I'd be pretty happy seeing Voss able to shove off and run through every defender in the league.
He benched his way to a few goals and goal assists last year already. It’s so good to watch.

Exactly, if the only material thing to come from that lift is that Voss knows he can do it then his confidence on the field to run through an opponent will be forever in his kit bag.

I remember peak Fyfe had leg strength that made it look like grown men dripped off him as water off a duck as he ran through them.

With Voss training with the rucks we might see something similar and if he turns into a key forward who can also be a clearance mid we will be slipping off the seats at Optus with relief that he is signed for the rest of his career with us already.

I'm still stuck on how doing heavy squats will help his game outside of being able to chair off Darcy and Jackson himself (surely building more muscle and pushing his max at a reduced range of motion will impact his flexibility?)

It makes you harder to knock off your line running, for some reason.

And he's not hard enough?

Not convinced he needs to optimise that part of his game any further. We've had issues in the past with players bulking up too much and then finding themselves too slow and injury prone - I hope that's not what happens here

Is this good form or not? 😉

That is dumb, clearly too heavy ego lifting.

If you can't do it with proper form then you're trying to show off, not improving your strength.

Not worth the injury risk.

I'm not convinced he is going to bulk up from single/low rep near max effort lifts - but he will get stronger. It's far more in line with playing/practical use than 8-12 reps of repeating actions around 75% max, weakening the first triggered muscle fibers until the rest are recruited by the failure at the end - just to my eye anyway.

I don't want him building muscle volume for the sake of it, I want his burst efforts to be stronger, not able to repeat effort run 80% as good all day.

You ever seen those guys running along like kangaroos, bouncing along like their legs have zero trouble carrying their weight? Like that. Running is a single leg squat like exercise and his sprint work is really a function of being able to get as much torque to ground to get him moving as quickly as possible - this will lead to that with appropriate technique.

Agree with you there, thanks for the context

In my days of sledge hammer swinging, we had a few of the Eagles boys come join us for jobs. Annear, Malaxos, also had Craig Nelson, the two Farmer boys.
All useless at swinging a sledge hammer. Ja at least tried, the others were not even close to getting it.And I am no giant, but had the knack of swinging the hammer.
Mustards?

Nothing wrong with that form considering it's a max effort 1RM, albeit a qtr depth box squat.

There is a school of thought that qtr ROM squats are beneficial for athletes due to increased carry-over to running and jumping, because they allow athletes to go heavier in the range that's more specific to movement performance while accumulating less fatigue than full ROM.

I would like to see him doing sprint training. that first 5-10 metres. With that weight and power plus sprint speed he is virtually unstoppable.

When were u there? (Remember a few eagles at the end of my stint in 89 or 90 - cant remember names though.)
Pre America cup and years beyond..
Spent abiut 15years part time there. But part time meant plenty of time.
Worked when the Pope visited.
We would have to have worked together.
Was a firie.😉

I think Tom Hawkins when I see his box squatting 300kg! Hawk kicked 34 in his third year (Voss kicked 37 last year in 4 fewer games) and then, a few years later, was bordering on unstoppable. We should be trying to get Voss into the type of role. Forward half ruck when required, although with two dominant rucks, it's not really needed, and a good lead-up target. Hawk was great at that push off to get 5m on his opponent, too. The other similarity is Hawk really struggled with accuracy early but by the end was a fantastic set shot. Hopefully Voss can hone his set shot craft in a similar fashion.

I'm starting to get really bullish about this year. The players are clearly driven and that is more than half the battle in my eyes. Release the shackles JL. This group is ready to pop!!!

If Voss can continue his beast mode trajectory it pairs with Treacy as being one of the all time steals.

Could be 2 unstoppable power forwards in the FWD line who both cost barely anything
