I don't mind the academies for the North, but I think the AFL should fund the development league here in Vic enough then that 18-21 year old undrafted kids don't just go back and take cash from country clubs. So maybe AFL clubs can take a handful of undrafted players and bring them into the AFL system to develop them and get to take them as rookies if they want them for free.

I agree with your sentiment, AFL House needs to do more to fund and develop junior and local competitions. They should get back to their primary purpose as custodians of the game, rather than signing TV deals to lock fans out behind paywalls.

However, I don't follow your proposal for undrafted kids. You're asking the league to step in and micromanage a bunch of young blokes who weren't good enough to be drafted but are good enough to get paid playing local footy. The league shouldn't interfere with players who are just trying to ply their trade and make cash elsewhere.

The clubs already have 40+ list spots. If a recruiter thinks a kid has AFL potential then they'll use one of those spots on him. Handing the keys over to AFL house to run some sort of waiting room league is unnecessary. How is this going to result in a better outcome than the current system?

If they're good enough, they'll get picked in one of the half-dozen drafts that happen each year.

Doesn't help we play Salem and Lindsay together who aren't much as defenders and now without May and Petty falling off a cliff Lever isn't able to be a pure interceptor.

Yeah I agree - I thought they'd try develop Kolt as that type of player as I think it suits him, but it seems they're trying to use him to attack and with Bowey/Salem/Lindsay/AMW on the list already I'm not sure that is smart.

There’s a genuine dearth of quality small lockdown players in the AFL. For example, here is the current OOC list of players who could play that role:

But even then a lot of them are more intercept/rebound players and in the case of Mansell and Byrne Jones, blokes who play forward.

Couple of tidbits around players we have previously been interested in - Duursma & Tsatas. (Think that was pre sKing though, so might not care about them anymore). Also apparently Twomey said we're no shot with Butters.

Zane Duursma, who the Kangaroos selected at pick No.4 12 months after Wardlaw, is also out of contract and yet to hold meaningful discussions with the Kangaroos.

The 28-year-old is one of 16 Bombers who are out of contract this year, with the majority to be decisions held for later in the season. That group includes former top-10 picks Archie Perkins, Nik Cox and Elijah Tsatas, with Tsatas having been on the radar of clubs last year and rivals expecting Perkins to look for a fresh start if he can't break back into the Bombers' line-up consistently.
