Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
I didn't go early on a rookie,
So why did you?

Round 3, Welcome to the Grind

Round 1 gave us hope, Round 2 gave us chaos, and now comes Round 3, the week where SuperCoach stops feeling like a fun hobby and starts feeling like a second job you did not apply for.

And if you needed proof the season is well and truly alive, last week was injury carnage. Eight hamstrings. Eight. The SC Gods did not nibble, they took a full bite. Those that went early on Murdock are learning a key lesson - always wait 'til a rookie is on the bubble. Key premos already down, Rozee and Petracca both looking like extended stints on the shelf, and suddenly half the competition is doing trade maths with one hand and holding an ice pack with the other.

Now here’s the trap, campaigners. This week feels like it should be all about fixing the injuries. And yes, some of it is. But Round 3 is also the cash gen checkpoint, because the teams that didn’t play Opening Round now have their players hitting the bubble, and their prices change next week. If you are missing the right cheapies, you have one week to get ahead of it before the train leaves the station.

Which brings us to the boring, brutal truth of early season SuperCoach:

Cash gen is everything.
Not vibes. Not “I’ll back my structure”. Not “I’ll fix it later”. Later is where rookies dry up, job security turns to mush, and cash generation becomes harder than convincing yourself not to sideways a premium after a 74.

And right now, the must-have rookies are the must-have rookies. If you don’t have them, you need to get them.

Must-have rookies:
  • Jacques
  • McAndrew
  • Robertson
  • Jagga
  • Blamires
  • Todd
  • Cook
If you’re missing any of those, trade to get them in. Even if you’re carrying injured premos. Even if you are emotionally attached to a name. If you have to flick an injured premo to fund a missing rookie, do it. Because the season is not won by “holding strong” in March, it’s won by building a war chest while everyone else is bleeding points and cash.

And while we’re here, Sharp has to go. Bubble weeks are not charity weeks, and rookies that stop generating cash are just expensive bench ornaments.

Round 3 is where you get ruthless, but smart-ruthless. Fix what you must, but don’t miss the bigger play: load up on cash cows now, because the rookie tap does not run forever. It turns off. And when it does, you will either have the money to buy the premiums you actually want, or you’ll be sitting there in Round 9 trying to generate cash from a bloke averaging 43 and “showing some signs”.

Good luck this week, campaigners. May your rookies keep their spots, may your hamstrings remain intact, and may your trade finger prioritise cash gen over feelings.

PS: Scythe is one impatient prick. Take a seat. Chill out man.

(Yes, I haven't had the time to write a preview this week, thanks for asking)

Would be remiss of me not to mention the great man's 250th this week 🐐

What's the highest ever 2-rd-avg? Xerri will beat it this week.
Last year Xerri went 187-186 in the last 2 rounds, and Gawn in Rounds 7/8 went 174-198.
Outside of those 2 I think Jack Macrae had a 4-round average of like ~170 during 2018. Pretty sure GAJ would have a few 2-round averages of 180+ too.

Hoping to hold my overall rank of 4.5k this week. Had a great one last week moving up 48k overall, but going from 23 players playing to 18 if Lindsay and Gibcus can't get back in the side this week.

Ok - I’ve given everyone a decent head start, now I’m concentrating :-)

I’m gonna be charging back from an overall rank of 93K - watch out!

One for you Jiska

Explain to me why the Port v West Coast game is starting at 12pm Adelaide time on Sunday before the Melbourne v Carlton game.

Why wouldn't you start the Melbourne game at 1.00pm Victorian time and then the Port game could start at 3pm Adelaide time and they would not clash. There are only 2 games on Sunday.

West Coast supporters living in Perth have to turn their tv on at 9.30am in the morning to watch the game.

Whoever does the AFL scheduling has rocks in their head.
