Preview 2026 MSD Draft Prospects

Yeah same. Strike rate is pretty low.

But from next year onwards, every club should keep at least 1 list spot open for the MSD because second rounders in the national draft will blow out to pick 35+ for mid table and above teams. Because of the new draft rule changes and Tassie.

So if you can't get 2 quality kids in the top 35, regeneration becomes hard.

Bloody good point mate. The SPP and MSD are going to become critically important once your second rounders blow out to 50+.

Decent enough argument to take more mature agers from the state league during the next 3 years of compromised drafts rather taking picks from 50 and beyond.

As much as I’d like the opportunity to take the best or second best player in the MSD, if we put Thredgold on the LTI, it is genuinely refreshing that for the first time in years our season is going well enough for us to not be down the bottom of the ladder and have pick 1 or 2.

For what it's worth, my mail is we aren't going to put Thredgold on the LTI unless he suffers some kind of setback.

Make Bailey Scott retire and we're sorted.

Or Zac Fisher, or a few others
It sounds nice but it'll ruin club culture and then we're back at rock bottom again.

It also sets a terrible precedent for future recruitment. Players wouldn't come to us if we just sack players midseason, especially if they've been playing well in the 2s.

Delisting at seasons end is one thing but sacking midseason is nuclear.

Not really, but you never know what you could unearth.
Based on list needs and availability, who are your top candidates. I know you’ve dropped a few names, ie Bamert.

MSD has shown to have a decent hit rate for role players.

I think we'd be looking at -
Small gnarly defender with atleast neat skills. Big body mid that can run all day. Defensively minded hard running mid. Mature ruck.

And/or
Continuing to grab someone from our VFL program has positive ramifications for our talent pathways and attracting talent to the club.

We should definitely be finding a way of opening up a spot to utilise this draft. Also seems likely that MSD will have increasing success the longer it has been established.

Xav Bamert (North VFL)
Louie Montgomery (GWS VFL) left foot half back
Jackson Voss (Frankston VFL) dour half back
Kobe Ryan (West Adelaide) Inside Mid
Josh Tovey (Port Melbourne) 195cm inside mid/KF
Jaxson Artemis (TAS VFL) half back
Max Mapley (TAS VFL) Ruck

If we want a longer term option, Tom McGuane would be a decent option as a midfielder too.

luckily bailey scott hasnt done that either

so wont be sending that message if we can get him to retire early

Delusional much. Club Culture worth preserving? Wgaf if some are put out of place by removing a cat from our list who does nothing for our future endeavours, nothing.

Who's going to be put out by this? Anyone important? Who's he mates with? If he was mates with Weitering and that assisted us in getting Yacob, fabulous. He can stay but, life isn't fair, it's hard, you have to take your chances when they reveal themselves, old mate Fishers has not.

Should have been done already. Just wasting time.

So who was the last player sacked by a club to open up midseason draft pick?

Sacked or agreed to part ways in the best interests of both parties. Semantics.

An error of judgement, we were just so excited to hear a yes, we couldn't believe it.

Retiring is different. I know that happens sometimes.

But which club has sacked a player before the midseason draft?

Players papers are sometimes stamped during the seasons but sacking don't happen till post season. Why is that?

There's never really been the opportunity in the past, MSD is fairly recent, no?

You gotta game the system or system games you, it's as simple as that.

This is the 8th one and you haven't named a single player sacked before it.
I assume none.

Horses for courses though, how many teams have been in a position to potentially benefit like our exact position?

We're Clubhouse Leader on the MSD ladder since Thursfield took over, got it down to a fine art!!

Louie Montgomery got pushed up onto a wing in the GwS VFL game. Slow first half but ended up with 18 posessions and 3 goals. Really damaging ball use fwd of centre.

Didn’t watch the Port Melbourne/Werribee game but Josh Tovey was influential again. 16 disposals, kicked 2.3 and had 6 tackles. Such a unique prospect, not many 195cm midfielders running around dominating the state leagues.
