If they were picking only a forward for last position, surely Lewis Taylor warrants a selection over Rioli?

That was probably my gripe along with Wright as the ruck. Taylor had an excellent year

Was Zac Williams even an option to get picked in that side? He's ranked as the number 1 player in his position in the entire afl!!!!!!!!

How stupid are those responsible in listing Petracca as a midfielder instead of a forward when he played forward for majority of the year? He misses out on selection as a direct result. You really have to wonder.

How Daniel Rioil can get picked in that side while Petracca misses out would be disgraceful if it wasn't such a meaningless award.

But.....but...........he's a Rioli!!! It means the commentators' voices automatically rise several decibels whenever he goes near the ball, and any time he does anything (like, say, doing up his bootlaces) - 'Only a Rioli can do that!'.

I agree - he's been a handy half-forward, nothing more. At the start of the year he played quite well, but since then, he's actually gone backwards a bit. Been protected by Richmond's overall good form, and the fact that he is EXACTLY the type of player who fits the gameplan. In an average side, he would have had a spell in the 2s somewhere along the way.

I don't wanna use it as an attack on Rioli he's a good young player playing a role in a side that's flying. But Petracca was playing Dustin Martin like quarters all be it very inconsistently but he had to be in there. He's a much better player than Papley as an example.

Overall it was a pretty useful team selected. Agree CP was stiff to miss and so was Freo's Darcy. The Bont is also a worthy capitano.

It was interesting to see the final distribution between clubs. This is a bit of a guide to the future.

Essendon and the Bloods both had 3 reps (and the Hayburner's first season at the latter also saw him finish top 5 in the vote for 1st season players).

The Dees and Hawks seem well placed for the future.

It was also great to see the Lions have the two bookends.

At the other end of the scale, Clubs without players in the team included the Pies, North, Cats and Freo (the latter were stiff). The Pies, Cats and North have poor recent records in developing their talent - and have concentrated on acquiring players developed by other clubs. These clubs are likely to continue to throw the cheque book around, but Cats aside, are unlikely to be successful.

3 players in the team including the Vice Captain.

Does Essendon have the best youth in the league?

Not sure. Maybe. Certainly have some star talent with the 3 that were named.

There's a lot of teams with a few gun players under 22. Sydney, the team that defeated Essendon by 11 goals last week, also had 3 named to this side.

He is ineligible, too old

Swans were on track to win by 20 goals but a sore Buddy had them switch to cruise mode.

I don't think it's really that simple. A couple of guns that are young helps but in a 22-man-a-side sport, a few good players only goes so far. You'd rather have these guys on your list than not, but I would assume it'd be a pretty poor guide for future performance.

I said it was a 'bit of a guide'. Of course every team needs a mix of young, medium age and vets.

WC not one inclusion. The future is bright. Thought Barass was in with a sniff.

Didn't realize Martin had been playing well. Has he?
Barrass was in the squad, but probably fair enough. He was a bit up and down this year but for a key back he's done very well. Andrews and Lever have been better, albeit in differing circumstances.

Martin had a good year, actually. 24 goals this year rotating through HF/HB and averaging 18.6 touches a game. His best year by fair.

Gifted because your last place finished was due to your teams own actions. Ah well. Ancient history. We are all over this tale.

And every team in the league were 'gifted' the chance to play a massively under-strength Essendon! Games that the club had to play and the supporters had to sit through. Swings and roundabouts.

Anyway, at least we made the most of the situation, McGrath looks excellent so far.
