Ben Stratton's Rising Star odds indefensible
Mark Stevens From: Herald Sun July 14, 2010 12:00AM

ONLY once this year has Ben Stratton
managed to make a splash...

"Ben has been adaptable enough to play on both small and tall players," Hawthorn football manager Mark Evans said.

"I remember talking to Gary Buckenara and Chris Pelchen (recruiters) and them saying he could play some games this year and cope with the level," Evans said.

"He's good in the air, he reads the game well and he kicks it well," Evans said.

Hawks had lost belief
Sam Edmund From: Herald Sun August 16, 2010 12:00AM

"It was definitely tough over the last couple of weeks travelling over to Sydney and Adelaide and we just lost a bit of that belief," Stratton said.

"But all the boys look like they've got that back now and all the senior players have risen, so it's good."

"It would have been tough to make the finals if we'd dropped this," he said.

"We just really needed to lift and get that intent back and play the way Hawthorn play."

"Absolutely, the rain started coming down and the ball was heavy and it was just a slog, so we just said, 'Get it forward any way you can'," Stratton said.

"It's pretty rewarding, especially being a wet day and we'd come into it under the pump. It's nice and a relief, no doubt."

Bulldogs recruiting coup gives Hallmighty result
Matthew Lloyd, August 1, 2010
http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/afl...p-gives-hallmighty-result-20100731-110mx.html

When you think of Hawthorn recruits, automatically most will think of Shaun Burgoyne. While he has been exceptional and is getting better by the week, Ben Stratton has had an enormous impact on Hawthorn's greatest deficiency, the back line. Taken at pick 46 in last year's draft, the 21-year-old has rarely lowered his colours and looks so assured.

He reads the play well and has a great pair of hands. Burgoyne and Stratton make the Hawks such a stronger team and add to the depth that was missing earlier in the season. Burgoyne has added so much class and flexibility to the midfield, it has released Jordan Lewis to a forward role and allowed Alastair Clarkson to use Chance Bateman in a variety of defensive roles.

HAWTHORN’S latest star, 21-year-old Ben Stratton, is delighted to have been nominated for the NAB AFL Rising Star Award, but is even more excited about his AFL future...

“It was good to get a nomination for the Bulldogs game, but is was even better that we won – it was an important game for us (Hawthorn),” he said.

“I matched up on Mitch Hahn for most of the game, but also had short spells on (Shaun) Higgins and (Brad) Johnson. I thought I played some good footy.”

“Having played them before was a bonus, because I knew more about how they moved the ball.”

“It’s good to have cemented my spot in the team and to be playing some consistent football. I know my team-mates a lot better and I am improving each week.

“The coach (Alistair Clarkson) told me to back myself, which i have been doing and it’s showing in my football.”

"I was a big surfer growing up. I used to go before and after school with
my mates, so I definitely miss the surf a bit," Stratton said.

I went once in pre-season with Brent Renouf. He took me down to Phillip Island
and it was freezing and there weren't that many waves, so I didn't go back."

Apart from not being near the surf, probably the difference from WAFL level
was the pace of the game and a lot more pressure to perform."

I arrived here and the next week I was off to Kokoda. It was a good way to
bond with the boys and see a different side of them," Stratton said.

A decision on possible knee surgery for injured Hawthorn AFL defender Ben

"They (PCL injuries) are anywhere between four and 12 weeks I think, so
hopefully he recovers quickly," Hale said.

"I think he was seeing a surgeon later this week and they'd decide from
there. PCLs - some of them you can operate but some just take time to heal."

Stratton back for Hawks
Brent Diamond, the age.

HAWTHORN will rush young defender Ben Stratton back into the VFL today for the Box Hill Hawks as reinforcement for its defence come finals...

''He's a pretty fit sort of a kid, so we won't be taking him off at half-time or anything like that.'' Carroll said.

''I think it's a step forward in his rehab from injury … we think he can come in and play well and comfortably play at the level. He's obviously a good young player.''

Stratton's impressive return
Brent Diamond, The Age

HAWTHORN defender Ben Stratton made a successful return from a knee injury for the Box Hill Hawks in the VFL yesterday and could be earmarked for a swift return in time for a qualifying final against Geelong...

"I thought he was good," Carroll said. "I thought he was pretty consistent [and] his ability to spoil opposition players was really important.

"He certainly played with intensity and played on talls and shorts. He got a bit more game time than we really wanted due to our lack of bench rotations with three pretty severe injuries."

Courtney Walsh, The Australian.

Hawthorn football manager Mark Evans said last night that key defender Ben
Stratton, whose season looked finished when he underwent a knee
reconstruction in April, had recovered well from his first match at VFL level
with Box Hill...

"I think we just need to monitor him but he pulled up well. It is just about
increased game time for him," Evans said.

"He has been as diligent as anyone I have ever seen with his rehabilitation.
Everything needed to go right to get to this stage but everything has gone
right."

Round 24 2011 Season

Ben Stratton makes a return to the senior team for the final game of the Home and Away season against the Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium, Gold Coast, Queensland on Saturday 3 September 2011.

Stratton is one of 8 changes the Hawks make before the Qualifying Final against Geelong on Friday night 9 September 2011.

With just 6 day break and flying to Queensland the Hawks made numerous changes including bringing our centre half back for his first game since doing a pcl in round 3 against Richmond at the M.C.G on Saturday 9 April.

Stats for Stratts on his return and 25th senior AFL game

7 kicks, 5 marks, 6 handballs, 6 tackles and 1 free against.

A modest return in a winning team.

The key question is whether Stratton will keep his position for the finals? It has to be said it is unlikely.

DT: 240 (Avg 60) $234,400 (-$6,700)

Drafted at pick 46 in 2009, Stratton had great debut season in 2010. Slotting into Hawthorn's back line, he played a role each week, and even managed to nab himself a rising star nomination.

2011 came around and Stratton started off strongly, with two solid games against Adelaide and Melbourne. In the third game of the season, in slippery conditions against Richmond, Stratton was again playing a good game, when injury struck. Attempting to soccer a ball off the ground, a Richmond player fell across his leg. Stratton had to be stretchered off, and scans later revealed he had ruptured his PCL quite badly, as well as a nasty dislocation of the knee. This was seemingly going to be the end of his season.

As the season progressed, Stratton worked tirelessly at his rehab. It was a race against the clock. Managing a couple of half games at Box Hill saw Stratton miraculously selected for Hawthorn's round 24 match against Gold Coast. He was dropped for Hawthorn's first final against Geelong, but played in the rest of Hawthorn's finals series.

With another full preseason, Stratton should find full fitness, and build upon his 2010 and 2011 season's, which have been impressive, when he has played.

Lets start 2012 with a few quotes from Ben himself...

February 17, 2012
Stratton rested and ready

Two of Ben Stratton's first three games back from a serious knee injury last
year were finals, and the 22-year-old admits it placed enormous stress on
the posterior cruciate ligament in his right leg...

“My knee was under a fair bit of stress and I needed to give it a good rest
over the off-season to get it right for this season,” Stratton said.

“So I was able to approach this pre-season pretty much like any other. I'm
still doing my rehab exercises and monitoring it a bit with the swelling.”

“But I've been able to get through most of the preseason pretty unscathed.

“I don't think I came back too soon. Obviously it was good to get that finals
experience in those last two games, and I'm just looking forward to this
season and hopefully playing a full year.”
