Instead you give Higgins 1.6 mil over 4 years?
Sounds hypercritical but you always have to pay overs to get players to the club. Levi and the Pies are the perfect example of this. It's the way it works. Our initial offer at years end should have been better but you have to draw a line somewhere. Big $ from the Pies though. Just no September action.

Dude, with restricted FA you gotta pay to get your man. We go with $300K for Higgins and Dogs do the same, then he stays.

But that's beside the point. We have the cap space to match the Pies offer. But we don't value Greenwood to that amount and for that length. We start being held to ransom by players now then we can kiss goodbye to a strategy of keeping a core together at a reasonable cost, ala Geelong.

Seriously though sad to see him go, but really happy with the clubs strong stance here, assuming we get a good deal. I'm hoping they can work it into a three way with Brisbane. Picks 25 and 28 (whatever it works out to be) or 25 and Merrett would be great for us.

Interesting this...I think this is right ...not 100%
Players who are not in the top 25 per cent of salaries at their club are eligible for unrestricted free agency if they have served at least eight years with the club.
Greenwood wouldnt be in top 25% (Or would he?)
And he debuted in 2008 so its his 7th year.
I stand to be corrected
so is Greenwood a FA in 4 years?

It's pretty clear what has happened here.. Levi hates brad scott for not playing him all these years and has now got his revenge on brad by walking out for an extra 50k. So be it, i think it could work out for us anyway.

Looking at the pies list there's not too much that suits us in terms of a player trade. Obviously we'd trade for Elliot or Keeffe but i doubt they would. Josh Thomas and a pick exchange could work but if collingwood can offer us a pick around early 20's we should take it and head to the draft and hope Nakia slides to our first available pick and select him with the early 20's pick as backup to fill our specific needs.

Liam Pickering just said on SEN that Levi also felt that if North had a full strength midfield available that his position would be in jeopardy. North had offered 3 years
Only if his form slipped, but you can understand he may worry if he can maintain this years form.

If North get fairly compensated its probably a good move. While we wont cover him directly its about the midfield combination being better, this allows to tweak it a bit. Swallow should be back to 100% next year, a fit Wells, with improvement from Cunners, JZ, Basti ect. With a fair trade hopefully we can get a little more flare, outside run and polish into that mix.

Meanwhile for Greenwood, we were a bit heavy on inside mids, he'll have less competition for his spot and makes a bucket load. Again, we get something fair back this should be win/ win/ win.

C'mon how many of us would stay in a job on s shorter term contract for less money?

80% of us judging by the posts KV

People need to realise the only stability you have is that contract. You are 1 injury in the wrong year from being surplus to needs.
I don't begrudge any player from looking after themselves at contract time.

Judging by some responses today this place will turn to shite when our 4-5-6 year players become 8 year players.

Yep spot on, we needed to get more polish, finishing skills - Higgins was deemed the best available you pay a bit overs for that.

Collingwood in dire need of an insider mid which we have ample of. They paid a premium to get the sort of player the desperately need, which we wouldve been silly to match.

Yep. He can take the longer contract and the cash if he wants, and we are within our rights to refuse if we don't value him that highly.

And down the track there is no reason for either party to get all catty about it. He is entitled to do what he thinks is best for himself in what is a very fickle industry with a very sudden use by date.

Definitely agree with the Merret trade. We were definitely monstered by the big boys this year and desperately need our own gorilla.

I recall the following "monstering the little guy" events this year:

Buddy / Tippet / Goodes in Pre-lim
Tom Hawkins (as usual) in the semi final
Skinny Daniher vs Firrito in the Elim final (give me a break!)

Cloke (another "as usual") in Round 5
Waite/ Henderson / Casbolt in the Carlton game
Gold Coast game (Lynch and mates)

We are simply too short and puney in the backline. I'm predicting Tarrant at full back or CHB in 2015.

I think Sauce Merret is a no brainer.

I think the thing for us is we have been fortunate until now to not have been impacted in this modern era & some are venting on Levi (that's ok). We could very well have been in the wrong stage of development at the wrong time with not enough stability & we would have lost players like the Bulldogs over the last few years. Not bagging the Doggies just where they found themselves.

Interestingly for all those people that bag him l would imagine that Brad would have been a big part of the decisions players made to stay.

Yeah their list is looking a bit shit at the moment. Less premiums than ever, a smattering of potential and a fair share of hacks. Sidebottom would be ideal but that's not happening, Seedsman maybe? Kennedy could be alright. I don't know. I reckon it'll either be second rounder or Walsh makes him march into the PSD.

Interesting , same dilemma we faced with white, peaked in his 8th year with us , no way known were we prepared to offer 1m over 3 years. I suspect your people viewed this case the same way, 74 games in 7 years not generally grounds to go offering a 4 yr term, glad we didn't do it. Good luck
