Geelong offered the All-Australian ruckman a lucrative four-year deal to move down the highway, while St Kilda and a few other clubs also tried to lure him away from the Kangaroos.

Three-time Syd Barker medallist Brady Rawlings joined the club as head of football midway through last year, but couldn’t start in the role until after the National Draft. North didn’t have a list manager until just before the draft when they promoted Glenn Luff. And Rhyce Shaw had only just secured the role on a full-time basis when Goldstein put pen to paper.
“I was close (to leaving), but it was also complicated. Brady was on gardening leave. We had got rid of our list manager. It was hard for my manager to get too much traction at times with North,” Goldstein told foxsports.com.au.

“I think once we were able to get some place we were able to move forward quickly. There was that unknown and at the end of the year there is always going to be other clubs calling, but it was reasonably close. My preference was always to stay at North if I could.

“The big thing for me was I was really happy where I was. I wasn’t looking to leave because I was unhappy or anything like that. For me it was about trying to get that job security.
“With some long-term deals on the table it was hard to say no to them, so I did need North to come with me to a point. But I felt like I had enough runs on the board and I’d been fairly healthy that I could play out those three years.”

“North has a good history of keeping players. Not too many players leave for the sake of leaving. I genuinely love this footy club and would love to be a 300-game player.”

Plenty can change in a year – let alone three years – when you’re the wrong side of 30, but Goldstein is optimistic he can earn another deal beyond the one he signed in September.

Interesting that he wants to play on after the current deal as well. That would make him 35. I guess he feels he can still contribute at a high level ala Sandilands well into his late 30's. If it was any other position other than Ruckman, I'd be more dubious. But who knows? Go get em Todd.

However, Irks me reading these articles, when he says roughly along the lines of "North had to come to the party" given for half of his last deal (the largest in the clubs history since Wayne Carey) he produced pretty garbage years for at least half of it.

His AA jersey was 5 years ago now...

Not denying he didn't perform last year, but we didn't exactly get value for money for his last contract...

The bit that actually does irk me about the article is that it makes us sound as rudderless as we were depicted to be in the media at the time.

If that's true there was no reason to be in that situation. All the staffing decisions were made deliberately so we should've had the foresight to even pay specialised consultants (eg Gubby Allen types) to hold the fort until the cavalry arrived.

The mental demons part is still a bit grey for mine. I was one of the first on here circa 2017/8 to raise genuine concern for his mental state from general observation. However, you are culpable for your actions and there seems a social norm creeping in to claim immunity after doing something inconsiderate or hurtful to those around you.

I think thats a bit unfair on Goldy - he is a club man and absolutely worth what he signed for when he did. He had a rough patch and we should be empathetic of that. He wanted to secure a future for his family and didn't want to leave North. He ultimately turned down longer offers to stay with us. His journey hasn't been perfect but I'm proud to have him be a shinboner for his whole playing career.

He's tarnished by the North Melbourne factor with regards to his reputation.

He's been a top 3 league ruckman for the better part of 10 years. If he'd played for a high profile club his perceived worth would be a given.

The best players get 15 years to make a living out of football. Clubs don't show excess loyalty to players. They all have managers in their ears. Is it any surprise that he spoke to other clubs to at least bring a little competitive pressure to his new contract.
