All based on the idea that more teams = more games = more eyeballs on the screen = larger advertising audience = larger broadcast deal.

I take a more cynical approach to it. I think the broadcasters will start to lose interest in some games in some markets, even more than now, and without having requirements to broadcast some games into their local markets you might find North games just aren't on TV anymore unless it's against Collingwood or Carlton etc.

Taking the example to the extreme where there is a game on all the time, audiences will tune in for their team and tune out the rest - the graph of the audience interest will be very clear in each market.

There is a future where a broadcaster offers enough money that all of the games will be on subscription broadcasting, locking out audiences like Saturday footy only on Fox, and then if markets don't warrant the game - such as North playing Freo in Melbourne not being of interest to many people at all - no broadcast at all.

The quality of the product is at least as important as the quantity of it. The quality is better with fewer teams.

That’s actually an honest take. Can’t quite put finger on it whether this list is good enough. It still needs something.
Feel like Fremantle of years’ past had a superstar in each position with A-B graders.

Pavlich with Mayne, De Boer.
Fyfe with Mundy.
McPharlin with Johnson, Dawson.

The small forward is a real worry. Ballas and Walters kicking 30-50 was a bonus.

Feel like this list just needs an out and out superstar to push this group forward.
Jackson really need to be consistent and dominate games.
I think he's trying to say that Youngy and Dogga are those players potentially, but for different reasons, haven't reached those heights yet.

Possibly, but I would think people will still tune in to big games, or perhaps where there is a bit extra spice - for example if I think a showdown will be close I’ll watch it.

And if the extra teams are in places where there isn’t one already then you are a better chance of attracting new people to the game.

To make my point with a hyperbolic example.

Double the number of AFLW teams, half of each team's current talent stripped out for it and replaced with not currently AFLW standard players, sprinkle the teams in NSW and QLD. How many people do you think will be brought to the game?

It will be more than zero, but the ratings have to beat Rex Hunt's Fishing show reruns or they just play the rerun.

The quality of the product is what attracts new people to the game.

Said it yesterday but our season lives and dies on guys like Pearce, Young, Darcy and Switta being fit and firing for the majority of the season. If 3 out of 4 of those guys can play 20 odd games it will go a long way.

That and JL needs to take the shackles off more often. No more hyper-conservative minimalist trying to win games playing 1 quarter of proper footy crap.

Yeah but in this case it actually is the best list we’ve ever had or very close to it.
Im sure next year they'll be saying the same thing. It might be true but just like players saying theyre in the best shape of their life every pre season it means little until we get meaningful games.

AFLW I’d agree, but give it time, but for AFL I think this whole talent pool thing is more than offset by more investment in the game, better coaching etc., which you see with the players coming out of the northern states.

The number of gun mids in the comp is more than ever, go back to when Freo started and there were way more average players going around.

And in any case I think people dial in for theatre, there will still be enough guns around, but coaching will keep improving.

Swans fans, you'll miss 3 of the first 6 games if you don't have Fox Footy, available on Kayo

We are already there, and Kayo is getting more expensive.

I think Swans fans in Sydney will get them delayed, by 2 or 3 hours.

Saying it's the best list we've ever had isn't saying that we're going to have the best season we've ever had. It's pretty clearly objectively true - we've never had this many All Australians, high picks that have delivered on potential and genuine A graders before. It just needs to click. We'll see if it does

I think the Dockers midfield is superior to the WA midfield.
So do I lol.

I'm surprised any of our guys that played Origin are playing Saturday, let alone Clark. I see most if not all origin participants are missing the game this week.

Can't wait to see us in action again on Saturday morning even though I'll have to keep reminding myself that this is just for conditioning mostly this week.

Will Brodie says hello
Big difference being we signed on Brodie before he fell out of favour. I imagine at the time they very much thought he'd be a big part of the future. Then he got dropped, brought back, dropped again, and ever since his WAFL performances fell down a cliff.

Sharp got re-signed after his down season. They know what he is - whether in a positive or negative sense. They didn't jump at the decision and sign him early. So to sign him now says that even in his down period they see something.

I think "lock" is an exaggeration - to me it's more likely our starting wings are Wagner and inside mids cosplaying as wingers. But I also think they see some value in Sharp and see him as at least real competition.
