Delisted 23. Aaron Black (2017 - 2018)

I understand what you're saying, but I'm not sure a player's role is entirely dependent on his height. For example Pavlich is listed at 192cm, Roughead 193 and Nick Reiwoldt also 193. But they play tall. They're key forwards. From what North fans have said, Black is not a key forward, but I don't think that's due to him being a few centimetres too short, but rather a reflection of his game style not being that of a key forward.
At NM he had to contend with taller KF's in Petrie, Hansen, Waite, Brown, all who played as true KF's. When Black started, he was lean, mobile, and very talented.
Then injuries set in.
Then lack of opportunities with the others favoured.
Like SK, not a genuine KF.

Is this serious?

I can't tell anymore o_O

He seems to be the best bet to fill the other KPF spot on this list at the moment.

They let him go for pick 92.
Pretty much says it all...

Not sure its as simple as that. Was he contracted at North..did we take over his contract? The over valuing of fresh meat compared to in system players that are just off the pace is incredible. Im not saying he will be a great add to Geelong but I bet if he played in the u18's last year he would have done pretty well V those u18 defenders , playing in a comp with rules that prevent defensive measures.

Waite is nearly done, and injury prone. Petrie is gone. They still kissed this guy goodbye. They are as likely to need ready made back ups as us...
I hope he can turn into something, but you must admit the odds seem against it.
Happy to be proven wrong.;)

Black wanted to leave, I think at North he would have been equivalent to Vardy.

Some talent, few injuries, not getting in best 22. Needed to go for fresh opportunities.

I don't think the draft pick necessarily perfectly reflects the value that they placed on him, just as pick 72 for Vardy doesn't mean he can't play.

Black has shown he can play at the highest level, whether he will do that at Geelong, who knows, but he has some ability.

I think thats a different point. letting him go at 92 and not being a replacement for Pietre and Waite.. I expect there is an element of contract and element of them resetting. I doubt they see him as a player to build their forwardline around... and they need to get games into younger types.
He is a guy who has show he can do stuff at afl level.. perhaps he can do that for us , and at 92 its only cap and list spot risk.

We got rid of TV to assist with SC, same with Caddy.

North moved Black to save 1/2 his SC.

It happens. And with the player movement increasing the way it is, I daresay that it will happen more and more.

Id like to know how much money is getting paid by clubs to their non players... It seems almost a legit rort. You could make a case that any player not getting paid what he is really worth is a dilution of the caps purpose but to have other clubs pay for a clubs players...where does it stop and how much is allowable and where does it stop. Imagine Deludio , Johnson , Shaw , Griffin , Mumford all from other clubs ... if they we all on other clubs SC.. makes a mess of the ideal.

In the NFL, which granted is a way off the AFL - the "dead cap money" can reach crippling levels. Eg - the Oakland Raiders carried some 50 million in dead cap space (47m out of 127m) I think it was due to paying out back ended and dead contracts to players either off their list on partials to players on other people lists.

That was just horrible manangment. However, there are also times where it pays off to carry forward dead cap space.
In 98, the Denver Broncos were close to another championship. They topped up some vet players, backed ended their deals and they retired after winning. The Broncos went b2b Super Bowl champs and fell off the cliff after it as they carried and paid out those deals.

It's to the point now where each club must have master cap and contract specialists that purely facilitate that role. It's essential.

Teams have realised that the peak and trough is too much so the peak and level off is better - and the SC Management is paramount to that

Always interesting reading when you relate stuff from over there Daz. Thanks.

I tend to think it has relevance as its where we are heading - albeit 20 years or so away..

And of course the scale's are different. But the big picture stories are the same.

That's where, although its a bitter pill, the Caddy cap space is its own interesting - and potentially prudent event. Same with the way they brought Black in. Getting him pick was was cheap but IMO they saw that as secondary to the wage carried by NM. Even if they get a few games from him, that 50% off discount is huge.

Regarding the SC - flexibility is key and the management of those cap numbers - where to use them, dump them, carry them and accept them, is almost as important and the players themselves these days.

And the fact that, albeit clearing a best 22 player, we have opened up space in the fluid player movement environs we find ourselves now, will be invaluable later on.

Looking the Pies for example clearing Cloke was massive, but they they loaded up big again on the back of it. Not sure of their ability to take on more if it presents itself.

And with that, the romance of footy dies a little more. Vet players near the end of deals can see themselves suggested as done by clubs looking to get the same level of output from a cheaper source. All because of the bottom line. And footy aint a business? Not likely.

The minds like Cook and the $$ people like Costa will only become more and more valuable.

North Melbourne must love dealing with Geelong :$ . . . from McIntosh to Delaney and now yet another bloke whose proven he's simply not upto it. Does have lot of Brent Grgic feel about it though. Grgic did manage to play a few games at least so maybe there's hope for Blacky boy yet.

Cam Mooney turned out alright didnt he?
Let Black play a few games before you let your negativity infest the boards ....
