A sure fire way to gauge interest and marketability is the amount of comps and end of the line AFL players produced (was one of the arguments for Tassie given their contributions to the sport).
Gold Coast is improving in this regard but the NT is an absolute powerhouse when it comes to this rivalling all states. Talent is extraordinary and has absolutely contributed to the sport.
Further with the new streaming deal for fox and the likelihood of free to air for sport been dead in the water by the time team 20 arrives the AFL will need to.appeal to international viewers similar to soccer and basketball.
The NT achieves this. Especially the talent if you establish an academy similar to the gc.
Too good an opportunity to.pass up.

Through being uniquely Australian. The NT produces the most talent per capita. Having an unbelievably talented side playing in an ironically Australian spot Australia's national game would drive international interest by showcasing both at once. The tourism sponsorship opportunities and reach internationally would be phenomenal.
When foreginers think of Australia they think harbour Bridge kangaroos and the outback and crocodiles. Having all this on show with an entertaining product generates opportunity.

Whilst I agree it would be cool to see a team made up of mostly aboriginals, the n.t is producing barely no talent these days, despite their being the thunder, Eddie Betts academy and various programs. That's before we even start on the tiny population, financial losses the team would incur and the weather and travel issues.
Funnily enough, the biggest footy factories in the country per capita now are, the Riverina NSW and the Gold Coast QLD.
AFL and fans love even numbers, but an odd number of teams actually gives more flexibility in fixturing.
The 20th team would need to be heavier supported by the AFL like the Giants and Suns. All the key markets have a team except Tasmania who will get a team. Any team would have a low supporter base.
You could have a season of 23 games within 25 weeks like what we already have.
No team having a less than a 7-day break which is great for Player welfare.
More Monday, Thursday nights and more games on public holidays. ANZAC day could have three games, King's birthday 2 games, and other public holidays such as having a WA Derby on WA Day at 5:00pm which would be 7:00pm in Victoria.
Bye rounds having a third of the teams is horrible and the season loses traction in those rounds. Having 1 or 3 teams having a bye each round gives enough content to not lose talking points.

You cannot be uniquely Australian and uniquely N.T. - it's one or the other.

There is Australian football, aboriginal players and features from ALL around Australia
yet, to my my knowledge no media company has AFL promoted prominently.
How and why would they be different than they are now ?
Well Uluru and Kakadu are promoted as well and how is that working ?

Yes, i agree that that Tourism Australia has to update the cliche's of Uluru, Kakadu, Habour Bridge and Opera House with new vibrant locations. I can suggest Ningaloo, Karajimi, the Great Southern and Esperance just in W.A. or the whole of Tasmania as starters. It'll be interesting to see how much boost Tasmania receives.
Which is all the more reason Canberra should be team 20 and not WA3 or NT.
Talent per capita is arguably more important than support per.
The 20th team needs to be competitive and I’d imagine a Canberra side would be more so than another Perth side because of the Riverina pool of players they could have first dibs on.
Especially when they are not represented with any team.

What are you on about?
The ACT has been the fastest growing state or territory for the past two censuses, and that's likely to be continued for a third.
We're also building dwellings so quickly that our house prices are expected to grow the least in 2025.
Canberra will continue to grow quicker than Darwin and our case will only grow stronger.
You can argue the case for the NT based on the feel-good element. But its strength is definitely not demogphics and population growth. It's not even a point worth you bringing up.

The NT may offer a "whole new lifestyle", but at the end of the day, Darwin's population still isn't growing at the rate of Canberra. Greater Canberra is four times the size of Darwin, and that gap will grow.

It's not a case of culture v bureaucracy; passion v numbers.
You need both.
Port Lincoln and Kalgoorlie, they've both got great passion for footy, but you wouldn't put teams there, would you? Of course not, because they're both ridiculously small. The numbers don't make sense.
The NT has better numbers than those, but still not enough.
Canberra doesn't have the same level of footy culture as the NT, but we're not devoid of culture either. And we have the numbers.
Passion and culture is great, but it doesn't work without the numbers. You need the yin and the yang. The culture and the numbers.

Well there was a push for a Kalgoorlie WAFL team and there was good logic behind it
but it was never going to happen as Subiaco would lose their famous recruiting zone.

Exactly. Neither are suitable for an AFL team because demographics matter.
Obviously Darwin is demographically stronger than either, but still much weaker than Canberra or a third Perth team.
