires are instructed to use to apply certain rules and he's not afraid to acknowledge where umpires have got something wrong, or admit that some decisions fall into gray areas.
