Lol come on mate.
?

He was head of strength and conditioning. Does he not deserve credit for his role in the flag?

I actually agree with you that many factors are in play for why Adelaide failed in the finals last year and the blame shouldn't just be laid at the feet of the high performance manager but by that same token that leeway should then also be given to Selwyn.

Last year we actually had a pretty good run with injuries but we were shit so no one cares.

You're missing the whole point though Bluey.

Firstly, Burgess was in charge. He'd had us for two preseasons by the time he had us firing through the 2021 finals. Selwyn was basically an assistant and arrived in November of 2020.

Secondly, you were comparing their records with second halves. They are not really similar in terms of when they've been the ones in charge.

In the 2021 finals, we were absolutely flying - Brisbane we only just edged in the second half, but we demolished Geelong and the Dogs in second halves.

In the 2022 finals we didn't kick a goal against Sydney in the last quarter (they also beat us in the 3rd), and Brisbane romped in 11 goals to our 5 in the second half of the Semi.

2023 finals - Carlton ran over us, and Collingwood held on due to our skills completely falling off a cliff due to our inability to execute - IMO due to fitness.

As mentioned, that's as close to apples v apples as you'll get given it's basically the same team, same coach, same style etc. So reckon you saying both Burgess and Selwyn teams fail in second halves is a fallacy.

My original point though - Is that Burgess is clearly the expert in his resilience philosophy and Selwyn has proven over the last few years to not have a handle on that. We've seen so many players breakdown due to not being handled properly, especially being brought in too early, and IMO we've already seen him do that with Bowey this preseason.

There's also the theory that Burgess teams can't keep up their S+C edge over teams for very long and end up flaming out.

I believe the same pattern occurred at Port when he was there and maybe one of the EPL teams? Can't quite remember
Would also explain why he changes jobs pretty much every 2-3 years too...

I think there are just way too many variables to make an apples v apples comparison either way. 2021 was probably the most blessed injury run I've ever seen in football, that requires at least a certain amount of luck. Selwyn was there for 2021 and knew the program. I doubt he was making major changes to a program that just won a flag. You have to also consider how much say the coaches have on this stuff. How seriously the players take things etc.

Burgess has pushed guys too far as well throughout his time, for example last year when he let Crouch play out a game with a busted shoulder that saw him miss the rest of the year.

I think during his second stint at port they had a bunch of soft tissue injuries one season.

Again, my point is - Burgess is CLEARLY better at the whole resilience philosophy than Selwyn is. That means Selwyn doesn't have to make major changes to the program, it simply means IMO he's not as good at managing that style of program (which was clearly what Goodwin wanted as the evidence shows) as Burgess is.

The context of that was how players are saying our current preseason is so intense and our injuries are already up there.

I do find it strange you raised our injury list for this year as a positive for Selwyn but apparently in 2021 it was all luck? Also think you'll find your perception might be that due to 'games missed', but in reality we consistently played underdone players who often got reinjured.
