Is this the quote you were referencing/after?

Bleijie confirmed the stadium’s planned 63,000 capacity could increase slightly if it could be achieved within the existing $3.8 billion budget.

“If we can squeeze more out of the budget, add a few more seats, make it happen - but the budget’s not changing.”

IF being the key word, as seldom do these strcutures fall within budget, but we can hope for the Queensland taxpayers it does.

Wait who is paying for Sunshine Coast and Cairns?
I'd imagine one or several levels of government (probably mostly state) would. That's generally how it works.

I would start off by building a small 10k stadium on the Sunny Coast and have the Lions play one away game there every year against a team that's willing to sell a home game like North. The Roos get some extra cash, Brisbane travel less and momentum starts building in the Sunshine Coast.

Once they regularly sell out the 10k stadium on the Sunshine Coast, a stadium upgrade to 20-25k can be investigated as well as a new AFL team that can play home games there. As for Cairns, they already have a 10k stadium so it just needs to double in capacity once the demand is clearly there, but I doubt it will house an AFL team any time soon.

Just to clarify, you want a Sunshine Coast team as well as a northern Brisbane team, or instead of?

AFL Canberra can’t organise a proper VFL team. How they going to go in the big league? Weather is bad thru winter. Player retention. I actually hope it is Canberra as played allot of footy in actafl. Cannot see it though.

The NEAFL team really isn't an apt example.

The Canberra Demons were just a local club (not even our biggest), that was the last standing club after the AFL tried to force a partnership.

It's nothing like an AFL team of our own would be.

Weather is bad thru winter.

Is it?

Yeah, it's cold, but our winters are dry and still.

If you want to guarantee a June game played without rain, wind or clouds, then Canberra is the safest bet in the southern states.

Just be smart and make them the 1pm games.

Player retention.

The ACT/SNSW has roughly 40 current players in the AFL.

Canberra would become the closest team for the majority of these players.

So many players from the Riverina would love an option in daytrip territory from their friends and family.

Yeah it has to be one or the other, and if they go big with the stadium, I’d go with the Sunshine Coast.

Needs to be super easy to get there from Brisbane though so they’ll have an easier time selling out. As a team 21/22.

Cairns I’d love to see but won’t. There has to be a lot more growth and better connectivity to Townsville and Mackay to draw enough crowds.

That’s at least 50 years away. If they did go to 23-24, I’d have them in the equation.

QLD is looking better for expansion than NSW at this point.

I bet you weren’t worried about tax payers when the SFS, Parra, Penrith etc etc etc were all rebuilt.
Your thoughts on tax payers with the PNG and Perth rectangle stadium rebuild?

The best Olympic Stadium we can build to promote Australia at the Olympics and later showcase the Australian indigenous game.
it's going to be crazy that Brisbane in will move in front of Adelaide and Perth in showcasing the Australian indigenous game.
Will that be enough to move Qld3 in front of Pth3, Canberra, NT, Ade3, NSW3 and Auc ?

I can see it.

But personally would hope ACT1 is ahead of it. Thought Perth 3 would be as well but more knowledgeable people than me out there think it would work so who knows

I try to keep an open mind and can see all the proponent arguments as having merit however
I would rule out NT as too difficult and demanding. Nobody is selling the details of Pth3. i don't see any negatives with Canberra AFL and good positives. I would see Qld3 as a dark horse with a great upside but probably premature.

I just can’t see a world in which a second Brisbane team is a front runner for the 20th team (it should barely even be in the conversation).

Such an increase of capacity happening at the same time pretty much precludes Brisbane. It’d be one hell of a risk doing both at the same time.

Canberra and Perth3 are really the only viable options in the timeframe of a 20th team. The NT is a real long shot if they manage to secure an absolutely stupendous government deal.

Bris2 would be a solid candidate for the 21/22 round of expansion though.

You know I agree with Canberra, and a swift name change to Western Sydney Giants, but everyone on here from WA seems to think that a 3rd team wouldnt work.

As for after team 20 can see Qld and Newcastle. But take the time to prep. One of the oldest sports clubs in NSW is Newcastle City.

For me it has to be Canberra, but I get the feeling there is an undercurrent at AFL house that doesn't want them in, but i hope I'm wrong.

Yeah I think a third Perth team is overhyped.

There’s a small push from the Southwest, but doesn’t seem to really be one from Perth.

To me, a third Perth team doesn’t really add much. If anything, I think it waters down the strong two-team town that Perth currently has.

But I think Perth is a good option, if there are no other options to help even things up. But a waste when Canberra exists.

I don’t get that vibe from the current administration.

Dillon has referenced Canberra when speaking of a 20th team and even flew incognito to a game here supposedly to speak with Barr after the article came out about Canberra’s intentions.

I got that vibe more from the Gil days, but that was also when a 20th team wasn’t likely, so it’s not surprising that he was trying to keep us tied to the Giants.

You think the increase in capacity dilutes the product. IMO it's the opposite.
IMO it's a tsunami of opportunity.
If everywhere you look there is Australia's indigenous game and quality high capacity stadiums as options
then a Queenslander cannot help but be impressed.
there are many elements in the potential success of a new team and a home stadium does generate excitement.
Pth3 could be playing a lot of their games at an old stadium.
A big stadium decision for Canberra would be a huge boost for their cause.

I wonder if any upgrades to the Manuka Oval for a AFL team have to tie in with upgrades to the GIO stadium as regards government money, and Andrew Barr has been putting off upgrades to the GIO ground for quite while, and also is there pressure to extend the contract of GWS playing there? Just saying.

LOL Canberra Stadium is a much better facility than Manuka, got all the funding. They are literally planning on a brand new stadium for the Raiders and Brumbies.

We can only hope there is no extension.

Upgrade Manuka. Lol

I think it's just basic supply and demand.

The Lions are increasing their capacity by about 80%.

The Lions are doing well, but there’s no guarantee they’ll be filling that.

I get wanting to build on the momentum, but you want demand to be so pent up that a second Brisbane team is the only option to get into the game. You’re setting the second team up for failure by doing it at the same time the demand is reduced.

It could pay off, but there’s also a real chance you’ll have Bris2 with sub-10k crowds in a 63k stadium.

To me, it just doesn’t make sense to do both at the same time. It’s better having the Lions built up to be the West Coast of Brisbane.

everyone on here from WA seems to think that a 3rd team wouldnt work.

The real issue with Pth3 is that there has been no explanation as to the specifics or even the basics.
Put simply - there's a lack of talk about another Perth AFL side a.t.m.

Think Brisbane.2 think GWS Sydney.
It takes a long long time and a lot of money to get anywhere near autarky

especially when you have a board and the AFL working against the club and all the hard work of our community and grassroots workers. Before we get to our team itself.

As an aside though we balance out well with the Sydney NRL sides. Yet shit compared to AFL. Will get there.
