I'd like to limit the competition to 20 teams if possible. There needs to be a possibility of winning a couple of flags in someone's lifetime or the whole reason to support a team becomes difficult to continue.

Team 20 - Canberra
Relocate 2 or 3 Victorian teams after that to Newcastle, Sunshine Coast and NT/NQ.

Hint North, Saints and Melbourne. Unless Melbourne merge with another Victorian team like Hawks.

It's beyond hilarious to think 8 Giants games in Western Sydney is enough to get growth..

Incidental promotion seems to have evaporated
Initially there was an International Cup shared at Blacktown ISP.
It then got moved to Queensland and then it was replaced by a regional Pacific Cup.
We need some promotions out of left field like a S.O.O.
or an international AFLW test against an Irish side..

Post AFL GF there's been nothing, aside from John Longmire stepping down for the Swans it's been incredibly quiet.

Whilst the present attitude remains - that is every team is a loser except the premier, then 20 teams needs something to create interest like conferences.

They have been non stop in the media, I can see why it's been a struggle for footy, particularly in the western suburbs.

They would be near non existent in the Melbourne media.....and I am guessing the prospective NRL club in Perth would even be getting less coverage than Harley Reid's coffee preferences

Not denying that presence in Sydney is a priority challenge for the AFL to address, but the challenge is the same for all non culturally dominant sports everywhere on the planet.

The post season NRL games rate lower than NRL games.....and that's the ones with Austalia in it. The trade period is massive in AFL world.

It is probably wasted resources splashing money trying to keep the AFL in the news in Sydney in November. Better to go hard in late Feb

I still think GWS should have been the Canberra Giants from the start. I think at some point it will still happen.

They should be trying to completely dominate the ACT/Riverina areas. People in WS will never care.

Not so long ago Dave Matthews who's the GWS CEO says its harder now than ever for GWS in West Sydney.
The Swans had the benefit of the Rugby League Super League war. GWS won't have that luxury

And the fact the AFL can't make any club relocate. Any attempt to force a club to relocate against its will will result in a protracted legal battle.

The league has a legal duty to its incumbent clubs to look after their interests to a significant extent.

If, for example, the AFL cuts North's funding to force an expulsion / relocation, that will be legally challenged - especially if the same rules aren't then applied to other clubs like the Western Bulldogs, Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast, and GWS.

A couple of short neutral pieces about Cook.
There was no emotion - no NRL boost to W.A.talk , no NRL evasion talk and not what could be done with a spare b%500 million.to the health and housing crisi.

Not denying that presence in Sydney is a priority challenge for the AFL to address, but the challenge is the same for all non culturally dominant sports everywhere on the planet.

The dominant sports get the major coverage no question about that
but some news services are open to special interest stories.
and I cannot think of anywhere is so hostile to a sport as Sydney is.
Even the Irish aren't totally hostile to AFL considering all the poaching.

You don't have to splash money to create news.
All you have to do is talk things up.
It wouldn't cost the AFL to mention, possibility of 20th AFL renewal of International Rules. an AFLW test series against Ireland, possibility of S.O.O., an indigenous series, China, ASFLX ....anything

The AFL cannot relocate or merge any AFL club it does not own without that club's consent. Other clubs cannot force any other club to relocate against their will.

The AFL's constitution says in Clause 24:

"The Commission may grant an entity the status of a Club and the right to representation on AFL and may:

a) relocate the playing, administration and social base of a Club
b) recognise implement and adopt the merger of two or more Clubs

with the consent of the Club or Clubs involved."

Clause 27 says that any Commission decision (including the termination of a club's licence) may be reversed by two thirds of the 18 Appointees (Clubs) at a general meeting of the AFL requisitioned by three Appointees (Clubs) within 14 days of the Commission decision.

So all the AFL can do is withdraw a licence.

Ah, so you're saying that's it's easier for Pth3 to steal existing fans than Canberra to create new fans.
No, you're saying Pth3 will jump on the new generation of football fans - that's the exact same logic
of all developmental regions.

Perth will grow in population more than Canberra will have population in the next 10 years. The market is under catered, it needs attention and adding the 20th team is the time. Wait longer and NRL will get those numbers. TV revenue is only half the income of the AFL and WA3 will end up ahead of Brisbane and Sydney in terms of attendance in a short time period, let alone the bottom of the competition.

I do agree with the statement that we should be capped at 20 teams, but maybe try and merge 2 Melbourne ones when a Canberra team is introduced. Have a long lead time and pathway to the merger over a 5-10 year period. Bottom 2 on well known, public metrics over a long period are compelled to merged to become a bigger team if the fans don't all leave and accept it.

By the AFL. Hopefully some of the smaller Melbourne teams could figure out it would be better than playing 2-3 games away every year and constantly struggling financially. If the supporters liked the idea and support it, maybe they end up the 5th biggest club in Melbourne.

I just think it is an option that hasn't been tried compared to relocation.

The 5th biggest club in Melbourne has been selling games interstate for almost 25 years and nobody bats an eyelid.
