Ollie Griffin
Forward | 186cm | 04/06/2007

Stats:
17 disposals, 9 marks, 5 inside 50s, 4 goals

Griffin is an absolute powerhouse seemingly on a collision course for the mid-season draft. He put on another marking masterclass against Oakleigh, searching high up the ground and bringing down pack marks. The over-ager showed a great knack for accessing the ball at the top of his reach and tends to play above his 186cm listing, so much so that Sandy would have hoped to have two of him out there. Griffin also utilised his booming kick to get the ball moving forward, including with an unbelievable goal from inside the centre square. He has the capacity to catch fire at times and is a genuine competitor – which extends to his underrated pressure game

Seems very interesting.

Also sounds like his attributes could make him a very good hbf if he’s not doing it as a forward.

Strong overhead , long kick.

Wonder if Rome is a chance if we have multiple picks. He’s been impressive this year
I like Rome and think he's probably better than a few players currently on our list. However, while we could still improve our defensive flankers, we desperately need to bring in players who fill other positions and if possible have higher ceilings. If we can unearth a Trembath type - someone who could become a high-marking offensive weapon - that would be ideal. Similarly, another Ramm type or a young ruck who can actually mark the footy would be fantastic.

Pick the most talented player at each pick regardless of position, given the lack of depth in the MSD. Ramm fell in our laps last year, and hoping for a similar outcome this time around.
best around leagues not just SANFL

I’m imagining that Port will go long-term rather than list cloggers that we need to move on fairly quickly.
No one over 25 please. Though the problem was more not releasing them at the end of the year's they were drafted. If we have a desperate need to plug a gap due to injuries and grab an older player, make it clear, unless they are outstanding, they are there for the short term.

Why do we need to draft a ruck?

They’re not going to be immediate upgrades on sweet / vis.

They’re not going to play with sweet or vis.

Do we need a ruck in case sweet or vis gets injured ? Not especially. We’re having a losing season anyway, what’s the downside of having to ruck wines / esava / lord for a couple of games on the unlikely chance both rucks get injured at the same time. Both rucks are fairly resilient.

If we were a contending team sure maybe have backup.

So then if we’re looking at a developing ruck, what’s the benefit of drafting one now versus the end of the year ? Beating a team to grab a state league ruck? Meh.

Don’t bother imo. Unless there’s a ruck who we think is a developing star talent don’t bother.

The next two drafts are pretty ruck heavy imo.

I think we’re better off served taking the best talent , and I doubt that’s one of the rucks

100% at this stage of our list cycle you take best available talent and plug holes later.

The reality with Rome is that if he was on our list we'd be talking about when he gets a game. Because he's not, and he's just amongst a bunch of other 'probably-not-good-enough' kids, it's hard to see him actually getting picked.

He's the same draft year as Moraes, obviously younger than Lorenz, etc, and has out performed them the last few weeks. However as I said, the kids in our SANFL team all probably wont make it either, so does that mean we should be bringing in more of that level, just because he's better than them, that's the question.

He could easily play AFL, and it's pretty good for a 2nd year kid to have averaged 31 touches so far this year He's calm, has a booming kick and executes ok. It's just a matter of whether he can actually cut it at the grade. Gotta think the club has had enough of a sample size now to know whether he should get the chance or not.
