as I said I've done plenty of research and logically and in many other points Rams is the best option, I don't think keeping the Rams name for the women's team will be an issue no local women's teams haven't changed anything either its because they want to keep a streamlined brand in this scenario its good but with the VFL it wasn't killing the Casey scorpions and box hill mustangs brands to align with their AFL affiliates

A gender neutral name is about making sure a new AFLW team isn't just an afterthought. The Lions have had their name since 1957, they most definitely weren't thinking of a women's team back. Tasmania and Team 20 will be the first teams with brands created with the AFLW in mind. Canberra really gets behind women's sport. I wouldn't be surprised if they had the highest proportion of their fanbase engaged with the women's team.

The Lions and Rams also aren't exactly comparable. The lion is the species, lionesses are still lions, so it's not wrong to have a female lion. And while the Lionesses are a nickname, they're still officially the Lions. There are no female rams. You could call the women's team the Ewes or Sheep, but they're both terrible.

It gives the benefit of promoting the team in Canberra as an only Canberra team, but promoting the team in snsw as the rams representing their area.

In Tassie there are three main regions, each with their own footy comps and histories - South, North and North West. The South has about 55% of the population (heavily centred on Hobart). North and NW the remaining 45%. Launnie is the biggest city there, but the population in the north of the state is more decentralised.

There’s a strong tradition of regional representative football between these three regions. In the photo, the South guernsey is blue and gold, N black and white, NW gold and maroon. If Tassie ever had the population to justify two teams (it never will, which is why BigChippa52 is absolutely right), I reckon it would make sense to have one team called ‘Hobart’ to rep the South and another, ‘Northern Tasmania’ based in Launceston and also playing some games on the NW coast to rep the other two regions.

The TSL is being scrapped after this year and all state league clubs are going back into regional comps. This will create a vacuum for the state’s best players. Therefore, I would like to see the AFL club (Devils), underpinned by two VFL clubs. An AFL-aligned club based out of Hobart and a non-aligned club based at Utas Stadium in Launceston.

It's a really cool concept, but yes, I don't think there'll ever be two teams in Tasmania.

The next three after Tassie should come from ACT-Riverina, WA3, and Brisbane 2-Sunshine Coast.

If I was going to add another two teams after that, I'd be looking at New Zealand and Sydney 3-Newcastle, two largest untapped populations left to tap into. Newcastle on their own is probably risky but a 3 game membership partnership with the northern area of Sydney could work.

There'll be popular demand for SA3 if WA3 ever gets in just because it's a footy state, but if population growth matters, then I don't see it being as viable as some say.

I'm not saying the Rams isn't a clever name that ticks most of the boxes, but the one box it doesn't tick could leave a sour taste in the mouth.

I think you and I disagree on the importance of AFLW. Especially in a market like Canberra. I expect the AFLW to grow and become an increasingly important part of each club. I'd say the AFL wants the same so would probably veto a name like the Rams.

Personally, I actually see Canberra's AFLW team entering early as a soft launch, growing the brand and fandom before Manuka is big enough for a men's team.

I was trying to play around with other potential acronyms. If anybody can make a mascot out of Rascals, that's the best word I could make fit (Riverina, ACT, South Coast, Albury).

Obviously, I'd still support the Canberra Rams, but it'd be well down the list of my preferred options.
