List Mgmt. 2026 - What do we need?

I am happy with any player that is either a small/medium forward or outside mid.

With McVee coming in, I don't think we need half back flank and our depth is very good in this area. I would like us to use all of our picks except 1 for backup ruck on outside mid, forward flanks or small forwards.

The question is how much of a drop off are you prepared to take, to fill a need. I think we saw in the year we need a 2nd KPF that reaching has its own risks.
I just think smaller players (not all of them) are generally more versatile.

There's defenders on our list I think we could try as outside mids or that could be the player we draft even if they're a HBF now.

I don't think a player that is an inside mid but has versatility to play elsewhere would be a useless addition either. We are replacing Fyfe this year and probably JOM next - Robinson might be one but who is the other?

Just no talls early on and ideally draft more versatile players unless they specifically meet one or two of our greatest needs.

Erasmus, Johnson plus Robinson is more than enough on the inside with Serong, Brayshaw and Young.

I would prefer to have players like Reid and Sam Cumming on our list, as they can play in the middle for periods but are also good going forward. I think this is where the AFL is going.

With 5 on the bench and no sub players likely to be the rules for 2026 I really think McVee could be a terrific addition if he can rotate wing/half back as he'll give us cover in two positions if we get an injury during the game to a defender or winger. He takes Banfield's role as the main multi positional option.

These players are handy depth but we should be improving their positions:
Banfield
Worner
Noddy
JOM
Dudley

I agree completely. Worner for example is perfect as the next defender in but you don't want him getting a game when everyone's available. Noddy and Dudley at their best would be very handy but both need big preseasons as they had disappointing finishes to the year.

Can you actually fit more than one of these into our best 23 if you were to name it?

Think players 10-16 improving will be what actually takes us to the next step.

It's easy to blame our worst players but we don't have the ten stars and 7-8 consistent players that the real top teams have.

You could name another 4-5 similar level players to that list you've made and tbh select any 4-5 of them, as long as the players can play the required role, and it'd make **** all difference to the team's performance.

I’ve always thought going ‘need a small forward’ or ‘desperately need a winger’ doesn’t ever really turn out. I’ve always thought the hole fill approach to list management was a bit off, you get unexpected growth or a new rookie and all of a sudden a that changes the dynamic of the side for that season.

I think the main issue is consistency and probably 20% improvement across the board, but also those bottom 5-6 players being thrown out.

Can we actually compete with the the handout clubs over the next 5 years?
If by compete you mean top 4 - yes
Win a flag - I have genuine doubts*

*Need to get everything right and atm there’s still massive questions over the coaching alone so I’m far from confident

I think everything has to go right but the alternative is we could just fold the club and go home?
Let's be honest the leg up to Sydney or GWS isn’t as strong atm.

There's only really two clubs that are getting that massive leg up atm.

It probably doesn't happen but if we can make top four (which we could) it's down to one or two games on the day. It's unlikely we win those games but a team has never gone winless in the AFL era which shows upsets do happen.

The problem is tho ,it’s those 2 clubs who are precisely who are likely to be our two biggest rivals moving forward over the next few years in terms of winning a flag.

There “leg ups” which is putting it mildly btw will be massive and have long lasting effects on their flag chances for the next 5+ years - basically our entire window.

Understand that but it's reasonably probable we only need to beat them once or twice in finals.

Home and away doesn't matter who we beat only that we win enough games.

They'll be other opportunities for other clubs to win flags in that period. We'll probably only get one opportunity at best IMO so we'll need to make it count when it comes.

Our other window was when Hawthorn was dominant and we didn't have the game plan that could beat them.

The WA clubs and the commission should be arguing with the AFL to give the clubs a bigger soft cap salary.
No way someone from the Eastern States is going to move his family here unless the pay is better than average.
So it’s either former WA players or we are poaching from each other for staff.
Unless we do what Simpson did with Mitchell? Which would work for us too if we could
get Neale for a year then coach?
Neale would be a mountain of information, and as an assistant later would be a huge gain.
Otherwise a senior coaching director could be the difference, but we are not going to compete on talent alone. It has to be off field at first.
Then longer term the development of our U18’s programs, NGA has to be addressed or
fixed. Best thing to happen here is the Bears.
Let’s hope they can start with a bang and we can get some AFL handouts.

Don't mind the Neale player/coach idea.

He's always seemed like he has a good footy brain on him and the vision of him on the bench in the GF was positive.

Maybe.

They were also loaded with talent.

Hodge, Mitchell, Lewis Rioli, Roughead, Franklin? Everyone one is going to be a hall of famer Plus Birchall etc

Not sure why people would be against Neale coming back.

Still got a bit to offer on field. Off field would be invaluable.

Think about what happened with the hawks players going to other clubs. Mitchell to Eagles - flag, Hodge to Brisbane - eventual flags, Lewis to Melbourne - eventual flag..

Last time facism was on the rise and everything went to s*** overseas, the competitions were heavily compromised. Team better win one real soon is all I can say.
