I wonder how journos are always on the spot. Do they hang around Sportsmed clinics or do the clubs let them know when to be there?
Considering some of the off handed comments from previous guys like Andrew hayes

Absolutely, any sniff of a injury they go and hang out there the next day

Mike Smithson is probably in a nearby bin

Do you reckon they need to book it or is the bin hiding spot first come first serve

The sports journos in Adelaide seem so polite, I suspect a booking system. Smithson would have his own bin.

If scan shows all clear, probably best to back off on training load, and build back again, foot stress fractures are extremely difficult to manage and can take forever to get on top off. Will Day is another who is battling with this issue. Probably wont be ready for early games now.

No risk, just build him back slowly, maybe best to miss first few games and get running miles into his foot.
I’m not liking it one bit, starting to sound like something that’s not going away easy.
We need him to have a big season, he plays well the team looks a lot better.

Its a broken foot that he continued to run on for half a game.

It was always going to be a really difficult and interrupted return

We need to play the long game with him

He’s had this issue for a while even before he missed the back bit of last season.
I don’t think he was 100% anytime last year.

Scans confirmed no break. Just need to manage him for the early rounds until his confidence to fully exert it.
Every time he goes to accelerate it keeps triggering soreness which sounds a lot like experiencing neuropathic pain.

Thats not a great sign.

Depending on the severity of the pain, maybe he can play through it without re- injuring it.

Put JHF on ice and build him up slowly and make him play a game or two of SANFL footy before he plays AFL. Port should be thinking about the bigger picture and his longevity.

I had a stupid accident with a Tarzan rope into the river 4 years ago. Long story short I shattered my mid foot into multiple pieces.

It didn’t need surgery but I was on crutches and then moon boot for several weeks.

I was back jogging after a few months but I couldn’t have imagined trying to play footy with it for at least 12 months, took that amount of time to get back to doing speed work. It was just slow plodding jogs for a while there.

I swear 4 years on it’s still improving.

It still aches from time to time but that is not happening as much. But I’m not playing footy, which is a completely different challenge to just running in cushioned sneakers

I reckon JHF might just need more time to be pain free but the risk of breaking again would be low by now I would think.

My first concern would be are the scans 100% trustworthy.

I’d hate to come along in a month and have them say oops we didn’t see that …who knew to look there?

There should be no pain.
I’m not sure about that, I think pain and discomfort will linger long after the bone has healed. Especially with high impact activities such as footy. I think he is going to have to just learn to put up with a bit of discomfort.

It would be neuropathic, which is why it doesnt show on scans. Can take a long long time to fully come good and there is very little you can do to treat it.

He’s a scab. He’d be sitting in the Carls Jr across the road drinking refillable soft drinks all day.
