Are Tom Sparrow and Kade Chandler good players?

Both free agents this year.

Tom Sparrow had 29 disposals and 9 clearances tonight.

Never really noticed him, but looks good.
Kade Chandler looks like he could be Sully's brother.
He played really well tonight and is fast, I reckon the Dees will lock him in shortly.

I’m super sad about Reef. Definition of horrible luck. I hope he can come back and be a good player for us. Only 23. Give him all the time he needs.

When I heard yesterday we were keen on that Geelong midfielder (Herbert) I thought with what pick? Then today Reef goes down…

I wonder if a decent key defender is what we’ll be hoping for.

I’m confident Herbert gets to the Eagles unfortunately.
There's a few talls about, he might fall to us. 🤞

Joel Amartey is a great size for a key forward at 197cm/ 97kgs. He turns 27 in September. He is currently in his 7th year at the Swans, he has struggled with injury and consistency of form. He has suffered multiple significant hamstring injuries and high grade abductor strains/ tears throughout his career. He has played 67 of a possible 142 games.

He has played more than 15 games in a season only once (2024) when he played 25 games and kicked 43 goals (something which he has not come close to before or since.

At 197cm, he is a low contested marking output for a genuine key target (1 contested mark) and his “On lead” numbers suggest he may rely heavily on system supply.

He offers a second ruck chop-out if needed and he potentially complements rather than replace a more mobile forward setup.

As with Mitch Lewis, Amartey’s 67 of 142 possible games (47% of games) is the biggest red flag.

His repeated significant hamstring injuries (every season) and high-grade adductor issues is a real red flag for a power athlete reliant on repeat leading and explosiveness. For an older, win-now side like the Pies, availability matters almost more than upside.

Career Stats:
5.5 kicks; 2.3 HB; 3.4 M; 1 CM; 0.7 on lead; 1.5 goals; 1 BH 2.8 shots on goal per game; 52.9% accuracy. His goal kicking accuracy this season has improved to 55% thus far significantly higher than last year’s poor 43%
Agree with assessments on both Amartey and Lewis, both have amazing fraud potential.

King and Butters are the priority, otherwise save the money/try re-sign Nick with a huge front load.

The silver lining is that when they re-sign, they both would be having break-out years' when being out of contract, and the obvious effects that will have on Melbourne's cap.

2027?
B. IQ. Frampton. Maynard
HB. Perryman. Moore. Houston
C. Jaicos Butters. Hill
HF. Mcreery. McStay. HH
F. Shultz. King. West

R. Steene. Naicos Degoey

Int. Crisp Steele Anderson Cameron Howes

Solid side
Cliff Avoided
Butters and King make it happen Leppa
I’d be lying if I said that I haven’t been creating teams with Butters and King in them for 2027.

I don't think we have the collateral for both Butters and King. Butters and Amartey maybe.
King is more of a chance than Butters
Suns won’t have cap to match whereas Port will force a trade.
If we tank this year maybe we can get a pick that would help?

A lot more bullish on our depth then I was a few weeks ago with Steele, Anderson, Steene, Hayes, West, and Harrison all looking like solid AFL players.

On the back of this, more optimistic we should go all in for Butters (or King), as I am confident we can find the role players around Naicos and Butters to make us a force.

You can dream we get both
Certainly more enticing if you tell one we are getting the other

Only realistic way Butters comes here is if he specifically requests to come to the Pies
Yes that’s generally the way it works for any trade or free agent… 😂

There are not the usual out number of contract players at the end of this year. List spots are tight. So disappointing that Reef has gone down. Picking up a player in the MSD is an opportunity. It could also result in a list position being taken up by a limited or project player. MSD are shallow and selections are largely best available not need. We have multiple needs so the two could align. We also need players with elite/AFL traits. These MSD frequently result in clubs passing. I could see and support the club deciding to pass on a MSD pick. The list doesn’t need to be clogged with fringe players.

Although he is their best forward, I still don’t think Gold Coast will match so they can spread the money to others coming out of contract and bank on Reid and Walter. Would mean that whatever we would consider giving GC can go to Port.

Ben King is the proven key forward, but I’d love for us to put the squeeze on Gold Coast and get Jed Walter if they push to keep King.

I wouldn't say no to him, but a little bit concerned about Ben King's ability to get the ball in any situation where its not an easy mark on the lead.

Of course but what I meant was we don’t have the resources to just throw a decent offer at Port to get him, if he specially requests us it might be a touch easier

The Temu option isn't too shabby though and would cost nothing in relative terms.

B. Maynard. Butts. Frampton.

Might not be as big a number but a fair few who look very likely to not be there next year.

I'd add Membrey to the 3 often listed veterans. Then a few in the VFL who probably won't get extensions if they don't have a rise - Smit, Sully, Ryan.

I don't think we'll be tight for list spots.
