I'm concerned about the lack of experienced midfielders on our list.

Our oldest is Elliot Yeo who has just turned 32 and is very injury-prone. He's played just 57 games in the past six years. Our next oldest if Tim Kelly, who is 32 in July, and whose form is waning to say the least. Jack Graham is just filling a wing while the likes of Bo Allan, Hamish Davis and Sam Allen develop. Then the experience - at least in age - drops off dramatically.

While we've drafted Robertson, Macrae and Schoenberg onto our rookie list, I'm not as optimistic about them as others on here are. None are in our starting 18 on a good day. Elijah Hewett is our next bona fide midfielder but will only be 22 in May and is injury prone.

I hope Tom McCarthy (25) comes on, but this is currently his first full pre-season at AFL level and it may take him a while to find his feet in the guts at the highest level. Hopefully Hough (23 in March) goes in the guts on rotation too which makes us more dynamic and flexible as a side.

Maybe one or two of the three experienced rookies take their game to the next level for a couple of years while the kids develop, but the lack of midfield talent between say 24-28 on our list is concerning.
B/S Robertson will be a great pick up. A player who would rank between 25-30 at Brisbane would easily rank in our top 15-20.

All true, but we have tried to get players in the preferred age group across but naturally it has been a hard sell over the past few years.

We have built really strongly through the draft though, there is work still to go but Hewett, Harley, Duursma (with the Allen/Allan/s, Gross + others still young enough to have a chance) is a very good core. Add to the fact we have Hough, Ginbey, Lindsay down back, Shanahan fwd (we lack exposed small forward talent, but we may find some this year) - our young sticks are finally promising.

Agree wholeheartedly.
If we draft well in 2026, add 1 more piece to the midfield add 2 KPD's and best available talent with our NGA's/FS prospects then our core through the draft will be VERY good on set up or prolonged success.

This is a big hole that we have in our team.
Currently a definite hole. Good news is we have some candidates that hopefully come on this year. Newton & Williams will hopefully show something this year. Possibly Gross as he looks to be a fair way down the pecking order now for inside mid time. I think this might be a position they try Sam Allen also as he works his way back from the ACL. If we don't find anyone this year you would have to think this is a list need at next draft.

FYI Bobby Hill has signed a 4 year extension with Collingwood in 2025.

Yep, we've (hopefully) drafted well the past four years. My point pertains to the fact that when Hough, Ginbey, Hewett, Harley & co 'come on' when they're 23/24 there isn't much talent a few years above them in age. That'll bite.

Contracts aren't worth the paper they are written on.
I know. Sounds like he's looking to come back to W.A. similar to the Neale situation his ex has moved back to W.A. with the kids. Would we pay him 450k a year at 25 to play for us? I think that's a pretty fair price. He fills a hole in our side. Right age bracket. He's had interrupted pre-seasons in 2025 and now 2026. I understand whatever his situation is, is probably very difficult. Again I'm not against it just weighing up the situation.

eaglevision, do you trust the feedback offered over on 2026 AFL Draft General Discussion about KPD options Kale Mathews-Hampton SA, Tate Hodgson VM & Xavier Ladbrook VC??
And do you or anyone else have some info or insights on these players?

They are all generally good posters, hard to get in the flesh insights of kids before their top age year so although it was limited information it’s still information. Didn’t realise Ladbrook was more of a HB type for example but have an eye more on the other two.

Bovill from Tassie is also a good player but I believe he can opt to be listed by Tasmania and spend a year in their VFL team if he wishes. A two year contract would also put him in their sights at the end of 2028.

Mitchell Stirling with a 3R pick remains my KPD preference, along with adding Shanahan as a Cat B.

Appreciate the insights.
Found their thoughts interesting.

Ladbrook being defined as a HB is interesting, he has been described by others as a unicorn athletic freak like CDT and played across all 3 lines.
T Hodgson and M Stirling look very nice prospects.
Still a long way to go for sure.

Bovill would be hard to extract if he has the Tassie preference, Tassie players would be all hoping to be part of an inaugural Tassie team first imo.

I'm still of the opinion that Archer Reid would make an excellent KPD if he doesn't become our number 1 ruck.

I think CDT has more upside as a forward and there won't be much room in there when Jed Walter comes over next season.
I hope we dont go for Walter, he'd cost a fortune

That will depend on his 2026 form.

Plenty of doubters both in the media and Suns fans.

He OOC and we will be bottom 5.

Ah chee and the Crows again just reminded clubs what happens when clubs losing an OOC player dig their heels in.

Split our low pick and use one 1st for Walter plus future picks for the Suns to use paying for academy kids coming off the production line.

Apart from costing a lot if Shanahan and Waterman both have good years then where do you see him playing?.
Push Waterman up the ground away from his best spot?
Shanahan to the backline?
We'll still have resting rucks in the forward pocket and CDT is looking like he'll start as a forward more than ruck.
Walter would want to have a bloody good year for us to trade for him

Id use a 1st rounder for Jedd
We will have a top 3 pick.

You’d either have to hand that over, or split it and get two later firsts and give one of those. Either way you miss out on the top end talent you’d get at 3 for a player that doesn’t fill a spot of need, and hasn’t yet shown he’s going to be a gun.

If there has been no development he wouldnt still be there.

Fact is drafting an 18 yr old ruck rarely show returns for 5 plus years and this age of instant gratification fans lose patience for anything that takes time.

Should also be noted several top picks used on rucks thrown in the deep end too early had shortened careers. Fraser at rhe Pies and Cruiser at Carlton. Both top picks and both thrown into the meat grinder too early and they suffered because of it.
When Simpson was throwing Oscar Allen into the ruck regularly my support for the coach started to vanish.

Not sure if it resulted in Oscars repetitive injuries but I reckon he paid a price for that responsibilty being put on him

Not a position of need?

We have Waterman who is a 191cm 3rd tall mobile tall forward.

And who else?

Relatively unproven kids and those like J Williams and B Williams with question marks on if they will make it.

Á Reid and his kicking is an issue, could end up ruck or in defense.

Shanahan looks very promising.

Maric?

While I agree Walter is a very good talent, I think he is a JK type with his running capacity but also his contested marking.
For his age he has done very well, 2 seasons really, played 30 games and for a KPF he is tracking VERY well.
He needs to fix his conversion and consistency but all the attributes are there.

If he doesn't play half the season and play before JUH he should be on the move and I would be rating him as a late 1st round pick as a price.
I would not be splitting our 1st pick in 2026 as this needs to be for the best balanced midfielder in the draft that we can get.
Use future picks to make it happen.

We can use Waterman/Shanahan/Walter in the forward set up, Waterman has maybe 3 years at the top left in his career and Walter/Shanahan would be an awesome combination for the next 10 years.

What will be interesting is whether WC see young Koby LeCras as the next KPF/KP player, Mark LeCras nephew who is tracking as a KPF around the late 1st early second round pick this year.
Maybe 1 of these KPF's/KP players turn out to be a KPD??

Zach Merrett may disagree …

They give clubs leverage to maximise trade value and I think we saw that with Merrett no going and arguably overs being paid for Curnow, Petracca.
Yep. Plus Marshall ect.

Curnow would be playing at Geelong, Trac probably at the Pies but the teams couldn’t get the deals down so they had to go to teams that could.

Having players contracted is still very valuable.

Waterman, despite his size he's much more effective close to goal, not as a roaming forward up the ground
If Waterman gets back to his best I dont think we need to spend that draft capital on a key forward
