It's not just about game time and hours.

It's about making an 18 yo responsible for our backline in a side that gets flogged every week.

cant put him under that pressure indefinitely.

He's the sort of player that will thrive on the challenge of deep end learning though. Just needs a freshener week here and there.

Don't burn him out Bolts.

Rest him soon.
Totally agree, one week too early better than one week late but maybe one more then give him Rnd 5 the interstate game off. Tricky after that as we have the Bye in rnd 13 and all our games in Melbourne so I would leave it to him to fess up if he has any soreness at all in that period.

If he needs a rest, give him one. Don't assume he needs a break from the big time and play him in the twos though. I'll let Bolts and Weiters decide that though. What do we know?

Buddy Franklin played 20 games in his first season including the first 14, then a 2 game break (don't know if he had a niggle or not), then finished the season off.

Buddy has a big tank so fitness wise could play a lot of game time. I haven't seen Weiters look spent yet. Time will tell.

from memory his (Weiters) beep test at the combine was elite for a "big"

5th overall at 15.1 in 2015, the best of the big men.

In previous years, in 2007 Joel Smouha at 196cm recorded the same time.

So Weitering holds the equal best beep test result for a tall in the history of the draft.

Incidentally Matthew Kreuzer was 10th in his year with a 14.2 which was considered outstanding for a big man at the time.

Parish or Oliver will probably get the rising star this year cause playing KPD is easier than midfield... or something of the sought.

Because Weitering gets to see a lot of ball in defence because of how shit we are.

Last key defender I recall being that composed was Bruce Doull and that includes SOS who was brilliant in other ways.
I see a lot of similarities with Doull. He knows when to mark the ball, when to spoil & where to direct the spoils. He also provides similar run from defence to what Doull did at his peak. It is a massive compliment to give to a 3 gamer, but you can already see that he is going to be one of the greats of the game.

Cautious agreeablenessment........

was talking to old digger at local game today , and he say to me that Weitering reminds him of young Bruce Doull...after a few jokes about the different hairstyles he tells me how smooth a mover bruce was , how calm he was ,how he was a great decision maker... i only remember Doull play near end of his career, and he still played like he could go around another year then...for me , weitering only need to do half as much as Doull and i'll be happy ...

We are very lucky to have a player of Jacob's calibre at the club.

Hard to believe that Jacob will play this season out as an 18 year old. You could be forgiven for thinking he is a 10 year veteran given the maturity he displays both on and off the field.

He may have played just three senior games but already you can see his game ticks every box. Reads the play well. Makes the right decisions. Uses the ball well. Barely loses a one on one contest. Ticks everywhere.

So much hype surrounded Jacob over the last year or so but I am always cautious to place lofty expectations on a first year player, in particular a key position player. There is a long way to go yet, but you can just about throw that caution out the window...this guy is phenomenal and has a huge role to play in the re-birth of the Carlton Football Club.

We are down in the dumps now and may be for a few more years, but rest assured that in Cripps and Weitering we have two of the very brightest young talents in the game. Both are pleasures to watch & are genuine pieces around which to build our next 'premiership team'.

And now Sicily deserves this week's nomination because a bloke who can show up for 15 minutes in the last quarter and get on the end of a few deliveries from an A+ triple premiership midfield in a team with the systems and talent to always be close enough to win the game will always be better than Weitering's four quarter influence in a losing side.

****ing shits me.

Would we be able to get a highlights package of Weitering's illustrious 3 game career?

Just look over the Carlton highlights from our first three matches, and then ignore

Walker's one-handed mark
Daisy outmarking Buddy
C Curnow's one-handed mark

and voila!

One thing that amazes me (on top of marking, positioning and decision making etc) is his kicking skills.

Have seen him deliver brilliantly weighted kicks, sharp short kicks, precise kicks and kicks to advantage. One of my faves was a 20-25m bullet pass around a GC forward (1st qtr?).

Was a thing of beauty and something few midfielders would have pulled off. Not just the kick itself, but the ability to process that as an option, the chutzpah to try it out and the skills to execute it to perfection.
