Past #23: Geordie Payne - Will not be extended 2026 - 3 NM games/3 NM goals - Thanks Geordie

Sellars got less of a chance. Similar story...ripping it up in VFL only to have one game or so and gone

tbh I think both would be hard done by, so not making the point Payne should be written off...just to be clear
Payne kicked three goals in his first two AFL games and even on the weekend managed to influence a contest to the point he turned it our way and we scored a goal. Sellers never managed anything like that.

He's been fairly ordinary tbh. But I wouldn't expect much more...so I am not knocking him as it takes time to get up to AFL speed

My point is more on Sellars which I thought was a little harsh, at the time. I believe when he played was Geelong in Geelong which isn't an easy game. We just give a guy one game at perhaps one of the most difficult games to play in and throw him in the bin....its kind of pointless not to be given 2-3 at least.

And yet we have 7 or 8 in the seniors who stink it up all year and still get a game

Anyone who is aggressive / combative needs to get extra points. Payne gets extra points which get him over the line for a new contract. Would love to see what he can do with extra strength and endurance next year.

Retain on the basis he visually appears to enjoy playing for North about as much as we have enjoyed watching North for the past 6 years

Does NMFC have a clue what a small forward looks like? I honestly don't think we do.

Charlie Cameron, Jeff Farmer, Brett Allison, Ezard, W Abraham, Kosi Pickett, Betts, Ballantyne, Bobby Hill.......

A quality small forward has serious PACE - First and foremost. Without that, forget about it. Pace allows the small forward to chase & tackle. It allows them to create space. It allows them to get out the back. It allows them to get on a lead.....It's the fundamental number 1 attribute of a small forward.

Secondly - CLASS - This allows the small forward to hit the scoreboard. He may only get 10 touches a game, but a couple of goals a game hurts the opposition.

Thirdly - a decent LEAP - It allows the small forward to compete overhead. Not only does the leap allow the small forward to bring the ball to ground if required, it allows them to be an actual aerial threat. Look at the above small forwards - almost all have taken mark of the year candidates.

Now, we have drafted Payne, Mahony, Hrovat, Drury, Konstanty, Turner, P Spicer, Banch, Hansen Jr.........All total busts as a genuine small forward. They are actually bizarro small forwards.

It's not rocket science FFS. Rawlings & co. need to learn WTF a small forward actually is!!!!! It makes me sick.

Reckon the first two are mandatory. I'd add anticipation as part of class.

It's a fair point. We haven't done a good job of finding an elite one, but it's hard those attributes in the one player.
A recent draftee with those tools is Watson. Kako looks quick, but not elite speed (* NGA anyway).
Jack Higgins doesn't have elite speed (3.10s 20m), but kicks classy goals and pressures as well as he can.
Darcy Jones has elite speed and class, but can't say I've seen take a decent leap.
Closest this year would be Dovaston or Latrell Pickett as a mature age recruit.

Already delisted Ford so that points to taking a small FWD in this year's draft. We will do well to draft Dovaston, meets the profile that DF has elaborately pointed out. If Payne goes out, who is likely IN for this OUT. If the opinion is Payne OUT, then does Cooper Harvey have a case to answer as well? It's a line ball call between the two. Or is it both Payne and Harvey OUT? If so, that makes it 6 de-listings for 2025. Also worth noting that Payne was a MSD 2024 selection. De-listing Payne after a year when he has shown decent VFL form this season could be viewed as a little harsh. Suspect he will get a another year but if struggles to get AFL games, then he's gone at 2026 end.

Cameron, Pickett, Hill and Wizard Watto are the only current small forwards who would meet all 3 criteria. Genuinely elite small forwards are pretty rare and why I was keen on the Wizard in the 23 draft.

We have a potential 40-50 goal a year small forward in PC, just need a couple of pacy types who can pressure and crumb alongside him. Don't need them to be elite, just play a role.

I don’t class him as a classic small forward.

Without diving in to it I feel like most of his scores come from marks.
He has two goty contenders from insanely good crumbing goals in his short career.
