22 point domination...

This is partially true. However you can't deny Geelong was experimenting last night. We only played about half our deck.

I'm very confident should we meet in the finals you will see the Geelong team line up and play like the one that thrashed you in last year's prelim.

Whatever what were they experimenting with?

This is just a response to decredit our win

Rest on your laurels of games in the past at your own peril

If they were it was only experimenting because plan A saw them getting smashed in every statistical category that coaches deem important.

How far off full strength was they Geelong team that lined up last night? What positional changes could you have made that would have changed last nights result?

Are you suggesting Mark Thompson was more interested in experimenting (as you put it) than actually winning the game?

Thompson would have been gutted at the loss, like all the players.
However the lesson we leaned from 08 was not to show all your cards early. It's a pretty basic premise and it won us a flag last year.

You are kidding right? Geelong have won 8 of their past 9 finals including 2 flags.
That is the definition of finals dominance.

You got that bit right.

Good win last night, but spare us the historical revisionism.

No, if Geelong had won 3 flags, it would have been dominance. You won two. I think Geelong 07-10 are a better side than the Brisbane Lions of 01-04, but the Lions won 3 flags. Yes, you definitely can still win three flags, and a part of me hopes you do because I sincerely love the way your football team plays. But the simple facts are people just remember wins and losses. You should be thinking about how your team actually played, who they played against and did they maximize their potential?

But for a few bad breaks, Geelong might have one flag in three dominant seasons. Now I agree that they probably deserve the 09 one because the 08 GF was a wasted opportunity, but seriously, dude, I mean come on, How good is your team? They have been awesome. In 07 nobody was anywhere near them. That GF should of been a soda, and a young Collingwood team that went 13-9 (compared with Geelong's 18-4 and 17 out of 18 or something like that) pushed you to 5 points.

08, ummm....two teams in it for a long way, only one side could of beaten you in September and they did.

09, two sides in it again. Clearly Geelong and St.Kilda were the most dominant sides and yes you won the premiership, but I would of expected the almighty Geelong to win more impressively, but on balance of play, Saints were the better side.

Perhaps this year will be the year when the Cats really hit top gear for the finals, but as far as I'm concerned, the Cats have beaten who they were supposed to, and lost one game against a team they should of beaten.

8-1 might sound good to you, but its really 2-1. You are a great team, you SHOULD win grand finals.

Should have been a 60 point smashing but we will have to wait until finals..

Losing Reid cost us 4-5 goals as the Chop would have carved the J=Pod like a ball of soft butter all night, he is by far out deadliest rebounding defender because he gains 50+ meters on a turnover... So we missed him all night and had to play 21 v 22.

We can improve on that performance by a good 8 goals easy, the goal kicking was a disgrace and a few of our boys need to wake up and stop letting these sides get a look in..

The cats kicked half their score from kick ins after a point, so if we can just get a 25% increase in accuracy the cats would have been blown away by half time...

Finally Wellingham is back to his early season form and Beams just kicks a lazy 3 :p..

Selwood is a disgrace, stop playing for free kicks you *******

Geelong are still No 1 team in the comp. Agood month from Collingwood cant change that. Until we perform in a fimnals series we haven't yet moved forward.

Dont think the results of last month elevate us above Cats or Saints. We are third in line but have a bit of a chance of going all the way. Still think Cats will make it 3 out of 4 and if they do history beckons

ill cop the loss on the chin but the pies wanted it more, Ive never seen a flag won in august, the pies dominated and won by 22 points. The hunger will be there when it matters and it will be so much sweeter to see pies supporters squirm when Cloke, Macaffer and Dawes are in front of the big sticks when the game is on the line. If the cats get rolling we wont be stopped. Gametime into Tomahawk and Ottens will help to.

2007 Collingwood smash geelong in season, geelong win final
2008 Geelong beat Hawthorn in season, Hawthorn win grand final
2009 St Kilda beat Geelong in season, Geelong win grand final

I'm not saying Geelong will necessarily win a final against the pies but this shows that winning during the season just isn't the same as in the finals and Geelong have a lot of experience.

Also can Collingwood keep up this form? They're playing unbelievably at the moment but there's still a lot of weeks left.

I love the simple assumption that Geelong will flick a switch in September and it will be game over.

With last nights loss you have now lost a game to every other team occupying the top 6, with the exception of the Bulldogs who you are yet to play.

I'm not writing off Geelong by any means but there are a number of teams who have closed the gap on them considerably and hiding behind the whole "we'll beat them when it matters" is a bit of a cop out.

didak04 its true, they will switch on in finals, and they will win the grand final, its no BS at all. its just that you can't handle the truth.

So winning a game in the 4th last round before the finals is considered peaking to early these days...WTF!!!
Didn't it used to be called "Carrying good form into the finals"?

I guess Geelong supporters in particular can relate to their teams form in '08/'09 leading into and during finals. Geelong spanked everyone in '08(lost to Collingwood funnily enough) and only lost one other game for the year, the Grand Final. Geelong's home and away form in '08 was possibly the best ever seen, their finals series was terrible. Hawthorn took advantage.

In '09, Geelong struggled and lost a couple at this stage of the season and 'cruised' through the season, then hit the mark at finals time. StKilda were flying all of '09(superior H&A side), then struggled to even make the Grand Final before losing it.

Geelong learnt a lesson in '08 and rested players / prepared for finals much better in '09. Top form is required to win finals series, it is also hard to maintain over 5-7 weeks.

Bottom line... form will change, injuries will occur before / during finals(inevitable). StKilda have the hunger of a GF loss to be redeemed, Collingwood have nerves in getting past a Preliminary Final, Geelong is going to be tough to beat either way, but winning the last 2 of 3 is surely not going to see them as hungry. Like I said earlier, it's now Collingwood's to lose, or at least that's how the media will stuff it down your throats. While I don't think they will win it, the Pies fans will fall very hard now if not... as the Saints fans did last year. The double edged sword of being favorite.

Fair call, but I just recon it's going to be the year of the Pie (love em or hate em they're traveling nicely at the mo), similar to what the Hawks did a few yrs back.

No problem with that... my point being though, late H&A form isn't a good indication of form in finals. Geelong were travelling better than the Hawks at this stage in '08. Saints were much better than Geelong at this stage last year... form wise.

The fact is Scarlett, Ling, Milburn and a host of others are getting old and slow..

We beat you with 21 players all night, kicking 23 points, hitting the post 6 times, we played bad, minus 1 player and still won..

We are a young side on the up, Geelong is an old side on the down... You might snatch another 1 this year if we let you, but you wont even get near it next year :D
