Bit harsh on Craig O'Donoghue. He asked alot of direct questions that people here wanted to be asked.
Perhaps, but what seems to me like a smug/gotcha attitude doesn't feel necessary. Also, a few of the questions didn't seem like real issues, but just populist talk scraped from anti-JL posts...

NRL crowds are small because TV is a better viewing experience which is the complete opposite to the AFL.
Cronulla play in a stadium thats a construction zone and from western sydney the shire takes nearly 1hr 20. Not many fans are interested in travelling to the Shire.

Its quicker for me to get to Newcastle then it is Cronulla from the Hills District here in western Sydney.

Manly/Northern Beaches is another isolated part of Sydney and can be a prick to get too on Public Transport. Plus another shithole of a ground Brookvale is.

I am curious what crowds the Bears get in Perth next year.

I took my son down to a afl juniors training session the other week, right in the middle of Giants territory.

I was really surprised to see the diversity there, Indians, Māoris, Lebanese, Asian kids. Kids with parents who were definitely not born in Australia either, very thick foreign accents. They were all loving it.

Europeans were maybe 30% of the participants that day, I’d expected 90%.

I had a chat to the club president and he told me they are growing year on year, grew 10% last year and expect to do the same again this year. AFL is covering a lot of the registration costs.

I asked about how the Giants are involved, he said Toby Green was recording a video for the club that week, they had Giants players down running a clinic the following week, and they were going to have kids from the club playing on the field at half time of opening round (my son will participate, I will try to give Mitchell a corkie).

I despise the academy system and opening round, but I must say now I live in Western Sydney, and have for the last 3 years after moving from Perth, I’m happy to see the AFL growing the game here, and the Giants are critical to that.

The Swans get a lot of eastern suburbs support in my experience, and the divide is real between east and west Sydney. I’m not sure the Swans would ever really penetrate out west.

It is still Rugby heartland, but not everyone seems to care about it, I hardly hear anyone talk about it at work like I did afl in WA.

I honestly think that the Giants will be a pretty big club one day, if they are and we ditch all these nonsense disequalisation measures, it will be well worth it.
GWS are a generation away at a minimum until the kids currently have families to pass down the line and become Giants fan.

I still dont see many people wearing Giants merch in Western Sydney.

It will never surpass League here though Penrith are now a big club with a Dynsaty.

The Bulldogs have south western Sydney covered

Since covid Rugby League has had a renassince in late 2010s the game was being stale but PVL and rule changes brought in has opened up the game and brought attacking footy back.

Doesnt mean GWS wont have there niche fans but until they half pack out the Showground regularly i cant take those members numbers seriously.

The answers are worth listening to. The interviewer is an idiot...
Genuine question, why do you think COD is an idiot? I think he's one of the better ones out there. I didn't think he was playing "gotcha" at all or trying to make JL look bad. He had stats to back up his questions on ball movement and other things, and JL had a good answers for all of them. There are a lot of idiots out there, I just don't see COD as one of them. I'm curious on your take.

I agree, I think COD is actually well informed and does his job, unlike others at that rag. Being and working with engineers tho myself, I think he's on the spectrum.
Of course hes on the spectrum...?
Its his superpower.
Ive got him on 9 out of 10 for that interview.

No worries, Daddoo. Being over in the east now for 10 years, I've lost touch with WA reporters so I hadn't seen him before. Just seemed like all the old questions all over again. Maybe he was truly trying to give JL an opportunity to clear the air, but it was just the long list of same questions that JL has already answered many times that put me off. He also struck me as trying to bait JL, but maybe I got the wrong impression

No worries. It's a sad state of affairs when the default reaction to most journos is "He's an idiot." haha. I find my patience for the same questions over and over and over again has dwindled. Maybe it's a me problem or maybe it's their fault. Hard to say. 😝😝 But there are so few really, really good ones out there that we become jaded and exhausted having to wade through the shallow end of the journo gene pool every day.

A recounting of Freo’s history and an assessment of the direction headed by the club, told by first-time “grassroots” analyst:

Thanks for posting. I was simultaneously triggered, hopeful, anxious, and excited while reading this article. 😂😂 I think it just reinforces my opinion that Garlick and Walls have been two of the most important figures in Freo's short history. I know we haven't won anything yet, but just the stability they've brought alone has been incredible. We don't hear about "player exoduses" or "transgressions off the field" anymore. If we win a flag in the next 3-4 years, perhaps we can leave the word "dockery" behind. I'd love for it to fade as a memory of who we were, not who we are.

Interesting read, glossed over the whole relocation to cockburn and removing the anchor and even trying to remove the name Fremantle from the club by Rosich,
Didn’t realise how hard 2020 was for JLo as they couldn’t afford line coaches as they were still paying out Lyon.

Interesting that so many laud those two yet everything that doesn’t work is laid squarely at the feet of Jlo. He’s also in charge of player development and team culture so he must be doing something right.

The lean years of 2016-2021 aren’t looking as bad anymore considering what we’ve seen from the worst in the business. Since we went to 18 teams, it is taking far longer to turn it around and we have done it with zero assistance unlike Melbourne, Brisbane, GC, plus North & now WC.

The whole (it)rational for round 0 was to have all the northern teams at home but not upset Carlton and Richmond and their 'traditional' season opener (since the deep murky depths of time in 2008).

Here's a simple solution they could have adopted straight away rather than this 4 year process: tell them to suck it up and just have a normal round 1 with all the northern teams at home against 4 of the 6 larger Vic clubs.

They would have raged for 2 weeks then forgotten the traditional opener ever existed...

The idea I had was every non-Victorian team plays at home in round one and North/Hawthorn host a team in Tasmania. Give the northern teams the big slots against the biggest teams anyway.

Freo, West Coast, Adelaide and Port against any real club will pull big crowds without the draw of your Collingwoods of the world.

Then Carlton play Richmond when the footy returns to Victoria the next week.
