Just hope he can cluck it and knows where the goals are in addition to rucking. If he can do that then he will prove to be a bargain.

Also, as frustrating as Tyson was, he was the immediate replacement when one of our gun mids got injured. He was like our 6th man off the bench who could come straight in and not look out of place in the middle. Who is that guy now? I think with Kent, Tyson, Bugg etc leaving, our depth which was looking decent, has now vanished and looks like being replaced with what? VFL players or players who've been rejected by multiple clubs? Like i said, as frustrating as Tyson was, we should have done more to keep him IMO.
I definitely think we're still very well stocked in this department: Oliver/Viney/Brayshaw starting every centre bounce is as good as you'll find in the league. Harmes too when he's tagging, but he's a fair way behind these three when it comes to pure clearance winning. Jones, Vanders and Trac also capable of rotating through, Problem we have in losing Tyson is that JKH and Maynard are the only players really capable of covering them from the reserves. Have been calling for us to draft some young inside depth for years, because we really don't have any young guys breaking through. Wanted Charlie Constable last year, though obviously Spargo and Fritsch look like the right picks in hindsight! Hopefully there's a couple of ready made prospects this year that slide a bit.

Preuss, Harmes, Oliver, Viney as a centre square set will make opponents crap themselves.
Eh, good midfields just get the job done and don't worry about chest-thumping. Happy to have Preuss, but he's played eight games of AFL footy. Do we actually know if he's any good?

yeah Max Gawn said Preuss is a good ruckman. the problem is Max also said Lachie Filipovic showed a lot of promise too, so i'm not sure how good a judge he really is.

If his tank is his biggest problem, the best place for him to be is chasing Max around the training track.

Has anyone taken the time to look at our procession of gun ruckmen the last 30 years or so? (it might go longer, but I'm 34, so ...)

Starting with Stynes, into White, into Jamar, into Max, with Preuss now the heir apparent ... All of them All Australians, its a remarkable run. Also special mention to Darren Jolly who left for more opportunity and won a couple of premierships.
Seems a lot here are quite young and may not remember but one of my favourite parts of the Jeff White era was just after Jolly left and we had Jamar in the team for no other reason than to spend about 8 minutes a quarter adding nothing to the team other than just running directly through the opposing starting ruck to soften them up so Whitey could spend the rest of the time jumping over their corked/bruised bodies. Guessing we'll give that a whirl again with Maxy doing some of his Scott Wynd work in defense and some time floating forward. Still think we'll trade Hogan to Freo because, **** they'll look stupid if they don't come to the table. That'll give more space for Maxy to do his thing in front of forward 50 packs.

Gawn was meant to go early in his draft year though, just didn't bc of injuries and work rate concern. His talent was evident though.

Also Leuenburger, McEvoy, Ryder, Longer, and Boyd were all top 10 picks.
And all were traded.
It's a waste of a pick almost all the time to go early on a ruck

But Maynard and JKH don't have to come in...

When Brayshaw Oliver and Viney are at a bounce that means Jones Petracca annd AVB are on a wing or forward so if they go into the middle then we don't bring in another inside mid, we bring in someone to play wing or HFF.

However I would like us to draft a young inside mid aswell.

A few clubs have made great choices bringing in rucks who have developed early on at other clubs. I was somewhat surprised we didn’t look at a mature age ruck even as a rookie last year.

Leuenberger was a FA and the rest were traded for first round picks except Longer bc Brisbane got screwed on all trades that year. I'd say most rucks taken early in the last decade or two have turned out pretty well actually, more than haven't

Right they were traded when they were ready to play thus clubs wasted years of development on them.

How many top 30 rucks in the last 30 years have played the majority of their careers at one club.

Not many.

That’s because they’re tall. They can see further than other footballers so constantly tempted by new horizons. Which is also why when Kent decides to set forth and explore the world he gets as far as Morrabin then packs it in and has a sausage roll.

Top 30 rucks is like every ruck in the comp.

I agree. I also think Spargo has the potential to go in the middle and be the second touch distributor. He tackles well, keeps his width and is a neat kick.

Well you either draft them and hope they stay, or you get ready to throw a high draft pick and serious cash at a developed ruck at some stage. Either way you're usually giving up a lot to get a good one in unless you get lucky (like we did with Gawn)

Premiership rucks of the last 10 premiers
Lycett and Vardy
Nankervis
Roughead
McEvoy/Hale x3
Pike
Ottens x2
Jolly

All were traded in, none were especially expensive and the ones that were were traded immediately into the side thus avoiding wasted development years.

I'm confused how you are trying to argue against this

I'm not joining your arguement ... but Lycett, Roughead and Pike weren't traded in to their respective premiership teams.

Lycett, Roughead, and Pike weren’t traded in. McEvoy, Ottens, and Jolly were all traded for one first rounder and more. Hale traded for a pick at the end of the first round. Literally only Nank meets your criteria.

I’m not arguing with you, you’ll just never be able to get away with making stuff up while I’m around ;)

Can we please drop Roughead out of the equation. The guy was his team's Elle Macpherson in the ruck.

For a second I thought you were insulting Legally Blonde's Elle Wood, and I saw red. But yes, Roughead is a tremendous spud. What a disgrace that the Dogs won the clearances and inside 50s that day

I don’t particularly rate leg speed. In fact, it’s massively over rated and is annoying to hear people constantly banging on about it. I much prefer foot kicking. Quick, precise ball movement by kicking trumps everything else in our game.

What the hell are you banging on about, stretch mother ******* Armstrong, I hear you ask?

I don’t mind this Preuss pickup. It kind of makes sense to have at least one backup for every position on a list of 40+. But apparently he’s been given an assurance of playing, otherwise why TF would he come to the club with the best ruckman in the game, reportedly on a 4 year deal no less?

I predict that at least half the learned posters in here enjoying this pickup will be screaming either for this guy’s or for Goodwin’s scalp three rounds in to 2019 over a lack of <vomit> leg speed.

Seriously, how the **** are we fitting in all these talls? May? Lever returning? Hogan staying? Genuinely confused.
