Draft night saw us select Harry Kyle, Max King, Jevan Philippou and Billy Coottee.

I understand JK Rowling is writing a new book: Dean Cox and The Curse of the 2025 National Draft.

However Bowman limped off and was escorted back to headquarters about ten minutes into the session. He looked quite distraught. I’m guessing maybe a hamstring? Or some other lower body muscle issue.
Buried at the bottom of a HS article today is confirmation of Bowman's injury (first broken by liz):

Ned Bowman suffered a hamstring strain during Friday’s match simulation and is awaiting scan results.

Sydney Swans player Ned Bowman suffered a hamstring injury in Friday’s intra-club match at Tramway Oval.

He will miss approximately eight weeks of football.
Thanks. Do you a have link to the source?

Here are the injuries that we've had no recent updates on, or have not been reported by the club at all:

Adams (Achilles)
Andrew (quad)
Cootee (hip)
Edwards (hamstring)
Hanily (foot?)
Papley (calf)
Dattoli (managed?) didn't participate in match sim last Friday

Holy shiiiettt eight weeks

Not a big deal in the grand scheme of injuries, but brutal for a kid who had just gotten himself into senior contention.
Swear some of these defender that are close to a debut can't catch a break with injuries. I'm looking at you Patty Snell (and to a point think Edwards had one as well)

When it says he will ‘miss 8 weeks of football’ do you think that means 8 weeks from now or the first 8 rounds?

If 8 weeks from now, that means he’ll miss five of our games and be back for Round 6 on Friday 17 April against GWS. Obviously he won’t come straight back in so assume he misses that game plus two more
after that then the earliest we’ll see Ned in the firsts is Round 9 against North meaning he’ll miss our first eight games.

That’s quite a hamstring injury. I’m not entirely surprised because he looked quite distraught while being escorted down towards HQ. Either that or he had grit in his eyes. I’m actually quite relieved it isn’t worse - torn off the bone, or that ilk. Though I didn’t actually see the incident where he sustained the injury.

Our injury updates always seem to underestimate timelines, so I would guess 10-12 weeks in reality.

Just trying to figure out if there’s ANY first or second season players left who might push for selection early in the year.

Nope - they’re all injured. And most of them are significant injuries.

This bites.
Harry Kyle

Bice is fine

Dattoli if he's ok, all we know is he's been deloading

Or are we seeing the result of young players trying super hard in an environment that gives them a chance? As always, interested in Bonz opinion.
They don't get on to a list by being patient. What usually sets them apart is their talent plus drive and when they get on the list and see where the bar is now set, they work even harder to achieve.

This would be to the detriment of a growing body and they are probably told time and again not to push too hard, but that's not easy for a kid who wants to belong.

Depends on how the hamstring was damaged, sometimes a muscle can be damaged literally just by shifting surface or having your leg planted when tackled.

The stress reactions our players have had are actually quite common with younger players who are growing and particularly hard to catch (Dattoli and King may have arrived with theirs).

Cootee has injured his hip, and we don't know much about it (also a mature recruit).

Phillipou missed a chunk of last season so was always going to be a little more prone to injury (plus quads are generally more rare to do so wouldn't read into it).

Dattoli being load managed isn't uncommon for a young player, especially after being injury interrupted last year. I think that's fine.

We also changed our fitness staff last season and had a short Pre-season with a different coach, so was always bound to have a few extra injuries.

Also yes, youngsters are always highly likely to do extra training on the side... It's very frustrating.

I'm honestly think it's too early to say we have "incompetent" S&C staff, they would be far more qualified than most observers on Bigfooty and it wouldn't surprise me if a few of them read these forums.

I get that people have their opinions and such, but we have to realise that others have feeling and such and no one goes around insulting you about the quality work you do. (I received a fair bit of slander with my fencing online and not afraid to say it affected me).

About how I thought things might be. My son did his Achilles stepping into his swimming pool and is still in a moonboot 4 months later.

These things happen.

I did a grade 2 tear to my calf and redid my LCL 3 weeks ago playing Pickleball.

I was lining up a backhand, planted my leg and my team mate crashed into me and I twisted my knee/ leg.

I warm up, stretch each night, work out regularly.

My question on the s&c staff is more so why don't they intentionally give the younger players much less to do? Like literally pull them off the track, kick them out of the gym after a certain point or significantly limit their weights etc.

Realistically, an 18 yr old has to be lucky to earn a debut anyway, and even if they did, they're not going to move the needle much. So why push them to the absolute edge? They all get pushed till they break and now it will be a detriment to their development as they undo all their hard work sitting around in moon boots and back braces.

Imo if their loads are significantly less, that would compensate for them trying to do extra outside of training. From the videos we've seen of them on the track and weight room, they're going full power.
