Training 2026 Training Reports

It's not the set play from a bounce that's the issue, it's the ball movement out of the back fifty that is the problem.

Yes and I already said

1. If we are winning the majority of the clearances, and we have Treacy down there either marking or halving the contest, ball movement and field position becomes less of an issue

2. The whole purpose of the McVee recruitment was to address this issue. If him and Clark are breaking lines and opening up the ground, going long to a contest isn’t our only option anymore.

Most teams have their ruckman being the marking options down the line anyway. Jackson has the athleticism and always gets first hands to it but somehow always drops it, and Darcy can barely get off the ground and takes a lot less marks then the average ruck. There was this American guy who was a pretty good contested mark, but his name escapes me 🤔

But when Treacy goes up the ground, he is able to tackle and apply pressure, hardly a strong suit of Jye's.

I would have thought that is more important inside 50. We have midfielders and others who can tackle up the ground. One of our major weaknesses is locking the ball inside our forward line. We rate pretty badly for tackles inside 50.

Spot on and that’s also why we went small forward heavy at this years draft.

Last year the four preliminary finalists ranked in the top 5 for tackles inside 50. From memory I think we were 13th.

You can’t be both a bad marking and tackling team inside 50 like we were last year and expect to win a flag.

We are in strong agreement that we need more marking power out of our talls, particularly Darcy and Jackson. Marks between the arcs are the key to transition footy and I don't think we have the spread speed in our smaller players to be that link instead.

I would like to see what happens if Brandon Walker blasts off to space, well away from his opponent, to be the spare on the fat side to take the mark and drive it forward.

Strictly as a set play.

Yes, we were 13th. We were also dead last for allowing the opposition tackles inside our back 50 (and then dead last for differential), so the issue gets compounded. Almost a statistical anomaly with how badly we did in the differential stat ... -5.0 when 17th was -3.4 and 16th was -2.4 (which were Richmond and North, absolute basket case teams).

Dunno how Jye didn’t have 4 shots at goal in th first half from free kicks alone. Never seen a bloke get chopped and hit high as much as he does for no calls. If he was umpired right we wouldn’t have a single problem with him at all

He’s had 7 games with 5 touches or less in the past year. I’m sure he gets the wrong end of the whistle sometimes but his invisible man impression is a regular occurrence.

Jye is just too one-dimensional atm. It's lead/mark or nothing. If we don't see him on the lead or can't get the ball to him, he's essentially a passenger.

He's got to find different strings to his bow and find other ways to contribute.
Which is frustrating because I remember being so impressed with how good he was at ground level with the ball in 2022. The fact he was still dangerous in the forward 50 once the ball spilled.

People don’t want to admit it but heaps of players have their best years in the first couple and never really get back there

Don’t know why people are petrified of dropping Amiss , that half a year at Peel was the making of Treacy , if he can’t come back a more rounded , better contested player after that he was never gonna make it anyway

needs to play with a bit of fire in the belly

It's not even that I'd say Amiss has been bad either, he's still one of our most consistent goal scorers over the past few years, I think we just all expected by now he'd have built his game more off the back of his 2023 season but it seems like he's stagnated from where we expected.

Voss didn't do much either

Amiss is a developing KPF, but had a disappointing season last year. Not a disastrous season, but a major issues was around what his role was looking like.

The preseason seemed to take on his role and specifically looked like they wanted to expand the area of the ground he worked in and get him more involved up on the wings.

The Geelong game seemed to have binned all of that.

If he (and Darcy) don't have greater impact Cox ruck/forward should come into play.

Are they training tomorrow?

I might have time for another Exclusive training report.

In that 2023 season he was a bit of an unknown. Very good on the lead and creating separation by jumping his opponent without body contact. Clubs went to work and decided they would try and stop that. Now he gets held/scragged/checked off the ball and this limits his effectiveness of getting open on the lead. It's quite obvious when you go to games and can look at what happens off the ball. It's borderline stuff to me, would be called as frees if his name was Daicos, but of course the umpires just let the defenders get away with it.

its been the case for years now, he needs to work out a way to get past this like other forwards can. very rarely do you ever see him on a lead with a clear bit of space on his opponent compared to other forwards. hes unfortunately at the moment ineffectual in majority of a game.

Maybe he can do what Jack Martin did and just throw his opponent to the ground while the ball is 80m away and then just lead straight up at the ball carrier and take an uncontested mark. Oh wait, no way we get away with that in a purple and white jumper.

I still remember when Collingwood got that goal in the drawn game from a pies player holding Amiss and him having high contact called from trying to break free 50 metres away from the ball.
