Lance Franklin
Lance Franklin is a giant of the game. The star Sydney Swans forward has played 300 AFL games, won two premierships with Hawthorn, is the seventh-greatest goal-kicker in VFL/AFL history, is one of just five men with eight All Australian blazers and is the most recent player to have kicked 100 goals in a season. The Western Australian is also one of just two players in the game’s history, along with former Swan and Saint Tony Lockett, to have booted 300 goals for two clubs. Franklin was added to a leadership group for the first time in his career ahead of season 2020, joining co-captains Josh Kennedy, Luke Parker and Dane Rampe, as well as Callum Mills. But the 33-year-old, who was named captain of the 2018 All Australian team, has long been considered an exceptional unofficial leader, so great is his impact on Will Hayward, Nick Blakey, Ben Ronke and the rest of Sydney’s young forwards.

Kane Cornes finished his AFL Career To Become A Fireman. Failed the ****ing Exam. So gets on radio and makes outlandish comments about possibly a top 10 AFL Player if not Top 5 of all time. Just like his Father likes the sound of his own voice and isn't taken to seriously. See him when I am out running around the Albert Park Lake quite often so I will make sure I say Hello next time I see him and tell him he will be more embarrassed by that comment than the dicky compression socks he gets around in.

Surely no-one takes that idiot seriously?
 
Found this article from way back in 2013 when Buddy was still a Hawk.

What makes it interesting is that Matthews mentions that the $12M includes marketing money thrown in.
So one can fairly assume that his contract with us of $10M over 9 years would have marketing money thrown in.
Perhaps our cap won't have the full amount applied to it as much of it could be marketing dollars.

Buddy talks up Harbour City

"Franklin said he felt the Hawks were pressuring him to sign a deal, with his $12 million decision just weeks away."
"But privately the Hawks are worried, aware Greater Western Sydney is extremely confident about its position and knowing their best deal is more than $6 million less than the expected Giants offer."

Hawthorn eight-time best and fairest Leigh Mathews last night indicated he thought Franklin would move.
"The longer the year goes on, the more you think he's going,'' he told 3AW.
Hawthorn's final offer has been improved to five years at around $5.5 million, while Sydney could offer $12 million over six years with AFL marketing money thrown in.
"There has been a little bit of pressure and expectation from the football club in terms of a signing,'' Franklin said.
"But for me I've always had that mindset I want to do it at the end of the season.
"I like Sydney. I obviously like Sydney a lot, but I enjoy myself in Melbourne and obviously love Hawthorn Football Club.
"As I've said from the start of the season I'll leave that for the end of the season and from there make my mind up on what I'm going to do. But at this stage it's Hawthorn where I want to be at.''
 
Here's another one that may shed some light on why the AFL were angered by us & why they went over the contract with a fine tooth comb.
I honestly believe that our salary cap is not as hamstrung as first thought should Buddy retire early as ambassador dollars promoting the game in NSW should he move from Hawks to GWS would also apply when he came to the Swans instead. Last time I looked, we were in NSW when he came & still are & he has put AFL on the map since coming to us, with memberships for Swans, deep in NRL territory, now boasting 60K. Worth every cent of those ambassadorial payments from the AFL. ;)

However, AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou has repeatedly said any additional money for an ambassadorial role could not be guaranteed until after a player of Franklin's marketability reached an agreement to relocate."

So we stretched it out over 9 years meaning 9 years of ambassador payments too.
The delay of approval by the AFL could well have been because we held these ambassador payments over their heads & they weren't happy but could retract any of these offers to make such payments after he committed to moved to NSW.


We've had to listen to Hawk supporters telling us that they were close with their offer.
No wonder he left after having this initial offer put in front of him.

Not at all. There was always talk that GWS would approach the AFL to top up Buddy's contract with AFL marketing money that would sit outside the cap completely last done when we lured Plugger to Sydney at the end of 94, but their "cap" offer would still be enough to blow the Hawks out of the water. The belief was that the Giants had the unofficial approval of the AFL that they would receive the marketing money if they asked for it once Buddy signed. Hence their anger with us.

With our offer we never approached the AFL before Buddy signed so there was no AFL marketing money on offer and they would never approve it based on the contract terms. In any case it was likely the Giants push to get Buddy marketing money from the AFL (which would then mean he would be relied on by AFL for promotional work whenever they required) meant he never seriously considered GWS as he wanted privacy and firmly pushed him to us.

Any marketing money we pay Buddy is under the terms of the ASA cap and that would've been where the AFL investigated us in terms of what we offered him (most likely image rights for promotional use) and how much we then paid him for that. I doubt he is taking up much of our ASA cap.
 
Very secretive stuff indeed.
In other words, there are NO real facts, just assumptions like the one I made from those particular articles, on how much he is really on or how much of it is in the cap & for all anyone knows, other than the club, Buddy's management & the AFL, we may have even made adjustments to the contract for these last few years, where we have brought forward extra dollars in seasons 2018 & 2019 & 2020, in order not to have such a burden in the last two years. That is one legitimate way to decrease the amounts in the cap for seasons 2021 & 2022.

It's all assumptions.

1. The goal against Port in 14
2. The running goal against the Crows at Adelaide oval
3. Goal after siren against the Eagles this year.
 
- The 80 meter goal against the Hawks from the edge of wing side of the center square at the MCG
- His 10th against Carlton at the SCG in 2017
- His repeat of the "Hooker' goal at the Adelaide Oval

I also highly rate his goal against Collingwood when he was still a Hawk when he received the ball in the middle of the MCG, hurdled a pack and sent in home from 80 meters in the wet.

So many more as well that defy the game
 
One that seems to have been forgotten a little is the goal that put Hawthorn ahead in the 2011 PF when he met the ball storming out of FF, tapped it to the boundary, beat Tarrant to it and kicked a dribbling banana from deep in the right pocket. It was outrageous at the best of times, let alone in time-on in a PF coming down to the death.

EDIT: at 4:10. I will never tire of watching it. Dennis Cometti at his best. And Hawthorn lost. Best of all worlds.

 
2012 round 22 or whatever and like round 9 2011 felt like he could beat us on his own

so much better with him on our side, won a few off his own boot

2016 his round 1 game v the pies was almost most enjoyable because he was back

When he's fit, he's still one of the best handful of players in the comp.

The challenge is ensuring we keep him fit. Not a good sign that he's picking up more soft tissue injuries but if we can get a pre-season into him and have him at full fitness for round 1, we're gonna be a dangerous team next year.

Agree, I think the real reason was to get his 300th at home and the crowd that it brings with it, purely and simply. Don't know why they couldn't just come out and say it.
