Not a single one of these proposed 20th club locations is without massive logistic, marketability or economic barriers. Forget it.
I disagree....

There's a few certain areas for a 20th side.

1. Canberra. It makes sense. They already have an AFL standard ground in Manuka oval. The only issue is they might have to rely on recruiting Victorians.

2. A 3rd WA club. The population and money is there. Your not touching the south of the Swan River as it's Fremantle's zone. In the WAFL, east Freo, south Freo and peel thunder have strong links to the dockers . Peel thunder is dockers ressies side.

So that means Perth. Specifically, north Perth or East Perth. Get local talent from Perth demons, East Perth and Swan districts.

3. A 3rd SA club. People say Norwood. That's only the Eastern suburbs.

I could say Northern suburbs. Gather that talent in the SANFL in North Adelaide and central's.

But I say southern suburbs. You got Sturt, Glenelg and south Adelaide. Training could be at Glenelg oval or sturts Unley oval. Southern suburbs of Adelaide such as Glenelg, Somerton park, Brighton and Marion are good places to live.

I like how you said hundreds and not thousands.
North Melbourne owns your team's a** mate LoL.

Sink the boots on north Melbourne fans all you want. They saved the AFL from being broke lol.

Their fan base have survived 2 world wars, the Korean war, the Vietnam war, 2 American invasions of Iraq when Saddam Hussein was president and the corona virus 🦠 lol

I still cannot for the life of me understand why a 20th team is in dicussion.

Let's get one good 19th team in place, performing well, and let the ripples around the competition die down before we add #20, please. For the love of god, did we learn nothing from the debacle that was the launch of Gold Coast and GWS?
Nope lol

I guess you don't know why Gold coast and GWS came in.

One game in NSW and Queensland every round

Canberra would be awesome but won’t happen more because of stadium issues. ACT Govt can barely afford the tram let alone a stadium build on top, GIO is falling apart with no solution in sight, the Kingston NIMBY brigade riot at any suggestion of upgrading Manuka and there’s nowhere else suitable on the Canberra side of the border.

Give it to Canberra and GWS will never become established. They need to be the official second team for NSW.

I'm so bloody sick of this angle. F**k GWS (I mean that in the nicest way possible, I appreciate what they've done for the capital).

But f**k 'em. Tasmania didn't have to worry about North and Hawthorn's losses (which are much bigger financially and with more members), why should we have to for GWS?

Also, your point is entirely wrong anyway. "Give it to Canberra and GWS will never become established". The exact opposite is true. Keep GWS in Canberra and they'll never become established in Western Sydney.

GWS can be the official second team for NSW, but we are not NSW.

The only way we got anywhere with the afl was when we started to threaten to withdraw all our fifo funding I imagine the act government would need to do the same

The reality is most of the comp is wholly dependent on the AFL. It is one Ross Oakley away from having six Vic clubs, two northern and no Tassie. Heck even Freo and Port could find themselves on the chopping block. Wouldn't happen but if an accountant ran the comp these sorts of things would be considered.

The business case for a town hosting non local teams is generally strong. You can argue the numbers but there's a reason why these deals get up.

Till this day Brisbane and Sydney are in the bread queue. GWS and GC may never be self sufficient.

I'm not saying it's impossible, but to take on another welfare based club, squeeze its neighbour and forgo the chance to have a team in every state / territory feels like a long shot.

Merge a couple of Melbourne clubs and keep it at 18.

Even at that number it's a lot of teams for a country this size.
Want to be the bearer in telling us what Victorian clubs should be merged then :$

WA3 only makes sense if it was Bunbury-based as a large regional club and even then, it barely makes sense. There is absolutely zero logic in a third metro side.

Canberra makes a lot of sense.
I've read on Bigfooty multiple times that ~30 years ago Fitzroy was in talks to relocate games in some way to Canberra. Could we come full circle and have a team playing out of Canberra with links to the Roys?

I very much doubt it. The AFL would never allow it.

There''s not much difference between a Canberra team having links to Fitzroy than a Brisbane team having links to Fitzroy.

Country’s at near 26mill and with Fed governments loving population growth… Australia will be at 30mill… then 35mill, etc

Going forward population won’t be a problem

I can’t for the life of me understand how they run a 19 team comp.

A bye for one team in round 1!

Then who gets the bye from rounds 19 onwards? Or does the AFL sacrifice revenue and reduce it to an 18 game season?

Team 19 is happening … so team 20 now is a necessity… or the comp is cooked

And there is no way the Kangas or Saints supporters will agree to a merger or relocation

And there is no way the AFL fold the Suns with the money they’ve already poured into it … and the burgeoning junior participation numbers they are now getting in QLD.

Then move to a 20 round fixture (including derby/rivalry round) and a 10 team finals series like McGuire touted a few years back

The draw is then much more equitable. And the AFL doesn’t cop a revenue hit like they would from running a 19 team comp
