If Humphrey has a so-so year and is still rattling the cage he won't cost two firsts.
"Two firsts" is such a vague currency descriptor anyways. Same logic as when people rage about us not getting "two first rounders" for Petty. Would happily give up picks 22 and 23 for Humphrey...

Sure but I think when most people talk about that hypothetical trade it's our current first rounder plus Gold Coasts (Or whatever we can turn that into).

Let's say a top 10, potentially top 5 pick and a pick between 10-20 before academies and father son nominations. That's probably what our current draft hand looks like right now.

If Humphrey has a breakout season then I'd say that's the trade we should expect. If he's a bit flaky and only having stand out games every few weeks then you probably don't want to be giving much more than a first outside the top 5 or something.

Agree with you Leggy, more just talking about the whole perception around it and how "two firsts" gets thrown around by the media and others..... to garner a bit more outrage when, like most things, reality is a little more complex.

I really like Bailey H and am quietly hoping he struggles to get much midfield time and we can get him a bit cheaper.

Yeah, him having a big breakout year kinda makes the trade super hard without significantly over paying. I guess with Trac there now he ironically gets pushed down the queue and that is less likely. Will be tough to attract him though when the big Vic clubs have a year to prepare a deal, think we were close this year just because of the Petracca deal and the other clubs didn't have time to sort something.

It's vague if you don't use common sense. When people say 2x firsts, it implies that we're not talking about pick 1 and 2 or pick 22 and 23. Obviously.

I think if Humphrey has another so-so year then he'd warrant just one 1st rounder. But if we finish bottom 3, I don't think we'd cough it up for Humphrey. We could perhaps split that pick though. Like 3 for 8 and 12 or something and then use of those alongside Gold Coasts first rounder that we have.

Agree on all points.

Re the other Vic clubs, the only things we have going for us would be:

  • Relationship with King
  • Significant midfield time for us
  • Being a Moe boy and not hating the Casey trips

Oh, we’d also now have some big $ to throw around too.

I try to use body language

I dont think that would make any difference. Having to drive an hour or so to training is a pain in the ass no matter where you live.

It probably would never be a deciding factor but it would put a fair few potential recruits off I reckon.

If he’s from there and a lot of family/friends are still there, it could be appealing.

Humphrey aside, it would put me off.

I’ve been in situations where you have to choose, and convenience and travel time play a big role. Why wouldn’t it be a consideration? If you have to spend an hour getting to work and an hour back, that’s two hours lost from your day.

It sounds like a big deal, but if you have an offer from another employer that gives you that time back, that weighs into your decision.

It’s one of numerous reasons Saints fought hard to get out of Seaford. And our current set up is much the same

Yep. As someone who commutes from about 1hr outside Melbourne for work every week, I'd give up a lot to have a job even 30 min closer.
