Nick Blakey
Nick Blakey is a prodigious talent with a laser-sharp left boot, an outstanding overhead ability and searing pace. The QBE Sydney Swans Academy product booted 21 goals in 19 games in a brilliant debut season en route to winning the club’s 2019 Rising Star award, and while he added a lively element to the forward line last year, he’s likely to play on a wing or in the midfield in 2020. Nick is the son of former Fitzroy and North Melbourne champion John Blakey, who’s had a variety of roles on the Swans’ coaching panel since 2006.

Nick Blakey
DOB: 27 February 2000
DEBUT: 2019
DRAFT: #10, 2018 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: University Of NSW-Eastern Suburbs (NSW)

This is absolutely fantastic news for Nick. There has been an increased focus on the mental health of players recently, and it certainly helps their wellbeing when they have the choice of playing for anyone other than norf. It is a shame that selfish norf posters want to force a young man to play for their club against his will, just to try and give themselves a bit of a boost

Geez don't use up all your material before your Round 17 preview!

Just took a gander at the norf board. My God, must've wondered into the Salt Flats.

They have gone the full Mormon over there. The Club is to be renamed Salt Lake City. GAJ is so impressed he now wants to be a big name recruit there to run the prayer circles.

Was pretty confident with Blakey nominating us. Had some inside info as my nephew is good friends with him through school but you never know. Great news. A top bloke by all accounts.

Had a squiz at the North board and it is far from a meltdown
There is some disappointment and anger but overall they have been quite reasonable and sound with their analysis, understanding Blakey's position and asking more about the reasons why players aren't choosing North as a favoured destination

Academy has been more than kind to us
Heeney, Mills and Now Blakey
More than kind? What is there, 600 kids per year? Granted they’re coming to the one club but the school system in Vic is producing far more talent annually on top of TAC Cup teams. And Collingwood alone has probably drafted more through F/S system.

Extremely favourable then?
Without the Academy we wouldn't have got any of the 3 players... all Top 3 draft picks in reality
It isn't about total numbers to our club...it is the quality of the academy player that is coming and 3 top 3 draft picks is exceptional

I find it hilarious how Melbourne folk depict all Sydney siders as Chardonnay swilling snobs heading off to the opera. Apparently all of us have rich relatives with SCG memberships we can borrow and watch the game from the ladies and members stands. Little brother complex rife on the norf board, hilarious.

Am I the only one who think it’s more fair that a club whose invested time and efforts into developing a kid gets him, rather than a club who get him purely because one of their players from decades ago happened to shag his wife and produce a son?

That single brain cell they share down south seems to be getting passed around a lot on the main board.

Easy. Some Bloods folk live in the joint.

Wouldn’t we? The scholarship program was in place before then and guess what...every team had scholarship players! So in reality, I believe we’ve gotten only what we’ve invested in and don’t forget, we’ve had to use a pick to get them.

What makes me laugh is the whole North wetting themselves over th F/S thing.
The romantic notion of playing for the same club your old man did , hanging around the change rooms. Being influenced by your family being attached to the former club.
Nick was 2 when his dad retired.
He was 6 when his dad started at the swans.
So which club again has influenced his life the most??

We didn't have pick 2 or 3 for Heeney or mills
We were able to leapfrog a bunch of other clubs picks to draft these guys due to various concessions given for academy selections and points

I'm not disagreeing we invested in these players through the academy but the point stands that the academy system is kind to our club

Because he has grown up in Sydney. Gone to school in Sydney. Has lived in Sydney for most of his life (in particular the memorable bit).

By all accounts barracks for Sydney.

Probably has minimal memories of North or living in Melbourne given his old man started at Sydney when he was still young.

All his friends are here.

He literally has zero reason to pick North over Sydney apart from the fact his old man played for them. It makes no sense apart from the traditionalist romaticism of playing for your old mans club.

Completely agree, I much prefer a merlot!

A bit like Dunkley and his connection to Sydney

Hmmmn ... seems I have been given a holiday from the #lolNorf Board. I cannot imagine why. I stuck to the facts, beyond a tiny bit of speculation on whether Nick consulted with Heeney on the reasons why he opted to not take up a lucrative offer from the Aardvarks.
