Lance Franklin
Lance Franklin is a giant of the game. The star Sydney Swans forward has played 300 AFL games, won two premierships with Hawthorn, is the seventh-greatest goal-kicker in VFL/AFL history, is one of just five men with eight All Australian blazers and is the most recent player to have kicked 100 goals in a season. The Western Australian is also one of just two players in the game’s history, along with former Swan and Saint Tony Lockett, to have booted 300 goals for two clubs. Franklin was added to a leadership group for the first time in his career ahead of season 2020, joining co-captains Josh Kennedy, Luke Parker and Dane Rampe, as well as Callum Mills. But the 33-year-old, who was named captain of the 2018 All Australian team, has long been considered an exceptional unofficial leader, so great is his impact on Will Hayward, Nick Blakey, Ben Ronke and the rest of Sydney’s young forwards.

Lance Franklin
DOB: 30 January 1987
DEBUT: 2005

I can just imagine if we lose, the media slant will be Buddy's re-signing was a distraction.
Whereas before it would have been Buddy not re-signing would have been a distraction.

If we win, then.........crickets.
I just laugh at those poo hooing his re-signing. get a life. You know who you are. Get on board or get lost.

That would be pretty selfish, 300k committed we can't use on someone else. Hes playing on.
If he retired before next year $ would be freed, there would be no limits on his contract that exist in this one.

Thought any contracted player that retired had their salary counted?

I think the rules around this are a bit of a grey area. I think it depends on the players contact but often I hear they negotiate a payout. I thought basically they pay the player less in real dollars but the full amount is still counted in the cap regardless. Idk, could just be talking out of my arse right now too.

I remember Fosdike for example waiting to retire until the following season so that the salary didn't put us over, but maybe the rules have changed since those days.

I don’t think it would be counted unless retiring during that actual season. Could be wrong though.

Yeah that's what I mean though, wouldn't it count in our 2022 cap which could * us? I think if he's signed a deal, he's playing on regardless of Saturday.

I suspect he will be managed heavily and should we be pushing finals again will be played in critical games.

Based on? Has he had any injury troubles this year?

I would have been happy with whatever decision he made but this is still so huge! To think when we first brought him to Sydney, we thought we would get maybe 6-7 good seasons. Now he’s extending that contract and is leading our goal scoring. Incredible.

Yeah at the very least he's sticking it up all the bigfooty posters who were hoping he'd get injured and we'd have to retire early and we'd need to keep paying him. Mainly hawks supporters. I have a long memory and those guys can go * themselves.

Another year for Franklin is okay in my book
He is our leading goal scorer and Logan/Amartey/Mclean are not ready to fill that space yet.
He takes a key defender and that takes a little pressure off a young developing forward such as Logan Mcdonald
Amartey and McLean are both contracted to the end of 2023 and I hope we keep them both.
Buddy wont play a full season, he will be part managed and Reid and/or Logan will likely have form or injury issues.
Both Mclean and Amartey have made constant improvement this year, in marking, accuracy and defensive pressure. Amartey especially in defensive pressure up forward , and he has bulked up nicely.
They are both 197cm/100kg forwards who can Mark, kick goals ruck and who could also play defence, which is exactly what Reid does for us.
It's the ongoing improvement in both of them that gives me confidence they have a future with us past 2023

Because I'm a dork with this sort of stuff, a few milestones now in his sights:

468 goals at the Swans (1 to go) - to pass Hall to be third most goals by a Sydney Swan
500 goals at the Swans (33 to go) - would be first player ever to kick 500+ at two V/AFL clubs

522 goals at the Swans (55 to go) - would pass O'Loughlin to be second most goals by a Sydney Swan
350 games total (10 to go)
183 games for the Swans (25 to go, so this one most unlikely) significance being this would take him past games played for the Hawks
1058 goals (11 to go) - to pass Doug Wade into 4th all time
1100 goals (53 to go)
79 Finals goals (5 to go) - to go second all time for goals in Finals

The ones in bold most achievable IMO but all not out of the question.
