That's why albo is pouring tens of millions of taxpayer dollars into setting up development academies there. They already produce a few players, it should be a production line with the money old mate is throwing at it. If an AFL club had the same money being thrown at their nga's it would become a footy factory for clubs.

I'm not saying it will happen, just saying that's the risk. It's a third world country, PNGians generally aren't big people and AFAIK it doesn't have a big islander population. Even development money doesn't guarantee a team of NRL-ready players. You would only need a couple of serious security incidents for players to pull the pin and if you have to pay 2x or 3x market rate to get players over there then you can probably see how the team might be uncompetitive.

So far it is $5.5m for player development. Half of the has probably gone into some currupt officials’ pocket.

And it is not $60m per year for a new club. $60m would be the total aid budget for sport and socio-economic programs. Some articles suggest $100m over 10 tears for the team. That won’t be nearly enough.

There were so many articles that say a 600 mil pledge from the Australia government for the new nrl team. So I am just Google linking instead of copying one article, as there are heaps that say it.

Also considering an AFL team requires 40 mil per year and AFL teams require nearly double the running costs of an nrl team, I'd say 60 million is a huge amount of money, even if the team was based in Equatorial Guinea, it would more than survive off that financial outlay.

That is just lazy journalism from sport writers not understanding how it might work.

Nothing has been announced by Albo or the government. It would not be a vote winner. RL fans would rather other bids in Australia get 18th licence, and those who don’t follow RL would clealry see this as a waste of time and money.

This is quite a balanced article.

I think that the next NRL club will be in Queensland whether they be a Cairns based team or Brisbane 3 i wouldn't know, but it will be in Queensland.

Sigh...despite having 2 emerging and existing markets already, the Giants wants both in the US.

What did the post say it’s no longer available according to Facebook.

Regarding the US market, there was talk pre-COVID era that Essendon and GWS in particular were keen to host a match over there so will be interesting if the AFL decides to copy from the NRL now, as per usually with their administration lately.

Update from the previous post, found this floating on the internet, maybe this is what your quoting neogh so give you full credit for this news:

GWS has reignited its desire to play a home and away game in the USA, with the club sending a staffer to scope out potential venues last year.

While the AFL is not yet directly involved with any plans, the Giants have long been keen on becoming the first club to play for premiership points in the USA.

The plans before COVID were for GWS to host Essendon in either San Francisco or Los Angeles, but they were put on the backburner due to the pandemic.

The Bombers told 9News Melbourne they are not involved in any discussions with GWS to play a game in the USA.

Four years ago, former Dons CEO Xavier Campbell told a function it was on the club's radar and Kevin Sheedy - with his links to both clubs - was also involved.

But the Giants, who already have a strong presence in the USA via key financial backers, are keen to explore what a game on the country's west coast would look like.

Aiding their ambition is the AFL's split Round 1 fixture in 2024. Theoretically, GWS could play an opponent in 'Opening Round' and be home in time to play again in Round 2.

Direct flights from Sydney to Los Angeles and San Francisco are direct and under 14 hours.

The match would be played at a cricket stadium. More than 10 have been built in the USA in recent years by the ICC as the game grows in the region.

This year the T20 Men's World Cup will be co-hosted by the USA and West Indies.

GWS is also keen to strengthen its local support and was delighted to be awarded with several home Saturday twilight fixtures in 2024, plus a blockbuster against Carlton in school holidays and an Anzac Day night match in Canberra.

AFL games for premiership points have previously been played in New Zealand and China and this year the NRL will venture to the USA to play four home and away games in Las Vegas.

Surely it can’t be when they they have the contract with 3 games in ACT until 2032?

I meant more financially. The "they need Canberra" argument will mean even less when they have another source of income.

Still can't see them only playing seven home games a year though. Would be brutal for Giants fans.

GWS need to concentrate their efforts on the home market not the US.

"But the Giants already have a strong presence in the USA" 🤣
Dude they haven't even got a presence in Western Sydney despite the the 100 of millions of dollars that have been spent on them

Did you deliberately cut the sentence short?

"who already have a strong presence in the USA via key financial backers"

There is a group of rich Giants supporters, with a contingent in the US, who would play a large part funding this. They're the same group who also pay for the naming rights for Giants Stadium.

And the GWS presence in Western Sydney is?

Well, if they play the San Francisco Giants, I think it'd be a resounding success. I've never seen a baseball-AFL crossover match before, it should be chaos of the best kind.
Come to think of it, San Fran should be the obvious location for a game involving a club called the Giants who have an orange kit.

wouldn't suprise me san fran and people who support the giants love any giants team. I heard about it, they love them over there

Legend has it that GWS will be rebranded as the Greater United States Of America and will play all their home matches in the US while their training base still will be located in Western Sydney ;)

For real though, makes me wonder with this “Opening Round” concept being formed that we possibly see more teams being created in the East Coast states if they want to go beyond 20 clubs, even if that’s a horrible idea short-term IMO, and will play those matches in USA, if the numbers don’t stick up initially.

I've always said if the AFL goes beyond 20 teams, it'll be because they want more teams in NSW and QLD. I doubt they give a rats ass about a WA3 or a SA3.

I’m not going to give much commentary on this, but using this QLD planning document on the growth of SEQ, three AFL teams could try and base themselves each with a focus on two Local Government areas. I drew in the LG locations using green, and linked the relevant two LG’s with blue, red and pink.

I’m not saying there should be three SEQ AFL teams, but this could be a way to try and make it work with different identities. Essentially, south (Gold Coast and Logan), central (Brisbane and Ipswich) and north (new team for Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay, though this would result in the lowest population).
