With the arrival of Newman & the return of Doc & Willo, we should not see Thomas, Lamb, Murphy, JSOS etc in defence in 2019.

Kudos to SOS for bringing McGovern, Setterfield, Fasolo & Newman to the club while holding onto this & next year's 1st round draft picks, unlike a number of clubs who are sans' this year &/or next year's 1st round draft pick.

This is a welcome thread so Nic I’m looking forward to see you play for the Blues. My assessment of your games with the Swans is a hard nut with wonky looking kicking. I’m ok with that. Plenty of room for those types of players in the game.

Welcome to Carlton :thumbsu:

Like this trade a lot, we've given up next to nothing for a player in the ideal age demographic who has shown himself to be very capable at AFL level.

There is plenty to like about Nic's game - beautiful long kick, reads the play well, has some flexibility and is a very strong tackler.

Think we'll see him plenty at senior level next year but will be a valuable addition at either level.

I hope he succeeds for you guys. I also believe he was very unfairly maligned by a lot of Swans fans. In truth though he was one of the best kicks in the Swans team and in 2017 showed a tonne of promise, cementing himself in the best 22 that year.
what were they bagging him for?

Seems like Aaron Mullet all over again. But this time we paid more.

Nope, not even close.

Not the upside of Byrne, but certainly an upgrade on Mullett, Shaw and O'Shea. Fills an area of need for a cheap price, welcome.

Think back to "bad Doc" a couple of years back. Weapon by foot, then prone to a (or series) of clangers.
Newman may be a decent piece, and heaven knows we are suddenly short of HBFs, but without improvement
is no gun/messiah. I am reserving judgement to see how he fits in.

Look 2 weeks ago i would of agreed. Since then his mentalty wasnt in it. And he has broke his ankle or something preety bad in a gaelic footy match in ireland. Bryne while had major upside was made of glass. Huge respect for him but he stuffed up. Newman alot more durable with great skill aswell. And has finals experience. Hes a carlton player now so i will give him the respect he deserves.... to my knowlage byrne is not a carlton player anymore so good luck to him with his life and i hope he enjoys it back home. One last point... oshea shaw and mullet were all drafted or picked up as dfa. Meaning their worth was squat to begin with.. swans had a one year deal for newman ready to go. I feel newman will be better for us more than byrne the same as i feel fasolo will be better for us more than wright.

I had him in my SuperCoach team in 2017 when he first started getting a game so kinda followed him a bit early on.

Had a few big efforts, 2017 round 8 against norph probably being his best outing:

35 disp
82% eff
19 kicks
11 marks
4 tackles
460m
13 CP
151 SC

Upgrade on Byrne. Can be a ball magnet with excellent foot skills. Not overly quick, but a tough old fashioned footballer.
Wouldnt say upgrade. Byrne when healthy was a jet.

Newman's hands aren't as clean and not many have Byrne's agility through traffic.

BUT potentially a good compliment to Docherty and a long term replacement for Simmo, who can now rotate more as an outside mid.

Backline looks very solid now:

FB: Plowman Weitering Simpson
HB: Docherty Marchbank Newman/Williamson

Allows us to scrap Daisy from there too, where I felt his lack of defense screwed us.

Byrne played 3 AFL quality games in five years. The love he got on this board was embarrassing. Nice fella by all accounts but 22 games in 5 years and always injured.

Newman a much better performer in a much stronger team. Definite upgrade..
