2008 Rookie Draft. Selected number 47 overall and Hawthorn's 3rd choice.

Date of Birth: 11.11.90

From HFC website "Hawks take best available" 16.12.08

Selection No. 47. Luke Breust
Temora, NSW, medium forward, 11 November, 1990, 181cm, 74kg.

Luke probably surprised many because Sydney could have pre-listed him as a rookie but chose not to. Luke was one of the NSW-ACT’s better players this year in the national championships. We were delighted that Sydney didn’t pre-list him. He is a half-forward/wingman and also kicks the ball really well. He has a good goal sense as well.

AFL (NSW/ACT) CONGRATULATES LUKE BREUST

AFL (NSW/ACT) would like to congratulate former NSW/ACT RAMs player, Luke Breust after he was announced as the Temora Shire Young Citizen of the Year earlier this week.

The award caps off a brilliant year for the talented young sportsman, who was recently signed as a rookie with the Hawthorn Football Club.

Breust has been a strong performer with the AFL (NSW/ACT) Talented Player Program over the last few years and in 2008 was recognised for his efforts when he took out the award for the NSW/ACT Player of the Carnival for the 2008 National Championships.

The local resident who nominated Luke said, "he always conducts himself with sportsmanship and respect for his team mates".

Please join us in congratulating Luke on a fantastic achievement.

List assessment: Hawthorn
By Chris Fagan
Luke Breust
Started the year in Box Hill reserves. Through good hard training and form he pushed his way into the senior VFL team and has been a pretty consistent performer as a small forward. We are happy with his development.

Thanks, ruckman Wayde Skipper

..Hawthorn rookie Luke Breust justified his selection in the VFL state squad with five goals. Breust had 13 possessions and kicked consecutive goals in the first and third quarters to ignite the Hawks.

Re: 47. Luke Breust (Rookie)

In the mix: round 10

HAWTHORN
Luke Breust was one of the best players for Box Hill before last week’s break and would still be on the borderline of selection.

Re: 47. Luke Breust (Rookie)

I just wanted to get the take from you guys that see VFL games each week as to why Luke didn't get promoted to the main list?

I read with interest all year the B.H. reports and he seemed to get glowing reports.
With Hooper and Peterson gone and a less than usual output from Ossie last season, I thought Luke would be promoted to fill that spot.
With Cyril tipped for more time in the centre, who do you think we leaving the small forward role to this year?

Re: 47. Luke Breust (Rookie)

Not sure the new rule change will help guys like him.

At the moment he seems to me to be a pure small forward in the Phil Matera/Stephen Milne role, without yet having the fitness to move into the midfield, certainly at AFL level.

You therefore have to be super-good as a small forward if this is the case, as clubs will prefer guys like Rioli and Didak there, who can have spells on the ball as well.

It's a big year for Breust this year.

Re: 47. Luke Breust (Rookie)

Almost certainly an issue of fitness. Luke missed part of the back end of the pre-season through injury. I'd expect him back in the 1's next weekend and pushing for senior selection soon thereafter
