From what I know, he's torched the connections he's made for a post-footy career in Brisbane with the cheating stuff. If the Weagles offered him 3-4 years as a player/coach, he'd be silly not to take it.
Well people just need to get over it.

Don't mind the idea but we still have Luke Lloyd, Curtin pending a debut and ZZ just floating around with few games. Joyce is also available as our break the glass depth, at least for defense. Not sure if a state league player is going to make a big difference if we bring one onboard mid-season. May spend the rest of the season learning game plan etc.

Liam Jones might suit your case, he might be more ready to go for AFL if fit and available.
Liam Jones has already played 2 games of VFL, one more game and he would be eligible for MSD - unlike Daniel Lloyd who was disqualified from nominating for MSD 2 years ago.

Given we're down Payne likely for the year plus injury to KPPs at both ends of the ground, Liam Jones is as good as you'll find as tall depth in the MSD. From memory at end of last year he was still wanting to continue but wasn't offered a contract, so should still be physically able play.

Break gloss option, if it gets near the mid season draft and 1-2 of our players have been placed on the Long Term Injury list Liam could be it. 35 years old but would only be required to lift for 1/2 a season and maybe snag himself a flag in the process.

Would be better than almost anyone else you would get from the state leagues.

If we've only offered Marshall a 1 year deal, we must have really gone off him for some reason.

Bizarre to me that we would offer a 20 year old high-ish draft pick who's a premiership player just a one year extension. Something very odd going on there.
GAWN… wink wink

The AFL are a joke. This dumb draft equalisation bs has been so overcooked.

I’m on record stating I think the FS and Academies were probably too far on the generous side and I also said we should just remove all discounts as I believe the right of first refusal was benefit enough. But this new system is pathetic. It’s overcooking the egg when all we had to flipping do was remove discounts and keep the picks for list spots policy in.

Is it that flipping hard?????

His 10/11 disposal effort in the GF didn't come across as great.

List management team must've done a Witherden and aren't 100% keen on keeping him now. Maybe something in his game isn't rated.
Nah he’s rated. He’s a first round pick which we matched. I think his biggest issue is that (only from what I’ve been told from third hand info) is that he’s actually quite shy and introverted (which isn’t a bad thing) and maybe hasn’t gelled with the team but question marks on fit in an AFL professional environment is the vibe I got. From what I’ve heard he goes to training and goes back home. Not much todo with outside the club in terms of socialising and hangout etc. again not bad but probably a bit of Schache feelings?? Dunno.

9 years for Bailey would be crazy.

I can see the cap plateauing after the current increase given fox footy has changed hands and free to air tv is not exactly flying.

Having him on $1.1m in years he turns 34/35/36 is just too big a risk. He is a player who relies on his pace so if he starts to lose it at 31 that's a big liability.

I think we learnt during the down years how bad the club becomes if we drop off - people stop coming and so do players. We are not a natural destination club, we are just that way right now.

I’d say the ‘closing the gap’ figure we can offer will become more apparent once we know what is happening with Neale. If he leaves, that’s a long way towards retaining Bailey. The opposite would be true too, that if he stays the cap wouldn’t offer much room to go much (if any) closer.

Would be interesting to compare the media narratives for McStay, Ah Chee, Starcevich and Bailey. My recollection is that McStay, Ah Chee and Starcevich were always leaving and the PR was the AFL standard "happy to focus on the now and let the contract stuff run its course" whereas the Bailey line seems a bit more nuanced with "wants to stay, but..." History, certainly suggests that if a contract is not sorted by the mid-year bye then the player is gone.

Someone's put it out there that he's thinking of staying for whatever reason. To attract bigger offers??

I really doubt that he's made any decision yet but it seems we're fairly steadfast on what we will offer and it's just a matter of when they get around to doing the sums on whatever else is on the table. Which imo will be hard to knock back.

The chatter is reminding me of when Clug was out of contract in that there were massive offers but you’d hear clearly that he wanted to stay. That’s probably my heart speaking as I desperately want to keep Zac.

My head says that there was nowhere near the gap in valuation for Clug in 2024 as we were happy to make him our highest paid player, which is clearly not the case now.

That's the issue. I'm sure he would probably love to stay but he's a young man presented with a golden opportunity and I know what the advice he'll be getting will be.

The other significant issue is that the money being thrown around now mightn't be there forever as good players who come out of their contracts see what St. Kilda have done and want to be a part of it. There's going to be a lot of them over the next couple of years at the same time the money coming into the game might be in jeopardy.

1.2 or 1.6 million is a difference
Although you think end of the contract he setup for life either way
If not already

So in 20 years time he can look back and remember all those premiership cups and the teammates

Or go to another team and watch the old team mates win.
Honestly i know end of day it prob 2 mill before tax. As they say money does not buy everything

It means he would be contracted until 34/35 years old, but i think he has the attributes of a player who could play longer
Mmm, I kind of think the opposite here. Zac seems to me to rely first on his speed and agility, and second on his game sense and ability to read the play.

It would surprise me if he developed into a Pendlebury/Hird type who is able to play like time doesn't exist and could seemingly play forever.

Adelaide could quite possibly win more premierships for the rest of Bailey's career than us

Can definitely see Hugh McCluggage as a Black/Pendlebury time slows down type.... Zac nahh, he gets caught unaware, while not regularly it is not rare, sometimes seems like he has no peripheral vision.

Marshall is a gun, and I think the club will regret not going after retaining him harder.
I do like him too. Great runner but strong through the hips and always gets his arms free. There’s a lot to work with there.
Unfortunately, we won’t keep everyone as we all know and he looks like one that others have identified as gettable given our list squeeze.

Do we have a MSD pick? All drafts are above my pay grade.

I wonder if Andrew Crowell’s departure and the work he did with the young boys and integrating them collectively with one another is having a negative effect on guys like Sam that may be introverted or not say play golf like a lot of the boys?

From the socials from years ago Crowell was pivotal and instrumental with uniting all players and I’m not sure who is filling the role nowadays but Crowells departure probably can’t be understated.

Fair play they showed a graphic that included Naicos and Darcy with the Ashcrofts with the picks used to acquire these players but again I find it incredulous to the point that Morris, Cleary and lesser extent Riewoldt are derelict in their reporting that they AGAIN refuse to address that these picks used to acquire these players was done by trading and splitting first and second round picks for more points.

They continuously make out that clubs like Brisbane never had early picks to get the Ashcrofts; we did, we just split them for more points to the benefit of a clubs that traded picks with us.

This narrow sensationalist reporting needs to be called out because it is false reporting and a deliberate attempt to fabricate narratives that doesn’t exist.

Lastly, the discussion about Swann is real and it’s getting close to his appointment becoming untenable.

I got in an argument yesterday over not including Carlton with Dean in these discussions. They didnt like when I pointed out the selected Dean with a bunch of second picks just like GC and us. Apparently its "different" as they had to trade out two 1st round picks to do it
