I don’t think any key forward benefits in our system currently. The better question is which key forward is least disadvantaged imo.
Need a forward target that draws the umpires attention.
One that can gain the odd favourable whistle in a marking contest like some of these other key forwards so we can capitalise more regularly on our forward entries.
The amount of frees and goals some of these other forwards are gifted for even the slightest contact in a contest is embarrassing.

Plugger would have kicked over 2000 goals if he played under todays rules.

I mean the obvious answer is Thilseeker or Darcy, but if it’s a guy you might get a sniff of then it’s Treacy. Saturday nights game was a bit off broadway and Voss’ histrionics took most of the spotlight from what was a pretty lacklustre contest, but he was phenomenal.

He’ll kick 60+ this year barring injury and it would absolutely translate if he moved. The way he flies at the ball with his dukes is league best with only Thilthorpe his peer primarily because he’s so ****ing huge.
He'd be great, but unfortunately doesn't seem at all inclined to leave this decade.

Agreed I don’t see it happening and you’d need a return to Victoria to do a lot of the heavy lifting for it to be remotely possible when he hits FA, but I think he’s a top 5 KPF in the league, the best fit for our mix and despite how remote it is the most likely to move (aside from King) of that upper echelon.

Don't see him as a Josh Kennedy (i.e. sharpshooter, opportunist) style player at all.

I think a better description would be a bigger, more athletic and talented Brodie Mihochek. e.g. Brodie Mihocheks competativeness/application in Charlie Curnows body.

Nonetheless, would be a great get.

I don’t think he’s a good fit for us. He’s low possession and completely reliant on a Dunstall/ Lockett/ Capper ability to turn every possession into a goal. He has 16.1 on the season from 24 disposals which is a lot easier to manage when you’re taking most of your shots 30 out directly in front with 10 people and a dog in the stands and 40 points up. We play a lot more attritional style of football which is essentially akin to finals every week unlike the GC Globetrotters.

I suspect his numbers against the top 4 and in finals last year is more representative of what we’d be getting than the 5 goal a game player we currently see.
Our playstyle has changed each year under Fly and will change again once Pendles and Sidebottom retire so I wouldn’t make a decision to recruit King based off how we play now.

Gold Coast is prepared to match any free agency deal for footy’s hottest forward Ben King, unwilling to lose a second premier key forward in a decade after Tom Lynch’s 2018 departure.

The Herald Sun can reveal that despite a tight salary cap Gold Coast has already committed to matching rival free agency deals from clubs like Collingwood and Hawthorn if King makes the decision to depart as a restricted free agent.

Carlton was blown out of the water by St Kilda’s Tom De Koning offer last year and never considered matching his $1.7 million contract but the Suns are resolute on keeping their man.

King is considering his options and could sign a two-year deal with the Suns through to unrestricted free agency (10 seasons) after a stunning start to the year that has seen him kick 16 goals from 18 total kicks.

But he has told the club that his decision will be based on where he wants to live his life away from football while also considering on-field considerations.

It means that the Suns’ status as premiership contenders is not guaranteed to keep him, even though opposition still believe he is more likely to stay.

Rivals had believed the Suns’ cap picture might mean they could crowbar him out of the club with massive long-term deals well in excess of $1.5 million a year.

Clubs are prepared to offer inflated figures for players who they can secure as free agents instead of trade prospects but the Suns stance means clubs would need multiple first-rounders in a trade in the event he moved on.

Speaking to this masthead after his seven goals against Richmond, King said he was in no rush to reach a resolution on his playing future as the unbeaten Suns maintain their winning run.

But he stressed he was confident the external talk surrounding his contract would not negatively impact his playing fortunes, evidenced by his 16 goals in three games so far.

“It is pretty consuming week to week in the season playing good footy and you are reviewing for the last game and prepping for the next,” King said.

“I’m not stressed about that (the contract) at all.

“It will take care of itself … it will get sorted. My manager is really good with that sort of stuff. I am really focused week to week, and it isn’t an issue for me … that will get sorted.”

Unlike Port Adelaide, which has millions in cap space to match a Zak Butters offer, the Suns have an array of highly paid players including Matt Rowell, Noah Anderson, Touk Miller, Christian Petracca, Daniel Rioli and Mac Andrew.

But the Suns list team would instantly match any restricted free agency deal and hope to either convince him to stay or then broker a trade.

New AFL list rules are about to come into place which will restrict the amount of free agency compensation a club receives for a departing star.

The AFL is likely to basically quarantine the first top eight picks in the national draft from free agency compensation, meaning no reprise of West Coast securing the No.2 overall pick for Oscar Allen’s departure.

But on current ladder position the Suns would only receive a late teens pick if King did depart.

Clubs like Collingwood and Hawthorn are leading the charge for King but would have to come up with multiple first-round selections to trade for him in the event he exercised his free agency rights and Gold Coast matched a deal.

Clubs have to match those bids in exact terms - including the number of years and quantum of salary - with a player then having the option to stay, force a trade, or go into that year’s national draft.

Lynch left the club as a co-captain in a seismic call that the club’s chief executive Mark Evans admitted on the weekend forced the club into a list reset given the magnitude of his loss.

The Suns are intent on keeping King and his understudy Jed Walter, who already has interest from clubs including West Coast.

They have made clear to him how highly they value him and their plans to turn him into an AFL regular in coming seasons as a forward-ruck.

But he is behind King and Ethan Read in the forward line pecking order, with Reid kicking four goals in a breakout game while Walter kicked only a single major from five possessions.

So have to be north of 2m at Least
I just can't see how they can match. They have quite a few players on big money and quite a few who will be demanding big money. The AFL probably cooked the books for them.

Tassie will come hard for him..but after Brad Scott threw Caddy under the bus in the presser yesterday and knowing he only signed a 2 year extension until the end of next year...let's get in his ear.
Yeah I was thinking yesterday we should also aim our cash at him.

I can see it happening.

Miss out on King and Walter but end up signing Archer May
So who did better, Essendon gazumping us or us with Roan Steele.
I haven't been following how well Archer is doing but think we're pretty happy with Roan.

Make a huge offer and allow them to blow their cap

Then watch all the other players shake loose
