Anyone more in the know provide an overview of Ben Camporeale (and Lucas)?

We saw 0 of Ben last year, and with our list changes he seems to be out of contention for an emergency spot. Is he someone we still think can develop into a 1s player?

Ben is really an inside mid only which makes it tough as it's one of the hardest positions to break into.

Ben started with injury and had his season ended with a lengthy VFL suspension after playing consistently good football & was probably getting very close to debuting.
Both were emergencies last night.
Disposal the issue with both with the need to be able execute skills (still not alone in our squad).
Ben competing with the A-Team of inside midfielders
Lucas for the wing positions (surprised he didn’t play BL last week so is maybe further back than expected for selection at the start of the season)

Be very happy if we could land one

I have no doubt we are going to be very active and would have a lot of names targeted. These are just two I was told we are keen to have and are putting our best foot forward
Thanks for the info Soapy! Have you heard if we are targeting any talls like a King or Walter?

Anyone know how Liam Reidy's tracking? Haven't really been following...but caught some of his highlights when it was announced he was coming over and for a big guy he looks like he has good skills. Can he jump? :)

They reflect players drafted in the 3rd and 4th round

Everything Wright has done historically has been about creating a deep balanced playing list so I don’t think we will be wasting too much time chasing big game free agents.

The free agent list this year is pretty thin outside of the big names. I wouldn’t mind targeting Briggs from GWS but aside from that I won’t be shocked if we don’t do much more than havibg another crack at Khamis.

Moving forward, I think we are going to need another ruck on the list. The rule changes are likely to lead to more injuries and we shouldn't be putting our best forward in the ruck at centre bounces.

I think we have made the smart choice in going for cheap, big bodied, crash and bash rucks TBH.

The extra jumping is going to lead to injuries and it seems a position you really don't want to invest too much salary into.

St Kilda's $1.7m per year for TDK is going to look amazing for 3 possessions in round 1, until Max Gawn realises TDK can't use his athleticism to sidestep him any more, and just crashes into him front on (like Pittonet did to Neale) 51 more times for the game. In round 2 he has to do it again against Kieran Briggs. Round 3 is Sam Draper and Oscar McInerney tag teaming him. At some point he's going down with an injury, guaranteed.

The only thing I want from my ruck is to be built like a truck, and interchangeable in style so that when they inevitably get injured the next bloke up can play in the same predictable way. It must have been hard for Cripps et al to plan around Pitto crashing and bashing one play, then TDK jumping and leaping the next last year.

Adding a third big unit wouldn't be the worst, but I think we've gone for Derksen instead which means that Lewis Young can likely be the extra ruck if the other two go down (with Weitering, an ahead of schedule Dean, McGovern, Derksen, and O'Farrell at some point covering 3 spots each week, we're fairly well set down back). If another defender or one of the rucks cops a season-ending injury I could definitely see us replace them via the LTI with another big unit via the mid-season draft though

I tend to agree.

We no doubt have a bit of spare salary cap, so could afford a free agent or significant trade, but the only long term list deficiencies we have are ruck, key forward and perhaps a running, distributing half back. Perhaps a prudent trade or the available free agent Briggs may be sensible for a ready to go ruck. Unless we have a poor year from our tall forwards, we should logically look to the draft for our future requirements. Likely if we have an urgent need, we would try Harry O’Farrell as a key forward on his return guven that long term Weitering and Dean, along with one other can hold down the key defensive posts. Derksen and Young are reasonable options in that space.

The upgrade in forward options small and medium has been quite spectacular. Talor Byrne is a keeper along with the mature trade ins, and Jack Ison looks a ripper to go with the promise of Moir and others. Again, likely we continue to add options as draft capital becomes available.

If the coming season does not expose serious deficiencies requiring immediate changes through high level free agency or trade deals, it is difficult to imagine parting with ~$1.5m+ for an in demand type like Zac Bailey or Ben King

I largely agree with what you’ve said, but a couple of factors are worth weighing up:

Do we project Ison long term as a forward rather than a full-time midfielder/sweeper?

And does the whole strategy shift if the AFL move the goalposts and we’re forced to pay overs for Cody compared to what was first expected? That could significantly limit our ability to pursue other trade targets or draft capital.

If that’s the scenario, then the smarter play might be to maximise value through the free agency market. In that context, I’d be comfortable walking away with Cody, Flyn Riley and Zac Bailey (FA via salary) as the overall return.

I do. I think he'll develop like Son of Vin. Wing until he gets stronger, then whichever key position screams loudest.

Super glad we chose Jagga at 3 and not Draper who was a very popular option on this forum.

Had we kept the 2 later picks instead, Murphy Reid and Joe Berry would have been my choices. Murphy was noted for his leadership and Joe for his presence around goals. Two areas I thought we were lacking.

Would’ve been fine for us to have kept the 2 picks but I’m happy they traded up for Jagga

Was all around good list management really, both of those options were and are better than Houston

Forget Butters, will cost far too much.
This is the guy we should be all in on, he’s a mid working in the front half and doing an incredibly good job at it although he misses a lot of easy goals which is another pointer to it not being his natural position.
He wants more mid time, unlikely to get much more with Brisbane. He’s electric out of a stoppage and bloody hard to tackle with his athleticism and agility.

Soap - do you get the sense that going forward it's going to be either Moir or Ison - are they sort of competing for the same spot or does Ison have more strings to his bow ?

If I go by what I was told when he arrived and pre season he is seen as very much a modern day midfielder who can go forward. Bit of Bont type. I thought they may start him at HB but he was in middle at weekend. I reckon he had 15-20 possessions but what he did with it was special. He has special traits

As for Moir my opinion is he could be classic Mid/Fwd type. We all know talent is not a problem but he has trouble finding it, influencing when forward

Early call but I think Ison is more mid where Moir is more forward who can play midfield in bursts

Reckon the Dons are going to throw some stupid money at him; it's really important we have a strong year (and they have a crap one) to help make our offer more competitive overall.

I wonder how west coast feel about Liam baker, bo Allen and Matt Owies for jagga smith. That will haunt them for a generation. Our Kennedy and masten for Judd and Dennis won’t even compare.

He will be ready to take the reigns off Cripps in 4-5 years time. Maybe we can trade Cripps at 35 for a first round pick inside 10 to west coast. And get another future super star.
