Re: Goldstein?

There was an article about him in the H/S this week.

Played BBall his whole life and would have played NBL then did a last minute switch to footy. MAde a big impact in half a season with Oakleigh.

I remember thinking he sounds pretty exciting because he is VERY athletic.
Could round out an impressive ruck division.

Re: Goldstein?

you can't say we are fine for rucks, no more. Natural attrition and unforeseen circumstances could leave us with gaps, our existing guys keep getting older. We also want youer guys keeping the pressure on. Plus - an unpopular view - there's a slim chance that Moran may not turn his two good games into a 200-game ruck career at North. If this kid is good enough, glad to have him join us.

Re: Goldstein?

Yep. Our six or seven rucks are gonna kick ar_se. Just kick it high.

Meh. As long as Laidley and the other coaching staff know WTF they are doing, I don't care.

I love drafting guys who are guns at two sports.

If he is anywhere near as athletic as Moran - these are not your stereotypical bigmen.

At the very least, we could have some pretty massive trade value in a couple of years to add another piece to a challenging team.

Re: Goldstein?

Look at how we've built our ruck division (very clever by the club):

Hale - The All-Rounder

Hamish - Forward Orientated

Moran - Athletic Ruckman

Goldstein - Tap ruckman

Dean said during the week that most clubs have 4 ruckmen on their list and we have 3 and we would be drafting a ruckman late in the draft. So why are you surprised? Or is this just another bash North anytime you can post?

Re: Goldstein?

33 - HAWTHORN - TODD GOLDSTEIN
Oakleigh Chargers, 1 July 1988, 201.0cm, 106.2kg

A member of the '300 club' (200cm/100kg), Goldstein is a young man-mountain that could fit in a variety of scenarios in this draft. He is a genuine chance to figure early in the draft, due to his physical attributes - and the lack of ruckmen in this meeting - while he also looms as a second or third rounder. Hawthorn, Collingwood, Kangaroos, Essendon, Sydney and Melbourne have all expressed interest, with the Hawks a genuine prospect for him at No.33 and particularly since Everitt has moved to Sydney. The Hawks may also look at midfielders O'Keefe, Connors and Houli.

Highlights/achievements: Ruckman with an elite basketball background. Began with Oakleigh Chargers program late in season 2006. Ruckwork rated highly and possesses good skills for a tall. Has proven that he can go forward and kick goals.

I do have to wonder why another big man was needed. Let's hope we've pulled the right rein.

Laidley said on the radio that we were likely to pick up a fourth ruckman with a later pick, not sure why this is a huge surprise.

Picking him up means Petrie will never again go into the ruck and that alone is a huge positive as far as I am concerned. ;)

Nah. Not bashing. See my post in draft thread.

Also if we are looking to move Hale to a key forward position you don't want to have to end up moving him back into the ruck because of a lack of numbers in the position.

He will need to focus his footy now on playing the forward role, that being said if the team is getting rolled in the ruck then he should be moved into the ruck, players need to be versatile.

Too true. The other possibility is that Goldstein might not end up playing in the ruck. Form memory (probably totally wrong) Hale was initially thought to be a key forward, but then came through the ranks in the ruck. Drew was intially thought to be a ruckman, but it has (thankfully) not turned out that way. If Golstein is a big powerful unit, it's not beyond the realms that he might develop into a key forward down the track.

Both Hale and McIntosh played their junior footy as forwards, they pretty much learnt the basics of ruckwork at the club so are not natural ruckmen.

Goldstein has a basketball background and they tend to be very good natural tap ruckmen. He also has played a bit as a forward. He has no real pressure on him as McIntosh and Moran will be doing the bulk of the ruck work but if one of those two needs to be rested or get injured then he can come up and get some exposure as a secondary ruck.
